Next Coach?

I think that if we get another coach, then Lavin will be gone by Friday. Why keep khim any longer if SJU knows that he's gone?

I think the decision one way or the other needs to come Tuesday the latest. Let the weekend of basketball finish and make your move. Hopefully some of the coaches still alive headed into next week decide they'd like a challenge.

I agree.

Question
If Dayton beats Oklahoma and advances to the sweet16, and he's our top target. Do we wait until they go out and then contact him, and put the Hurleys on hold?
If we go that route, maybe Archie goes to a P5 school, and while putting the Herleys on hold could go somewhere this this.

Tough call, but I really really want Archie.

Send out feelers through back channels the same day Lavin is let go if he is indeed let go. If no interest, keep it silent and move on to the next guy.

They should have already contacted agents of coaches they have interest in, to see if there is mutual interest.

Let me throw this question out there: do we believe Lavin is a better coach today than he was five years ago?

Players learn and develop; coaches do too. It's been a turbulent few years – cancer, death of his father, loss of Dunlap, ups and downs in recruitment.

Do we believe Lavin is better prepared for the next five years than he was for his first five?
Based on his recruiting the last 2 years and no bigs in the fold for next year the answer has to be no. For a short time it looked like we had a coach who could recruit. Now we must keep an eye on summer school enrollees. I would love coach Lav back, but not without bigs who can play.

Adonis will be our Bob Lanier/Josh Smith. Who said we have no bigs??????

One out of 4 is 25%. Two out of 5 is 40%.
it's actually 2 out of 4, Lavin didn't coach one season due to cancer, so with him coaching it's 50 percent
This is such BS only a moron would buy it! It took until these guys were seniors to make the T you really think Lavin would have led them to the T when they were FR and Dunlop led them to 13 wins? You sound just like Lavin spewing his nonsense.

Then why didn't you buy it? ;)

Had one of my infrequent lucid moments?

To be clear on my change in position, what put me over the top was how the SDSU coach couldn't wipe that grin off his face and was almost laughing when he first discussed facing a "Lavin-led St. John's team." He was so relaxed in the halftime interview with that same stupid grin and his players were laughing. There is no doubt in my mind that he would have rather faced us than Buffalo if given the choice and that is sickening to me.

Buffalo was more competitive with a higher seed and a better team than we were with #8 SDSU, and Buffalo was much younger and the core pieces were assembled by Hurley weeks after he was hired.

How does Hurley find a 6'7 240 pound pf that averages 17.5 and 9.2 less than a month after he is hired when we have to start four guards against a team that starts four forwards?

Lavin did a tremendous job rescuing this program from complete obscurity and I am thankful to him for that. He had some bad breaks that weren't really his fault and that really hampered his ability to be successful.

In the end, I don't believe he is a good enough program architect and his style of play is too maddening for me to sign on for another handful of years while I see two exceptional younger coaches that have literally everything it takes to build and maintain a top 25 program. We can't miss out on them now or we will never have a chance to get back to where we once were.

No need to keep clarifying your flip flopping Belgian waffling beliefs Marillac. We understand.
Of course you know Cluess is older than Lavs and Hurley is middle aged mid forties already.
Of course none have ever recruited a top 50 player or had a top 25 team (I think old Lavs had one this year).
But carry on! ;)

Norm Roberts was young when they anointed him the next up and comer. I remember his name being spewed on Redmen.com as the up and comer recruiter extraordinaire. That worked out great, part of the 10 year purgatory era.

You don't win in the big leagues div 1 without NBA caliber players...Cluess would be like a CYO coach at this level.. We would be basement dwellers...The BC of the ACC

What players on Nova are NBA players?

NONE and that's why they are going home courtesy of a bubble team!!

Yea I'd rather lose as a 9 seed.
You're right
Plus is there any real benefit to winning 30 games a year, finishing in first placr in the BE, and beating St. J's 2 or 3 times per season?

Don't understand your point! Has nothing to do with the discussion. The point is the more NBA caliber talent the better the chance to win. NC state was a bubble team and has a couple NBA types and beat a 1 seed with none. I think it's much worse to lose as a 1 seed this early than losing as a 9 seed without your best defender and shot blocker. Nobody remembers the regular season it's about the dance
Agree post season is most important but real fans are fans of every game their team plays. Would you rather walk out of the Garden after beating Duke, Nova, the Cuse during the regular season or after losing to them?

Sure!!
But it was just as good walking out of the Carrier Dome after beating Syracuse before they lost McCullough in front of 25,000 stunned Orange fans.
But carry on.

And we all know Lavin does that all the time or at least more than Jay Wright. And you stole carry on from Moose! Carry on !

Or maybe Moose is as big a fan of Kansas as me.

Decision needs to be made sooner than later to be fair to whomever is going to be the coach next year whether it is Lavin or someone else. If it is Lavin, he can show that he is not a lame duck while recruiting, if it is someone else, he can are-recruit Jordan and the verbal and signed commits we have and start recruiting other playerss.

It they are to pull the trigger, they better be sure they have someone better in mind who is going to take the job. This should not have to be a situation like Fordham and a national search.

As per Zagsblog, Lavin expected to extend and Lavin says CO and Jordan has pretty good chance of returning.

"In other words, I wouldn’t be surprised if everyone doesn’t return. You never know, someone might transfer…I think it’s a pretty good chance if everyone returns, but it wouldn’t shock me if someone (left).”

Huh?

Lavin was quoted that you can't compare us to Duke and Kentucky. He said it's more fair to compare his performance with other programs who made similar changes during the last five years.

Lavin said, "Compared to the coaches who came in during then last five years, we did it, they didn't."

My problem is that I believe Lavin knowingly sabotaged last year's recruiting class/efforts to secure an extension.

And in doing so, he set the program back 2 years.

If he had no desire to recruit in the summer of 2013 through winter 2014, who is to say giving him the security of a contract extension will "light his fire"?

I think it's too dangerous to have him "comfortable".

Rico Hines and Gene Keady do nothing. Darrick Martin was hiring a friend. These are wastes. Lavin should've broke the bank to hire the De La Salle head coach Allocco.

Our style of play is not conducive to sustained winning.

The recruiting efforts outside of Chiles is lazy and has no focus. We don't recruit kids who play a role. We recruit kids who can run and jump. No shooters. No rebounders. No size.

And Lavin has been piss poor at establishing key relationships especially in NJ.

I want him gone. Nice guy but he doesn't show the desire that works in NY. Hes a Cali guy who prefers the laid back approach in everything.

If the new President gets suckered into giving him an extension, he's waving the white flag on the basketball program.

Ignore anything being tossed about re extension until "real" decision makers reveal their intentions. Just folly to read into anything at this point.

Marillac about face would be the equivalent of the minute after the innocent verdict came in, Johnnie Cochrane joining the DA's office to go after OJ for perjury.

Tale of the Tape: Marillac versus Marillac.
