Open Practice this Sunday oct 1

I think you're overlooking someone....

I wasn't. Berry played no defense. Johnson was that good and could score, rebound and defend. We almost took down undefeated indiana (perfect season) led by johnson. Berry was almost a hybrid forward, johnson a true 4

A little off topic but not really. The current lowest price on Seatgeek for the Michigan/St. John’s (Nov 13game) is $222 per ticket. Don’t know if that’s just based on current limited availability or what but that’s crazy.

Point is this has to mean something about the interest. Much bigger than an open practice on a football Sunday.
I would say the current limited availability, plus elevated interest has the prices where they are. They will come down when additional tickets are made available.

The larger point is, anyone planning on attending multiple games, should consider buying one of the packages they are offering. The MSG plan can get you a decent seat for roughly $80 per game. Let's pack the house!

I would be all over the MSG package if I still lived in the area. Before I left ('97) I had both the MSG St Johns (section 209) and the MSG CBB (Box 59) season tix packages for more than 10 years. I think that would represent the front and back of section 116 left today. Those were the days. They wuz cheap, not that $640 is a bad deal.

To be honest while I have no

My screen name is because of The Truth.

If Walter played no defense like you said Syracuse would have won the 86 BET Tournament Championship on a layup from the Pearl.

No defense? The guy average 11 rebounds and 2 blocks a game in 1986 while averaging 23 points a game.

No disrespect to George Johnson (another SJU great) but give me The Truth.

Best back to basket game of any Johnny over past 50+ years.

He ate up Kent Benson (Undefeated Indiana team) in sold out MSG. Ultimately roomed, with Benson, while with Pacers. Benson told him that he was afraid of him when they played in MSG.

Blocked shots and rebounds are not the same as playing straight up man defense. In fact sometimes blocks happen when a player is not guarding his man and instead is wandering. The no defense assessment came from.none other than Red Auerbach, when asked on TV if the Celts would be interested in drafting Berry, who was named the Wooden Award player of the year. Berry slipped all the way to 14th or 15th in the first round.

I don't know of any other player in the nba who averaged 14 points over a 3 year career yet bounced to 4 teams and ulrimately out of the league to play abroad.

With all of that, we don't go to the Final Four without Berry and without question was a dominant college player and one of our best all time players. I just don't think.of him as a 4, especially on offense.

You are far from alone in your assessment. Ron Rutledge once said in a private conversation that Berry is his all-time favorite Johnny.

Ron Artest played power forward in his 2 years at SJU.

In my opinion he was the best. If he played 4 years he would be in the inner circle of SJU greats with Mullin, Sealy, and Tony Jackson.

And I am just talking about pure talent and athletic ability.
Bill, Artest is one of my favorite all-time sju players. I equated him to Magic Johnson because he could do it all - score, rebound, pass, defend, handle the ball. He did that in the nba as well as at st johns. At St. John's he was the guy teams wanted to stop. Also not a protypucal 4 IMO because he could do so much and didn't play like a dominant big man.

Ron Artest had his personal issues, but he may be the strongest player to ever put on a St. John’s uniform. His father was also built like a Mack truck

He single-handedly took it on himself to shutdown Syracuse center Etan Thomas after he was abusing Tyrone Grant at the Carrier Dome.

Completely shut him down from midway on in the first half and keyed a great St. John’s comeback in the 98-99 season.

We had some great ones...... that's for sure. In my book Ron was the best all around defender I ever saw wearing a St. John's uniform.

LeRoy Ellis was a little before I got interested, but I heard he was great along with Sonny Dove. Mel Davis is in the defensive conversation and some of the others mentioned. Left out were Tony Jackson, Paultz and Johnny Warren.

We have a rich history. This is way before my time… but have any board members seen or heard stories about how great Mel Davis, Leroy Ellis, Sonny Dove, and Tony Jackson were? It’s been great learning more about George Johnson
Sonny Dove was a Soph on the first St. John's team I followed closely (Ellis & Jackson before my time. Dove is one of my 3 or 4 all time favorite Johnnies. One of only two Johnnies with both 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds and consensus 2nd team All American his senior year. 10th all time leading scorer and 2nd all time rebounder and could only play 3 years. Sonny was very smooth for a big man, was a top 5 draft pick in the late 1960s.
Mel Davis was a phenomenal rebounder himself at power forward; only played two years for St. Johns but averaged 21 points and 16 rebounds those years; super strong guy.

and Johnson of Ohio State, almost unknown and Barkley's
fatal dribble.

I was a Frosh in 1965 Spring Semester and like you thought Sonny Dove was the straw that stirred the drink . He was a Special Playsr for sure and so was George Johnson . But , as Panther has said on more than 1 occasion , there was something about Sonny that put him on a slightly higher plane than George . Remember too , Sonny was 6’7” or 6’8” more generously but , might have cleared 200 pounds dripping wett. Yet , he played the opponents bigger guy defensively . As for Berry and Johnson debate , I have to take Walter . He was College Player of the year in 1986 and Wooden Award winner . If Louie was a bit more cerebral Vs G’Town in the Final 4 game , he would have run the offense through Walter as Mullin was rendered ineffective by the box and 1 . Berry would have run wild with the ball and probably get Ewing in foul trouble . Just my opinion . Excuse this one time only reverting to no paragraphs . It was technical difficulties .

and two time MLB batting champ named Mel Davis, mentioned above, really could sky,
and allen Seiden., who could score.
