NYC kids dont go to St. John's -DN

"Really nobody in New York City goes to St. John's unless you love the city," Whitehead said. "I do (love the city), but when it's time to leave, it's time to leave."

"What should be just as concerning for St. John's is what Whitehead said when asked if he's received any grief for choosing Seton Hall over St. John's: “Not really."

I cant wait to abuse him when he comes to the garden... oh sorry your team is not good enough to play at the garden. See you at Carnessecca getting blocked by a Obepka left and right.

I am sorry this was not a popular comment but I really don't wish this kid well. These comments are immature, unnecessary and inflammatory.

I dont see any diss. It's reality. Kids who wanna stay like Moe stay. All of our scholarship players are from out of town and theres no problem with that. Most kids want to get away from the distractions of home. You cant applaud Rysheed for choosing us over hometown Temple then bash this kid for doing the same exact thing. No need to wish ill will on the kid. I realize there are other circumstances surrounding his choice that leave a bad taste in peoples mouths but he said nothing but the truth here.

Whitehead chose the least sexy program in the Big East and the lowest profile head coach and coaching staff in the Big East. Why? Only because his high school coach was part of the transaction. That is the only way a low profile program could land a recruit of Whitehead's stature.

Bingo... Is this kid really this stupid or what?.. lol... Can't wait to CRUSH the hall twice this year... in the mean-time our staff is working hard to land a top 5 class for '15... whether the kids are from NYC or Sri Lanka.. COULD CARE LESS... just win baby!!.

Ummmm.....it's COULDN'T care less (a contraction of " could not care less" ). If we are going to trash someone, let's at least use proper grammar so we don't make fools out of ourselves. Remember, we represent an institution of higher learning. ;)

And didn't Moe originally commit to UCONN?

Personally, I don't see anywhere where he is dissing SJU. And people on here can talk smack on seton hall all they want, but let's not forget that it wasn't that long ago that we were the "Seton Hall" of the conference...it wasn't that long ago that we only had like 5 scholarship players on our team....it wasn't that long ago when we were just hoping to finish with .500 record.

And how hard is Lavin really going after the local kids?? We do not have one player from New York on our current roster that will contribute significant minutes this year. If we don't care about local kids, why should they care about us?

Are you saying, Lavin doesn't go after local kids? C'mon! You're waaaaaay off!

There is a New York product who will contribute significant minutes for us.... Obekpa. He may not be originally from New York, but he was a resident when we landed him.

Once again, your belief we don't "care about local kids" cannot be further from the truth.

Difference is...this kid and his family/coaches purportedly reached out to us and, based on the facts/rumors, would have been at SJ had we yielded to his coaches extortion attempt. So, his comments have a scent of BS to them..

That said, what else do we expect him to say...

Why should this be a surprise or concerning (at this point)...In the landscape of NYC sports, Whitehead is not "big enough" and college BBall has been down due to our lack of success over the past 10 years...

I will be more concerned when we are still losing recruits after some national success...but will never be shocked because kids will always yearn for the "greener grass"...nature of the beast...we will, however, return to getting our fair share...

Here is our roster and their listed hometown per ESPN:

Jamal Branch Kansas City, MO
Phil Greene IV Chicago, IL
Marc-Antoine Bourgault Saint-Melo, France
God'sgift Achiuwa Port Harcourt, Nigeria
Christian Jones Arlington, TX
Max Hooper Carmel Valley, CA
D'Angelo Harrison Missouri City, TX
Chris Obekpa Makurdi, Nigeria/Centereach, N.Y.
Jakarr Sampson Akron, OH
Sir'Dominic Pointer Detroit, MI
David Lipscomb Riverdale, GA
Felix Balamou ??? Espn didn't have his hometown listed
Jamal White Roosevelt, NY
Orlando Sanchez Nagua, Dominican Republic
Khadim Ndiaye Queens, NY
Sam Sealy Medford, NY

So I will give you Obekpa......but other than him, no one is from NY. So if Lavin is going after them, he sure seems to be striking out alot, which is weird because he is known for his recruiting (as he has proven time and time again). It's just funny that he is a skilled enough recruiter to get a kid to go to school on the opposite side of the country with no family or friends around, but he can't get local kids to stay.

ICYMI: #SJUBB landed the highest-rated and best two players out of the New York area in the last two years: @moe_harkless and @Obekpa12.

Just because no one else (on the team) is from New York doesn't mean he didn't go after them.

Chris McCullough
Jermaine Lawrence
Isaiah Whitehead

Those are 3 kids whom he targeted from the NYC area. Frankly, I don't care where a kid resides who ends up on the team. Just assemble a solid bunch. IMO, Lavin and the staff have brought in a solid, group of a players, regardless of the geographic region of the team.

Just because a kid can play basketball doesn't mean he can say something significant in an interview. Thankfully NYC has never been more popular as a place to live and explore, and as such SJU holds a major recruiting advantage when positioned well by a salesman like Lavin. Choosing Seton Hall over SJU is not exactly like choosing Duke, as Seton Hall is also in proximity to NYC. Who cares, really? Not an insult.

.... for every top recruit from New York that wants to leave NYC there are dozens who want to play in The New York Metro area.
