Next Coach?

Learning on the job? What the hell. If he did not know the job from Day 1 he should never have been hired. What he does not know is how to be an in game coach. No adjustments ever. 5 years was enough. Goodbye Lavin.

Could the delay in any type of announcement indicate an effort to find out if the possible successor the school would prefer is interested and if not then they announce the extension.
Doesn't make sense to pay Lavin off and then find out your choice to take over is not interested.

Or maybe our beloved AD's status is being reviewed first. Whatever. It's all meaningless conjecture at this point.

Mark Jackson. If there's one thing I know, you're not shi{ as a coach unless you have some type of blackmail scandal stemming from adultery! Also we need to get a little scummier if we want to win, Lav's hair just isn't enough.

Only if Mark's wife will screech the national anthem before each game.

You are correct Paul, I think Huggie should wear a shirt and tie too.
But, I will grant him some slack because Morgantown has just a slightly more relaxed sense of fashion than NYC.

But also, Huggins has been doing it for a long time. Lavin wore a suit at UCLA, wore a suit for ESPN, but then he comes to SJU and thinks everyday is casual Friday. That's what pisses me off most of all.

The no tie look is actually a fishion trend. You may not like it but that is a fact. Many coaches have started doing it and you now see it in places where it would have never been dreamed of in the past. Lavin is actually a trend setter in that sense.

Who else? Mike Brey, Huggins... ?

And I still say that it's more about Lavin's respect for the job. Do you think he would've ever tried to stop wearing a suit at ESPN? No, they would've told him to shut up and do his job.
But I take this act as an insult towards St Johns.

I know I'm probably crazy about this though, so I admit it's a pet peeve, not something that should actually be held against coach.

Were you equally upset when Looie was wearing sweaters?

i think Desco is one of the young posters like me...

Please see my post above - can the older posters please let us know what the thoughts were of Louie's sweaters?
Didnt bother me..don't recall if we wore a shirt and tie under the sweater.

I certainly wouldn't want to take an AD job where I was powerless to make changes immediately, especially with regard to the flagship sport.

FWIW............

Obviously passions are running high re Steve's extension

Whether you want him extended or not, now is the time to be sharing your thoughts, observations and advice with Bobby via email.

Do you believe he would take the time to read/consider such emails?

The fact that he used the term "advice" scares me a bit. Is Bobby that unprepared that he needs advice from the fans on how to proceed in the future?

The top ADs are at football schools where the big money is. The highest paid makes over $3mill/year. Might find one who wants to get out of the football first thing if they are at a school like say Duke where it is not so great. Duke's AD has a history with Catholic schools (Notre Dame, Tulane ). He also makes about $1 million a year so he's need a big enticement. But it might be worth hiring him as a consultant to find a qualified AD. His bio page mentions a bunch of ADs that he mentored:

I can tell you. But first I need to know how you voted ...

That sounds like something Saddam Hussein might have said.

Only if Saddam had the best interests of SJU basketball at heart.

He's talking about President Bobby of SJU.

But don't let that get in the way of your juvenile reason for not wanting Bobby Hurley or any 'Dukie' :)

I'm just shaking my head that there are people here that don't want a former Duke player as a coach. I'm not saying I want him, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter where he played or coach before.

Hire Christian Laettner. Like the Hurleys he has a burning desire to win, and doesn't care who he ticks off doing that. I'm not serious, but the TV documentary "I hate Christian Laettner" is very good. I agree with you Mike - anyone who burns to win like the Hurleys do, is okay with me.

With all due respect, Kevin White has been AD at 2 of the absolute best schools in terms of how their athletic programs do across the board. Since he arrived at Duke, the Duke football team has also endured their absolute best stretch by far in many many years. I would be more shocked of Kevin White becoming our next AD than Billy Donovan becoming our next coach, and I dont think either can happen. Kevin White's trajectory seems like if he wants to move he'd be looking at somewhere like Stanford or another school that competes for the Capital One Cup title, etc.

That said, I think your idea of hiring him as a consultant would be an excellent one.
