Phil Greene

Very strange if he does indeed decide to transfer. Question, would he be eligible to play right away at another school since he's a senior? Or is that only for 5th year seniors who had graduated already? A little unclear on the rule.

Without a hardship, he would need to have graduated.

Just to recap...
we lost a kid to the NBA draft and his best friend then asked for a release. Jordan said he'd be back, Harrison will be back, and it was tweeted that CO will be back. We return our three best players and our entire back court. A couple of guys are disappointed...as they should. Let's reel it in, guys.

Marillac, does the lack of improvement of our players from one year to the next under Lavin bother you?

What gets me most upset about Lavin is how soft his divas play the game. He doesn't stress tough basketball and that makes me sick. That's the one thing I can say about Norm over Lavin besides maybe inbounds plays. His guys played tough and they crashed the glass and got dirty.
Dom Pointer is beyond help, and Wooden himself couldn't fix that kid skill-wise. Sampson is not too different, but both of those kids should have been forced to play to their strengths and avoid their weaknesses, and Lavin gives his guys way too much leniency IMO. How many top 75 raw kids does JB strike out on...a ton.

I think both Greene and Branch can be good reserve guards, but their defense makes me want to throw up. They need to go back to the drawing board and get those kids to buy in.

I did see big improvements from CO during the winning stretch, but he was terrible in very limited minutes the last two games.

Look at a picture of the 10-11 team leaving the court and then look at his past season....these guys are WEAK. The strength coaches need to be taken to task for a complete failure to get these kids physically prepared to succeed. It's embarrassing.

I'd hire Phil Missere as an assistant coach and let him beat the crap out of our guys in practice. There is a guy who walked on, busted his butt, and made himself into a legitimate Big East player when the Big East was the best conference in America. I can't recall an SJU player doing more with less, and giving it all every single second he was on the court. He also knew that playing for SJU was a privilege and given the chance didn't squander it. Our players could learn a lot from this guy.

+1 on Masiello...he messed up, got embarrassed, but don't throw his skill set under the bus. He's a NY guy, I'll bet he wants to stay local, and we could use someone to kick some ass and get what's left of our roster motivated. Hell let's find Matt Brust too and get this team in the weight room. Unmotivated, soft play comes from a soft coach.

He has to have graduated on get a hardship waiver to be able to play immediately.

We're now blaming the strength coaches?
You blame someone in every single post, but Marillac casts one stone and you throw yourself in front of the strength coaches. Wow.

Yes. I consistently hold one person accountable. The head coach. We are clearly polar opposites, as you place almost no blame on Lavin. Actually, I get the feeling you think the program is alive and well. That's fine with me.

Well, I guess I don't deal in absolutes as much as you, Sith Lord. I am not a happy St. John's fan, and I do take Lavin to task on certain issues, however I realize how tough of a job this has become. I have not forgotten having to get excited over guys like Larry Wright and Tomas Jasawhatever. I also can't destroy a guy who scouted the 2011 class for just a few months for taking risks on very raw but talented players. I recognize how tough losing Moe at that juncture was--note, I will not give him a pass on Sampson as the team should be ready to handle an defection by this point.

He recruits at a high level. The year is not over, and I really think--if this board can find some sense and not let every opposing coach and recruit know we are in a complete meltdown--that Lavin can deliver some top talent yet again.

Wow - so this message board is at the root of the recruiting problem?? Who knew!!

Where did I say that? .

would suck to see another player transfer. Always thought greene got a bad rep on this site. He's a useful player, and one of the only guys who can consistently hit threes when put in the right position. It's not his fault Lavin plays him at the point...

I said this on an earlier thread a few weeks ago. I feel that when Lavin came here he went out and recruited the highest rated players that he could. He did this without much though as to how these players and their games would mesh or compliment each other on the court. The players that he got were ranked high but they were not at that level where they were complete players. He was able to recruit guys at that next level lower who while ranked somewhat high each had some major deficiencies in their games. I think that Lavin just wanted to up the talent level as much as he could and then he would figure the rest out later. What you have is bunch of players who were rated high coming out of high School but their skill sets just do not compliment each other at all. In my opinion, at this point, I don't care who leaves. Blow the whole damn thing up and start over. Get players in here who's games compliment each other and will mesh on the court. I think Lavin realizes this and that's why he's talking about 2015 and 2016 recruiting. He's blowing this whole thing up. He knows he approached this all wrong. Just my opinion.

Where did his wifie transfer to?

James Madison, she is from the same town as me and is good friends with my sister. If Phil goes anywhere it would be a Chicago area school, highly doubt he leaves though.

Criticizing the 2011 class is complete BS. I think what he wanted was to be able to field a team of 5 and have a couple folks to come in and give them some rest. Was it the ideal recruiting strategy? No but given that he was on the job less than 7 months before the early signing period he did what he had to do. He signed 9 guys to that class with less than a year of being back in college basketball. He took chances because he had to and you're right, they didn't pay off, both with Amir, Jakarr and Norvel not qualifying and with issues of Nuri. Thrown in Polee's transfer, Stith's quitting and Lavin's cancer and the best laid plans, well you know the rest. I mean anyone who was around at that time was shocked he was able to accomplish what he did. That's the furthest from his missteps. You blow the who thing up now and you will get the exact same thing. He needs to mitigate the issues and have some sense of continuity going into next year.Still allows for a large class and new approach the following year. If he needs more than 4 available rides per year in the next two classes to reach his goals, well I don't even want to imagine that could be the case.

On a side note your avys are always awesome lol

Wifie is hood vernacular for his main girlfriend, as opposed to his side piece. You don't really have to put a ring on it for her to achieve wifie status.

we lost a kid to the NBA draft and his best friend then asked for a release. Jordan said he'd be back, Harrison will be back, and it was tweeted that CO will be back. We return our three best players and our entire back court. A couple of guys are disappointed...as they should. Let's reel it in, guys.

Respectfully, we are NOT returning our 3 best players. Jakarr was one of our 3 best players.

So Harrison and Jordan are not returning?

To clarify I think he meant to imply STJ is returning its two best players, not its 3 best players.

Respect your opinion and disagree, particularly that "he knows he approached this all wrong". I am not in the fire Lavin school but watching his teams going back to UCLA, there has always seemed to be a lack of complementarity between his players (team is less than the sum of its parts), particularly in half-court offense. This year we have also witnessed a consistent breakdown in team defense; i.e. cutters in to the lane or ball reversal have opened the baseline corners for any competent three point shooter from any opponent all year long. Rysheed at his best helped a lot with the team defense but we had too much athleticism and size to stay so bad for so long. I think you may be right in that he is going towards a more traditional structure of key star players and matching role players (Keady influence?) but I have never seen any evidence that he can coach this approach.

Fwiw

@JayOn_1: Everybody close to Phil Green thinks he's still leaving, I think he'll come to his senses and end up staying #sjubb

Agree with first part of your post. Early on he went out and got best available(per rankings) players in a hurry. He did so under adverse circumstances and did a great job IMO, although I thought he should have held on to Ron Roberts. However every successful coach knows that good complimentary players and continuity are always integral parts of a successful team and program. The fact that Lavin is just figuring that after being a coach for 10 years is mind boggling.
