Paultzman's Avatar

1st of all I have a love/hate relationship with Paultz's avi's for obvious reasons. 2nd it's very apparent that timing was horrible with us and Slice. He would've been perfect to come on board before Year 3 of this project. Not at its inception.

2.how is our recruiting prowess sans Slice? I mean it seems w/Chris, Matt, Mitch and a Slice replacement = not "chopped liver" (e.g. We should still get our share of nice recruits?)

All the best

If Mitch replaces Slice, our assistants are Matt Slice and Greg St. Jean. It would be a Mitch replacement rather than a Slice replacement and wouldnt have much effect on recruiting (at least actively)...

if it happens Matic gets the call.

Agree, but let's hope it doesn't happen. Love Slice and he was born to make a positive impression on NYC's team.

Interesting story Francessa told a few weeks ago. Said that some years ago, before Mike's "falling out" with SJU and when he was far more connected to college hoops, he and Rick Majerus spoke at length about Majerus coming on board to coach the Johnnies (I forget what period), with Slice coming along as his lead recruiter. Mike and Slice have been friends for years.

We're a better program faster if Slice stays, so I hope it happens. He's a NY guy who belongs at SJU.

But if, for whatever reason, he moves on, no choice but to accept and move on as well.

FWIW...Majerus mentioned

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
COLLEGE BASKETBALL; St. John's Nears Deal With Jarvis
By STEVE POPPER / New York Times

Published: June 9, 1998

After more than four weeks of searching for a new head basketball coach, St. John's appears to be closing in on a deal with Mike Jarvis of George Washington University.

Although representatives for St. John's and Jarvis refused to comment, an official from another school confirmed that St. John's officials met with Jarvis's lawyer, Robert Ades, yesterday in New York to try to iron out a contract believed to be in the range of $800,000 a year for seven years.

Ades did not return calls last night and Jarvis, reached in his office in Washington, would not comment. A St. John's spokesman also refused to comment.

St. John's first got in touch with Jarvis after interviewing three other coaches: Siena's Paul Hewitt, Davidson's Bob McKillop and St. Bonaventure's Jim Baron.

The negotiations came a week after Jarvis met with three St. John's officials: Ed Manetta, the athletic director; Robert Crimmins, the executive vice president, and the Rev. Donald Harrington, the president. Since then, Jarvis and Ades waited for a St. John's offer. Last weekend, according to the official from another school, St. John's finally got in touch with Ades. Ades, who said last week that he would return to New York only if an appropriate offer were made, came back on Sunday to try to reach an agreement. Jarvis earned $600,000 last year at George Washington and spurned Boston College's $900,000 offer.

While St. John's has tried to assemble a package to entice Jarvis, there have been suggestions that university officials are fearful that he will turn them down because two coaches have been dismissed in the last three years. Fran Fraschilla, who was shed last month, was not the first choice to replace Brian Mahoney two years ago, when St. John's could not attract heralded coaches like Rick Majerus and John Calipari.

Jarvis's lawyer presented a proposal last week with 24 areas, ranging from salary to a dental plan, and asked St. John's officials to fill in the blanks.

The blank that was hardest to fill was the salary slot, said an associate of Jarvis's. Still paying off settlements to Fraschilla and Mahoney, St. John's was hesitant to commit such a large salary to Jarvis. Part of the cost will be defrayed by Nike, which got in touch with St. John's, according to the coach's associate. Jarvis is under contract to Nike, the associate said, earning $125,000 a year. St. John's now receives more than $300,000 a year from Nike for wearing its Brand Jordan line of uniforms and sneakers, and Nike would kick in about $100,000 more if Jarvis were named coach.

St. John's is an attractive job for Jarvis, who has been working in the shadows of Georgetown and the University of Maryland. Jarvis has compiled a 253-141 record in 13 seasons as a Division I head coach.

Spot on Moose, Mensa members trying to interpret Paultsman's avatar is ridiculous. I'm wondering who is in on this joke

It would be better to title the thread "Avatar Watch" and simply log the name of the avatar you see. Then we can keep track of all the changes and skip the bipolar nature of the thread.

I like it

For Paultzman's latest avatar (I assume it is Justin Simmon - Arizona Transfer),

Do we think we are legitimately going after another guard (with Simmons), or is Paultzman just having a little fun with us?

Just sense we could get a Simon visit. We'll see.

FWIW, found this article saying Pitt may be courting him.

http://www.cardiachill.com/2016/3/2...-pitt-basketball-pittsburgh-panthers-2016-acc

"With his recruiting success, some may bring up Barry "Slice" Rohrssen. He was a vital piece in his two stints with the Panthers and was probably the best recruiter that Pitt has ever seen. Currently, he is an associate head coach at St. John's. A program that is on the wrong end of the seesaw, I cannot imagine it being difficult to convince him to jump ship. His issue, of course, is the failed stint at Manhattan. Rohrssen may never be a D-I head coach again, let alone here at Pitt."

This was from a week ago and in regard to hiring Slice as head coach. Pitt already brought in Stallings, and not sure Slice takes a probably pay cut to go back to Pitt a third time under a coach he has no relationship with, assuming Stallings even calls him.

I was just throwing it out there as a possible reason for the speculation and rumblings. I'm still trying to find reasons why he'd consider leaving. As for the article and him going to Pitt, in addition to your points, there's no doubt Slice knew exactly what "end of the "seesaw" he'd be climbing on at the start of this rebuild. I don't think a year-one losing record would be much of a factor.

I read LJSA's (Yakwe) avatar as Paultzman. For a panicked minute, I just about cried...
