'Nova Game Thread

 It is crystal clear how tired these guys are in the later stages of the game. You can see it in their legs as they are going up for shots and layups. If we were deeper, we would have kept the lead tyat we had with 6 mins remaining yesterday. Hopefully, next year tells a much different story, especially with a legit player at the 1.

Yes ZanMan

fatigue, fatigue, fatigue I posted recently.

my son Joe and I went to game courtside no less(via bus thank God almighty) lousy weather - here is my take I I did not read anything here yet so pardon any repetition:

1. Green great;
2. God disappeared (and I thought he was supposed to be forever by our side - sorrow about this silliness etc.)
3. Great opportunity at end of game what 11 second s left and we have ball; with tied score;
4. I said to myself (my teen son gets mad when I talk) with Harrison out with fouls it's not good and it wasn't;
5. let's see what else - oh yes - I hate losing!
6. I did not see Lavin while the papers said he was there;
7. I did not see all the former players they announced except for Barkley and Felipe;
8. Best laug of year was video of what's his name?* playing cowbell with belly sticking out and our band roaring;
9. dance team a little riss-kay (spelling?) but getting more professional

* Wil Farrell

The only people who are unhapy with this team are the ones who had unreasonable expectations to start the year. Honestly, once we lost Pelle and Jakarr I scaled back my expectations.

Absolutely SJU - I could care less if we have zero as in 000 wins the rest of hte year - what could we expect - future very bright
and these kids are playing hard

 overall, the team executed very well. that's the promising part. the shots didn't fall and that MUST be addressed. it's been this way for too long, now.

Executed very well???/ What is wrong with some of you!!

No need to continue to make solid points to the delusional, austour. Most of us know we currently do not have a good team, but we have a good foundation. Unfortunately, there are a handful posters who either doesn't know anything about the game; over-the-top silly; or both.

I'm only Sunday morning reading the posts
MJ and John and others --- for whatever this is worth:
My son and I sat courtside and throughout the first half or so most SJU fans nearby agreed: we had a hand full of shots go in and out or whatever, "unlucky" -and to play Villanova even on their down year close in OT not bad for such a young team

 So in other words, if one disagrees with the opinions of certain positive ( blinded by loyalty) fans, their opinion is worthless or they know nothing of basketball...... Now that's about as ignorant a statement that I have ever seen on this site. One has to be blind not to recognize the present deficiencies of this team. If you choose to excuse it, that's fine as I said that the team will improve in the future but to constantly make excuses for poor performance and or coaching strategies does nothing to help your credibility or your own knowledge of the game. I know of a few posters on this site who are activly involved in the game on a coaching and scouting level. Their opinions are unbiassed and purely based on their observations, not blind loyalty and they presently see more than a few obvious issues with this team. And just ask yourself this, if this was a Norm Roberts coached team, would you all be so easy on them? Me thinks not.

If this was a Norm Roberts coached team, Stith would be the best player.

Exactly, Tom! This wouldn't even be a conversation, if Norm Roberts was still coaching this team. We probably wouldn't have not one of the freshmen on the team. Stith probably would be the best or second best player on the team.

+1
We are lacking a center, a point guard and power forward to compliment the current group.
Pelle never made it here. Lindsey was really a 2 guard but could not shoot to save himself and Sampson could have given Moe Harkless some competition for minutes and have him work harder for his minutes.
We have a true PG on the way in Jamal---check.
We have a shot at Chris O for the center position---check.
We still have a strong shot at PF Gathers----check.
Add another quality big forward with length and a solid combo player and next year some of the critics will claim the redmen were their team all along and will start using terms of endearment like they never waivered as fans......but we will remember who they are! LOL!

Excellent points '72

it's seems to me like taking CC out of Yankee lineup - everyone else is pushed into the wrong positions - the 2 becomes the 1 - when we get the strong center God and Moe can be better served at the forward etc. whatever; Green can move off the point.

I think I've exhausted my allotment of posts for this Sunday morning

With Norm a very nice guy our walkons would be starting - er hvsae to get real and stay appreciative of what's happening - if Villanova can't blow us out this year - it's a good sign (Lavin - such a fine mind - Bread?).

This is exactly the point I've been trying to convey since the game ended yesterday.

 Gift was the most disappointing. He had 1(ONE) rebound I believe. That's unacceptable. Our numbers as a team were all better than nova except for a big rebounding disparity. I know we have no frontline, but Gift needs to do more to win some rebounds.

I said I ran out of my allotment of posts this morning but I agree MCNPA AND also only 2 Points, TWO POINTS for a JC All - American. Says it all about the loss and our future needs.

And, yes, if you think we have a good shot at being anymore than a .500 team with 6 freakin' players, one guy on the bench and NO SIZE, then YOU DON'T KNOW anything about this sport.
It's like bringing a slingshot to a World War.  We get dominated on the glass, both sides of the court, nightly. That will change next season. FTR, I think Dunlap called some very questionable time outs. 9 seconds left in regulation, and the time out with a minute and a half left in overtime.

Valid points Guinness -

but let's remember a little levity around all this frustration about losing - "slingshot to the World War" - which one I or II? sorry about that -

I'm enjoying what I'm seeing and don't watn to wait til next year to enjoy - I'd take this over last year's senior led team any day - we have talent!

