and Johnson of Ohio State, almost unknown and Barkley's
fatal dribble.
Sonny Dove was a Soph on the first St. John's team I followed closely (Ellis & Jackson before my time. Dove is one of my 3 or 4 all time favorite Johnnies. One of only two Johnnies with both 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds and consensus 2nd team All American his senior year. 10th all time leading scorer and 2nd all time rebounder and could only play 3 years. Sonny was very smooth for a big man, was a top 5 draft pick in the late 1960s.
Mel Davis was a phenomenal rebounder himself at power forward; only played two years for St. Johns but averaged 21 points and 16 rebounds those years; super strong guy.
I was a Frosh in 1965 Spring Semester and like you thought Sonny Dove was the straw that stirred the drink . He was a Special Playsr for sure and so was George Johnson . But , as Panther has said on more than 1 occasion , there was something about Sonny that put him on a slightly higher plane than George . Remember too , Sonny was 6’7” or 6’8” more generously but , might have cleared 200 pounds dripping wett. Yet , he played the opponents bigger guy defensively . As for Berry and Johnson debate , I have to take Walter . He was College Player of the year in 1986 and Wooden Award winner . If Louie was a bit more cerebral Vs G’Town in the Final 4 game , he would have run the offense through Walter as Mullin was rendered ineffective by the box and 1 . Berry would have run wild with the ball and probably get Ewing in foul trouble . Just my opinion . Excuse this one time only reverting to no paragraphs . It was technical difficulties .
