A coach can't guarantee what a kid will or won't do. A coach can only show what kind of man/teacher/role model he is by how he deals with situations when they arise - as they always will.
Jarvis showed who and what he was and I found it despicable. Are wins and losses the only measure of a coach? If you had told me Jarvis was guaranteed to win the NCAA tourney if he was brought back, I would've said no."
Wish more sports fans thought this way. In general, the past twenty years or so, sports isn't even that enjoyable anymore...I care what is on the court, and I acknowledge the humanity of our players first, basketball second.
But nowadays, we worry about recruits two years down the line, the next crappy coach, or in the pros, we care more about salary cap issues, etc.
Just because everyone else is doing it, doesn't mean we have to. Sorry, but I want no part of Calipari, Jarvis, or any other win-above-all-else coaches who leave programs with shame.
Some y'all call Lavin a salesman, but ya know what, I am grateful to have a coach with some class and dignity. Someone who is not acting like a barbarian on the sideline or off the court for the matter. And one who puts real effort into improving his players as people.
And if he does pull off two NCAAs and two NITs in five years, then yeah, I ain't complaining.
I love St. John's basketball, but it's also amazing how bad this program was for too long, and I agree with another poster who mentioned that Lavin has restored SJU's perception positively all things considered.

I'm old now or something, because I wish we could just focus on the game and be proud of a group that is playing its tail off, with seniors who have graduated early, and some young men have truly matured while here.