Since you didn't have the nerve to quote a particular poster, I'll take it upon myself to point out to you that I played at a high enough level to have played against at least 40 or 50 DI players, got recruited by several DI programs, played against a handful of NBA players, so if you are aiming this at a poster like myself, I suggest you stop making assumptions about who knows what or who knows who.

Last year's starting team was no bigger than this year's. We brought Burrell off the bench and didn't even play Evans the first half of the season. Still, we made the tourney and beat a ton of good teams. Our rebounding was spread out and it wasn't a problem. That's the difference between seniors and frosh but I don't see much boxing going on. I believe we're better playing man but now they're so used to zone it's a problem for guys like Gift and Moe. I also thought Dunlap spit the bit vs Nova with bad T/Os and the ridiculous oversight of not pulling Harrison after his third. I said to the person I was with he'd have his fourth within 30 seconds and sadly, that was on the money and eventually cost us the game. If fans can see this coming why can't our highly paid assistant? He also seems to have no answer for guys like Wayns who get dominant against us. He's so in love with his high fallutin defenses he blows simple CYO game coaching techniques like doubling the hot guy etc. Nova was doubling us and getting away with it all day.

You've inadvertently proved my point even more. (Like the WWI or II crack, btw, haha) I wouldn't trade last year for anything, one of my favorite year's supporting a Johnnie team. My favorite since Hatten's senior year. But, that's the biggest difference for all the naysayers (not yourself, of course). You had a veteran-laden club, all 20 or 21 years of age, all used to the rigors of a 40-minute game and the hustle and intensity required for 18 Big East games. We took advantage of a lot of younger teams last season. Now, we're the younger team, playing with, a pretty much unheard of, 6-man rotation. We're the youngest team in the COUNTRY, and the youngest team in all our years of Division I basketball.
There are going to be bumps in the road, obviously, I would think. For anyone that wants to call me a blind homer, go right ahead. How about you ask my wife or my daughter how much of a blind homer I was (stupidly) screaming at my TV for a good 15 minutes straight yesterday, and especially, when Gift tried to throw that pass to Pointer. I was livid. Just because I don't pound on the keyboard (like a lot of you also restrain yourselves) and act like a 7-year-old who had my ball taken from me on this website, doesn't mean I'm a homer. I want to win every game, like any fan of any team. I want to win by 60 points, no matter if we're playing Fordham or Duke.
Someone needed to say it, because, Captain Obvious here, we ALL feel this way, I would assume. I choose to be realistic about it.

 Bobre, I actually agree with you wholehardedly on your last post. We had more size, though, and a lot more depth.

I had no problem with Dunlap's last timeout. Pointer had the ball in his hands, and I felt he was either gonna be out of control or turn the ball over. I agree he should've pulled Harrison out of the game after he picked up his 3rd foul. How long do you sit him once you pull him?

How many players or teams have actually stopped Wayns this season? Not too many (that's for sure). 'Nova isn't having a good season, but Wayns is having a super season. Wayns was making NBA-like plays yesterday. Wayns last shot, which essentially was the shot that sent the game into OT, was defended well, but he hit a very, tough shot. That was certainly NBA'ish.

Some of you also forget that Dunlap can't use all of his tools due to our roster being shorthanded. Some of you also forget Dunlap has won two D-2 national titles. Before some one comes on here and says something silly like, he's not in D-2 now.... Well, he won with guys playing against players on their same level. The same as he coaching with now. The difference is he probably was coaching with a full roster and a roster suitable for him to be very interchangable.

I don't care about Dunlap's D2 record. My comments are primarily about yesterday's game and things that I consider to be mistakes. I think there's a reason we went man yesterday but it's not as if you can turn it on and off without problems. Gift's footwork just wasn't up to the task. I happen to like the matchup zone but you need personnel to play it. We also allow so many more open shots than we get it's a shame. Since Norm blew the St Francis game we've been allowing hot players to beat us with threes or penetration. In the old days someone like Matt brust or Lamont Middleton would have taken their heads off. I'll know we're back when that crap stops.

MJD/Guinness:

Just came back from getting my son to his SAT training. Thanks for the responses.

Even though we were at the garden, I think I heard you yelling MJD!

Homer? Is that Simpson, Bush, Frank Baker?

I mentioned to a SJU fan behind our seats (once again annoying my teen son for talking to others) if we only had e.g. Justin Burrell redshirt from last year to give a little experience - and this fan said "no way" was not a Burrell fan but you know what I meant.

It is what it is - no denying many losses - I do not see any more wins - but there is no denying we are going in perhaps the best direction ever since Joe Lapchick ("force them to retire at age 65") days

I knew you wouldn't care about his D2 record. Hence, I prefaced someone wouldn't care in my post. You're predictable. Yes, we allow many open shots, but you just stated that we don't have the personnel to play it. Hence, why shots are generally open. I also thought we did a fairly, good job of eliminating a bunch of open shots by 'Nova. 'Nova got some open shots after getting offensive rebounds. They had us scrambling after the offensive caroms.

You'll know when we're back when someone takes off the head of the opposition? Ha! Yeah, right. I'll know we're back when we start getting things back on track next season.

 SSG...no, I'm in agreement with you. They were others who refer to people like me as "a blind homer" and, I frankly don't care what others think about me, but a blind homer I am not.

I'm assuming I was lumped into the "blind homer" group, as well. I'm also not a blind homer. But, I know how to go about criticizing or critiquing matters without acting like a first or second-grader in rec. league ball.
