NIT

Assuming Champ is 100% sure that he's leaving, why would he want to play in the NIT? Nothing he does will improve his draft position, and he'd be risking injury.

It's would be more for Stanley/Pinzon and less about Champ.

Along with others like Soriano and Nyiwe. Also learn to play without him and a guy like Wheeler (if he's returning) gets to have a bigger offensive role.

Then let Champ pull an NCAA Bowl game excuse and we go on without him.

We are currently projected a #  5 seed on the NIT Bracketology website. My question is (barring a huge turnaround that gets us in the NCAA’s) , will Mike Cragg decline an NIT Bid like they arrogantly did last year? Or will they honor SJU’s NIT tradition and compete for another NIT Championship?

They turned down the NIT because we had 8 players who wanted out and didnt want to play for Anderson

Here's my take on the NIT. We are not anywhere close to a lock. Much more work to do to get in. 2-1 and a win or two in the BET, I think.

If invited I would go. I recall many times (admittedly a while back), teams that won it or did very well in the NIT, were back in the Big Dance the following year, e.g., I might be mis remembering, but Syracuse, Virginia, Michigan and some others.

Last year we didn't go but I think that was Covid related, and we had a few guys with a foot out of the door as soon as the season ended

NIT was good enough for Walt Frazier

If invited (which is not a certainty) AD Cragg should ask the team members what they want to do and follow accordingly.

Personally I hope the Johnnies play in the NIT because, as pointed out in a prior post,  the added games would benefit the younger players.

I agree 100%, Otis. It would be a good experience for those who will be returning next season but, if the kids' hearts aren't into playing, we'll get shellacked and there's nothing to be gained by playing under those circumstances

Good to see you back. We've missed you the last couple games.  /media/kunena/emoticons/sideways.png

No matter what decision is made by the administration, it comes
down to whether the players want to play or not.  If they do, they can gain more game experience and possible go on a run like the 88/89 and 02/03 Teams and if not you have the Robert Morris debacle or last years’ decline.

Personally I think it would be good for the players that we think and hope are coming back to gain more experience while for the others, it might give them an opportunity to finish on a high note.

It should not be up to the players if they want to play in the NIT.  If they dont want to play postseason basketball, I would question if they have a place on the team.

The only way St Johns does not accept it bid to the NIT is if there is going to be a mass exodus of players like last year.  If not, its not even a question.

I could be wrong but I thought that that schools couldn't refuse an NIT bid without a good reason (illness, injury, etc).                     It’s possible that with Covid being a concern last year , that was enough of a reason to Decline a NiT Bid .   Plus , there was the rumor that many of the Players were negative on playing added games .

I believe the decision was based solely on Covid - players still were not vaccinated and to expose them to additional risk considering maybe the Delta variant surge was not worth it.

i also believe that schools, within reason, cannot refuse an NIT bid.
also, i thought you cannot be in the NIT with a below 500 record.

Do we still tell recruits about our Helms Foundation title?

No, we drew the line at telling them about the Lapchick Tournament and the ECAC Holiday Festival

A few thoughts on the NIT as we watch the last three games and then our shot in the BET.

1. We are definitely a bubble team for the NIT as of now.  Just a side note (Anderson only needs to win one more game to keep his meaningless . 500 record streak going. Pretty sure he will but that far from guarantees us a bid.
2. Last season a lot of teams backed out because of COVID. I don't see that happening this year. I don't know the rules on being required to play but I don't see that being an issue.
3. If we are lucky enough to secure a bid, I am sure we will grab it regardless of any player opting out and I don't expect many will and it would only concern me if someone other then Wheeler, Champs, Coburn or Smith did as the last two aren't coming back and the first two may have pro aspirations.
4. There won't be many teams that we can't beat in the NIT on a good day but as we know there haven't been enough of those this season.
5. We also won't be seeded high enough to play a team that would be embarrassing to lose to and in all honesty there won't be many of those either.
6. I am taking it one game at a time and will try to enjoy at least another five games as four probably  won't be enough to get us in the NIT anyway.
7. I have probably given this way too much thought but I really think this team has underachieved despite all its flaws and for the most part I enjoy watching them.

OUR FIRST OPPONENT WILL BE AT IONA OR SYRACUSE,OR RUTGERS..OR WAGNER
The powers that be will never let it be Iona (who is probably getting a Dance bid anyway). Losing to them would be a publicity nightmare and I’m sure Cragg and company would never let that happen for obvious reasons.

St. John’s won’t play Iona in the NIT Tournament because Iona will be dancing in the NCAA Tournament.
