Phil Greene

Just to recap...
we lost a kid to the NBA draft and his best friend then asked for a release. Jordan said he'd be back, Harrison will be back, and it was tweeted that CO will be back. We return our three best players and our entire back court. A couple of guys are disappointed...as they should. Let's reel it in, guys.

Marillac, does the lack of improvement of our players from one year to the next under Lavin bother you?

I have no idea if Phil is transferring. However, I do know he is home in Chicago and not currently on campus.

DLo is not on campus either, must be transferring too

I saw DLo in Taffner today, there is enough going on without posting something that is definitely not true. I have no idea what is on his mind or what he is thinking but he was in Taffner around 2pm today !!!!

Then he got back last night or today, he was getting tatted in Houston yesterday

Marillac, the sky may not be falling. That's true. And maybe some of us are overreacting, that's possible.
But you are turning a blind eye to this. We just got blown out by Robert Morris after failing to show up for our Big East Tournament game against Providence. We have no recruits for next season and it's April. Two players have left this week, and two more are rumored to be thinking about it.
These are not good signs. Individually each of them has a plausible alternative the program can turn to; obviously JUCO recruits and transfers can be acquired, there is some depth on the bench in Jones and Felix. But taken as a whole they are not the signs of a healthy program.
For example, We CAN get a transfer or two, but why do we have to? Every other program has signed their recruits for next season. We knew we had 3 players graduating.

Dont let the door hit you on the way out, Phil.

Absolutely nerve-racking everytime he has the ball in his hands which is not good for a guard.

HTGS in the house!

Four words I thought I would never utter with regards to Marillac: The Voice of Reason...

Apparently our guys don't believe in teamwork enough to go to the AD to get the coach fired like UNC did with Crazy Matt.

What gets me most upset about Lavin is how soft his divas play the game. He doesn't stress tough basketball and that makes me sick. That's the one thing I can say about Norm over Lavin besides maybe inbounds plays. His guys played tough and they crashed the glass and got dirty.
Dom Pointer is beyond help, and Wooden himself couldn't fix that kid skill-wise. Sampson is not too different, but both of those kids should have been forced to play to their strengths and avoid their weaknesses, and Lavin gives his guys way too much leniency IMO. How many top 75 raw kids does JB strike out on...a ton.

I think both Greene and Branch can be good reserve guards, but their defense makes me want to throw up. They need to go back to the drawing board and get those kids to buy in.

I did see big improvements from CO during the winning stretch, but he was terrible in very limited minutes the last two games.

Look at a picture of the 10-11 team leaving the court and then look at his past season....these guys are WEAK. The strength coaches need to be taken to task for a complete failure to get these kids physically prepared to succeed. It's embarrassing.

You blame someone in every single post, but Marillac casts one stone and you throw yourself in front of the strength coaches. Wow.

I'd hire Phil Missere as an assistant coach and let him beat the crap out of our guys in practice. There is a guy who walked on, busted his butt, and made himself into a legitimate Big East player when the Big East was the best conference in America. I can't recall an SJU player doing more with less, and giving it all every single second he was on the court. He also knew that playing for SJU was a privilege and given the chance didn't squander it. Our players could learn a lot from this guy.

Yes. I consistently hold one person accountable. The head coach. We are clearly polar opposites, as you place almost no blame on Lavin. Actually, I get the feeling you think the program is alive and well. That's fine with me.

Well, I guess I don't deal in absolutes as much as you, Sith Lord. I am not a happy St. John's fan, and I do take Lavin to task on certain issues, however I realize how tough of a job this has become. I have not forgotten having to get excited over guys like Larry Wright and Tomas Jasawhatever. I also can't destroy a guy who scouted the 2011 class for just a few months for taking risks on very raw but talented players. I recognize how tough losing Moe at that juncture was--note, I will not give him a pass on Sampson as the team should be ready to handle an defection by this point.

He recruits at a high level. The year is not over, and I really think--if this board can find some sense and not let every opposing coach and recruit know we are in a complete meltdown--that Lavin can deliver some top talent yet again.

I wouldn't worry to much about opposing coaches. They've already got plenty of ammo if they're looking to dissuade a kid from coming here. As for Lavin delivering some top talent, he may well do that. Time will tell. But he has yet to prove that he can do anything more than that. He can't blend or harness talent, he can't recruit a balanced roster, he can't get his kids to play hard or together. I could go on and on and on.....

I dont know I think the fact that Phil Missere was a legitimate part of our team is kind of part of the problem at St Johns in terms of talent. I dont want stories about a goofy walk on that worked hard and busted his butt. I want stories about losing 3 former high school All Americans to the NBA because they were so successful at St Johns that they are all going to be drafted in the NBA.

Wow - so this message board is at the root of the recruiting problem?? Who knew!!

Phil Greene voluntarily transferring because he's frustrated would make about as much sense as Barack Obama voluntarily resigning because he doesn't think he has enough authority. Nobody on this team has gotten more preferential treatment from the coaching staff than he has.

And for that reason I fully expect that he will be back for his senior season. Hopefully, for his sake and the team's, the coaching staff will properly utilize him. Scoring spark off the bench. All the minutes available when he's making shots. Glued to the bench when he's not.

Well put!

Very strange if he does indeed decide to transfer. Question, would he be eligible to play right away at another school since he's a senior? Or is that only for 5th year seniors who had graduated already? A little unclear on the rule.
