NIT

I’d like to see the N.I.T. used as a play in to the NCAA tournament.

May have a slight scheduling difficulty no?

It would require a change to the season. Start a week earlier. Let bubble teams control their own destinies.

OUR FIRST OPPONENT WILL BE AT IONA OR SYRACUSE,OR RUTGERS..OR WAGNER

St. John’s won’t play Iona in the NIT Tournament because Iona will be dancing in the NCAA Tournament.
They have to win their tournament to dance.  Cluess' teams danced 8 out of 10 seasons.   the only two times he didn't make the tourney, his teams finished first but lost their tournament.

I could be wrong but I thought that that schools couldn't refuse an NIT bid without a good reason (illness, injury, etc).                     It’s possible that with Covid being a concern last year , that was enough of a reason to Decline a NiT Bid .   Plus , there was the rumor that many of the Players were negative on playing added games .
I believe the decision was based solely on Covid - players still were not vaccinated and to expose them to additional risk considering maybe the Delta variant surge was not worth it.

That was the reason announced to the public and the press,  it was not the sole reason.

If the NIT is a losers tournament, St. John's fits right in.
But you don't get in if you are in the category of the Biggest Losers.

I'm not even sure St. John's would be in the NIT anymore as of tonight.

Pretty crazy that the team simply needed to win 2 consecutive games they were FAVORED in to get near/on the bubble. Instead they lost both and are now on the NIT bubble.

No matter how much I try lowering my expectations this team manages to drag them even lower.

Let me confirm to you that we are not in the NIT.  We will enter March with 2 wins against the Top 100.  We will likely end the season with 1 win in conference against a team .500 or better.  We have absolutely no OOC wins of significance.  That is not a resume that even gets you on the NIT bubble.

We are listed as a 5 seed on the main NIT bracketology website (dratings.com - there are hardly any others), though this was before yesterday's result and of course the conference winners who fail to win their conference tournaments will receive auto bids, thus taking up spots from the 6 through 8 lines. Doubt we'd be in as of today.

At this point though I'm starting to not even care about the NIT (which I hardly cared about to begin with). The team has checked out defensively, similar to how they literally quit on the NIT last year, so why should I care?

Older posters might look at the NIT differently than younger posters. Someone mentioned Walt Frazier and his So. Illinois Salukis as an example of a memorable NIT, and when Al Mc Guire thumbed his nose at the NCAA when he didn't like Marquette's placement and he took them to the NIT instead.

I like to think a young, hungry team can use the NIT as a springboard for the following season, it's been done often.

Having said all that, after DePaul debacle, and as Weatherman astutely points out we should not be given an invite, our body of work does not deserve it.

I don't think a lot of younger posters appreciate St. John's success in the NIT when it was considered the premier post-season tournament and legends like Schmitty McKracken and Sy Goldbaumstein were bombing set shots from 12 feet away.

Watching SJU these last two games, Creighton and De Paul I would classify them as the complete opposite of a young and hungry team. Maybe a team looking to put the balls away for the year.

Last I checked we were a projected 4 seed , Will the school play in the NIT ? Or will they choose arrogance again?

I think we'll make it as a 6 seed. I'll be close though given the 7 and 8 lines, and maybe some 6, will go to auto bids.

If invited then the school absolutely needs to accept. 100%.

If invited, regardless what the school wants, I hope they leave it to a players only vote to decide

Honestly I think there's 99% odds we'd accept. Last year COVID was a legit excuse for some teams, but prior to last year I think it was well over a decade since the last team declined an invite. We really could've benefitted from playing in this last year.
