NYC kids dont go to St. John's -DN

I honestly feel bad for this kid. It is a hard lot to be a moron child but to be a talented moron with the people around you who are supposed to be looking out for you, trying to ride you like a meal ticket is sad. It is the basketball version of child stars. But now he's an adult. If he has any sense, he'll learn to shut up. For now, his nickname will be Different Strokes.

This kid sounds foolish..
it's like ummm you are going to Seton Hall which uses its close proximity to NYC as a recruiting tool. Not like you just chose to go to UCLA bro. You chose to go to an inferior program that is still in the general area.Have fun 20 miles away from home Magellan.

"Really nobody in New York City goes to St. John's unless you love the city," Whitehead said. "I do (love the city), but when it's time to leave, it's time to leave."

I can't even figure out what the hell this means(not that I've given it much thought), let alone consider it a diss. Idle chatter that a reporter
made in to a story.

Who gives a damn what this kid says, I for one certainly do not?
He chose the Hall good for him. His ego is larger than his brain.
How and why he chose the Hall were for the wrong reasons and cast a negative light on him, his crooked coach and Coach Willard.
Now the kid only makes himself look more foolish by continuing to open his mouth. He is ranked number 35 in ESPNs class he was not going to make or break our program or anybody's for that matter. This kid is no Pearl Washington or Kenny Smith who if for example would have picked SJU would have taken us over the top and made us the number 1 team in the country.
Before I wished him well, now I just hope he shuts his mouth.

It's going to be fun running up the score against Seton Hall in front of Losing Isaiah's family, coaches and friends.

I hope these reporters keep giving these kids an opportunity to speak. Between this nonsense and Khadeen Carrington saying Seton Hall is going to the Final Four, I'm having a blast just waiting for the day when we have to play them from here on out.

This kids legacy, the thing that he will be known for decades into the future, is the guy who chose the Hall over St. Johns during SJU's glory days because his coach used him to get a job.
SH will seriously suck during his frosh year and if he returns for a 2nd year they will only be NIT caliber. He will never see the big tourney playing there.... unless he chooses to stay 4 years.

Really starting to dislike this kid. It creates a rivalry though, which is a good thing. He's just such a dope with his comments.

much ado about nothing

Yes.

Isaiah Whitehead, senior basketball star at Abraham Lincoln HS, says New York City players don't go to St. John's

Question: Who is Mitchell Petit-Frere?

Mitchell Petit-Frere –– Sports Editor

[Mitchell's] been a great Sports Editor [at the Torch] the past year. Mitch came in as the biggest question mark, with only half a year of experience as a staff writer and fresh from a semester abroad where he picked up weird fashion trends like scarves in the summer.

HEADLINE: Some teenager in an ascot from the Torch claims Whitehead dissed SJ. Hilarity ensues.

I don't think he "dissed" us. I just think Whitehead is an idiot for saying that no one wants to stay in NYC and he is going to South Orange, 15 miles outside of the epicenter of New York City. He's a meal ticket for Tiny. No more no less.

"Really nobody in New York City goes to St. John's unless you love the city," Whitehead said. "I do (love the city), but when it's time to leave, it's time to leave."

Is this kid really that dumb? He says nobody in NYC goes to St. John's unless they love the city, and then goes on to say he loves the city.

Why should it matter where the kids are from? This isn't the Louie era anymore where he was grabbing a pocket full of subway tokens and going off recruiting. Just get the best fits for our team regardless of where they are from.

Maybe Tiny hasn't told him where it is yet.

No need for the kid to make comments like this. Nobody on this board is blaming him for his decision. He chose Seton Hall because he will be the star from day one and also was able to bring his HS coach along with him. I'm not, nor any St. John's fans, should hold that against him. He did what was best for him. A local product like Moe Harkless did what was best for him. He saw an opportunity to play right away at SJU, made the best of it, and is now in the NBA. It worked out for both parties involved -- fans got to see a very talented player make St. John's proud and Moe had a fantastic freshman year that resulted in a 1st round draft pick.

All kids are different. Some want to get away, some don't want to leave, some want immediate playing time, some are willing to wait. Our coaching staff has put a solid product on the court and generated a lot of buzz for our program. They've given kids an opportunity to compete for minutes and we've already seen some successful players come through the system the last few years (DJ Kennedy, Dwight Hardy, Justin Brownlee, Harkless) and it's possible we have a few pros on this roster right now (Sampson, Obekpa, Harrison, Jordan, etc.).

Just to be on the headline topic, millions of kids from the NYC Metro area can't wait for the chance to go to college SOMEWHERE else. Sure there are some very good to great schools in the NYC area, including Columbia, NYU, Fordham but many kids who grew up here want to experience living in another place and establishing their independence away from familiar environments. It's really no different for athletes.

Importantly though, even more kids from around the country see NYC as the ultimate college destination. NYU boasts students from all 50 states and 127 countries, for example, and I believe they have more applicants than any other US school. New college grads flock to NYC Metro, and have caused a renaissance in areas of Brooklyn and Queens that were undesirable a short time ago.

Lavin knows this, and is using NYC as a recruiting advantage that places like Lexington, KY, Bloomington IN, Columbus OH, or dozens of big time college programs can't even touch. He is reaping rewards recruiting in a way we have NEVER seen here. We won't get every recruit of course, but we are getting our share.

Recruiting and where kids choose to go and play basketball is often a function of the player making a decision on where he may get the most playing time ASAP..

I don't know Whitehead or Carrington's abilities but, is Whitehead a better player than Jordan will be for us? Jordan will probably need 2 seasons here to launch a NBA career. If that's well known, maybe Whitehead decided he wasn't interested in being second banana next season?

That being said, I think Lavin should have the ability to recruit and land any player in the Metro Area he chooses to pursue and be the prime program in our Region..Seton Hall should never be able to out recruit us for prime talent, all things being equal..But, kids like Whitehead may not be the priority recruit that Lavin is looking for.. Offering a player is not the same as saying he's a must have recruit.

Fun times in South Orange, NJ:

@BrendanPrunty: Seton Hall announces its Midnight Madness on Friday. Kevin Willard will take on Kobayashi in a hot dog eating contest. Not a misprint.
