Dennis Wolff
Paul Hewitt
Has Bobby Gonzalez been mentioned? He was all the rage here before the Lavin hire, or was it longer ago than that? Of course he self destructed too.
McKillop 14 years after he should have been hired

Isn't Hit the Gym Slob your buddy? He posted on the board that Cal was in his living room and told him and his dad that he would take the job.

I think that was a little before my time on boards. I started posting around year 3 of Norm. Remember that story circulating but don't recall source. Thought was part of old "Louie has cancer" / Cal thing.

Not saying they were right on everything and bunch of people on forums had issues with them but Maven definitely was close to people in and around program at least right before and during Norm's time.

Cal wanted the job. That is true. He knew he could make a ton of money here on top of his salary and he's one of the only guys that could have done so.

He absolutely would have come here, back in 2004. The reason it didn't happen was the thing you just inquired about.

Now, I think he would have left here after 4 or 5 years for either Kentucky or the NBA (no way we could compete with that). It would have been interesting to see how things would have panned out afterwards. Memphis has not come close to reaching those heights again, since he left. It probably would have been similar here.

Before Norm was hired Cal wasn't really Cal yet. And never sure about cancer urban legend thing.
I know people were still bringing up Call's name late into Norm era though where it really was no longer feasible.

The story has never been confirmed, but I know Louie believes 100% that it happened. Calipari has consistently denied it, because, why wouldn't he?

Yes, being at Kentucky has raised Cal's profile, but that would be true of anybody who has success there. He was my first choice back in 04, because I thought that the job he did at UMASS in the 90s, was one of the great building jobs, ever (I wouldn't even call it rebuilding, because the program was nothing before he got there).

I can confirm that AD Ed Manetta spoke to Cal in 1998. No idea if Cal would have came here but they did have a few conversations. Cal at the time wasn’t doing that well with the Nets.

Yes in fact he only lasted 20 games into the next season. Imagine how different the last 20 years would be if it had been Cal instead of Uncle Phil. Instead of penny ante violations with Keita the school could have gone big time death penalty! I only partly jest. But provided there wasn't much damage I bet he'd have had WWW sending kids to STJ and even when he left, no matter the violations, the program would have been in better shape than it was post Pittsburgh (speaking of HTGS).

He only lasted 20 games the next year, but in 98, they made the playoffs, and were considered an up-and-coming club.

I know they came very close in 2004. A Memphis fan board even reported, immediately after Memphis lost in the Round of 32, that John was taking the job, and had agreed in principle to a deal. Who knows how credible that was, though?

The second choice in 2004 later became the first choice in 2010: Paul Hewitt. Georgia Tech gave him that big extension after they went to the National Title Game, and that died quickly.

Doherty? I think, in reality, only Mr. Reilly wanted him. The guy was 8-20 at UNC two years prior. That's all you need to know, IMO.

Great article on Senator John Blutarsky who has as much chance of coaching ST John's as does Eric Musselman.

He would be a good choice, he was at Faber for 7 years, that sounds like stability and success to me! BTW, what’s Faber’s NET? Are they on our OOC schedule next year?
