Next Coach?

@AdamZagoria: Lavin on Obekpa: "I wouldn't be surprised at all if he doesn't return to St. John's." So there you go.

well, there's the first bit of good news

If jordan goes which is possible we can be looking at one of the worst SJU teams in history.

Lavin really did a poor job recruiting and filling holes. Will be awful to wAtch next yr.

Absolutely preposterous statement.

Terrific recruiter who brought their program back.
Outook for next season?
Abysmal, given Dunn is probably gone.
Caach's name?
Ed Cooley.
Watch what you wish for.

Jack Heath — 'Better the devil you know than the devil you don't.

Not sure Providence's outlook for next season is as "abysmal" as ours. Cooley has secured three 4-star recruits for next year.

They lose Henton, Dunn DesRosiers and Harris.
Sampson is more highly rated than incoming PC recruit and Lavin isn't done.
If Obekpa plays last night and SJU wins, this thread would be closed.
You think Cooley is under heat for losing last night?
Don't let one game determine his future.
.

Is Harris definitely gone? I know he said a few months back that he was entering the draft but seems to me that Cooley could make a compelling argument for him to stay and be the star of next year's team.

McDermott was a three star recruit who happened to blossom into a NBA player.
I'll take a team of guys like him any day.

A lot of the 5 star recruits are walking hand grenades. I love Harrison but his suspension 2 years ago cost us a likely NCAA bid. Obepka and Jordan blew up on us this year. Look at the nonsense Seaton Hall went through this year. I'm not sure some of these kids are worth it.

Duke had a player this year that was raping women for two years. Duke only has 8 scholarship kids on the roster, stuff happens. You cannot be in a major conference with mid major talent and expect to make the dance. And you never know how the coach from a mid major will fare in the majors, its a big risk. We know what we get with Lavin, and if we can shake up his staff we will be fine. Kids want to play for him. Top 50 kids want to play for him, and have. We cannot say the same about Cluess, Hurley, Archie, or any other mid major coach..couple of years ago Anthony Grant was a cant miss young coach, and he was just fired. You make a mistake with a hire like that, you will wait atleast a decade before you are back

another one is Andy Enfield at USC. Clock is ticking and he may not make the cut while FGCU continues to win in weak sister conferences.

No Masiello, No Amaker, and still not quite sure about the Hurley's.

Greg Marshall, Archie Miller, or even Ben Howland, if the powers that be decides to move on from Lavin.

I agree. Howland is my first choice, followed by Marshall and Miller (who are both 1A to me). Howland is on no way a retread.

Built the Pittsburgh program. Made UCLA a top program again, which is not as easy as it sounds.

I think Howland would still be able to sell a couple of big to come here because he has done well developing them in the past. His Pitt teams always had lunch pail bigs who excelled in their roles. Plus, he will get the best of the players we already have. That alone means next season is not a lost one.

I am still nervous anout the Hurleys. Although it would make for an amusing reality show. Imagine watching how uncomfortable Thanksgiving dinner would be at the Hurleys when Bobby tries to get an explanation from dad as to why he can't get any kids from St. Anthony's to SJU.

In the end, I will support the next coach. I may even make a couple of appearances at the Garden with the kids. But I am not going to bother if things remain the same. In that case, I will just continue on my merry apathetic ways. It saved me this year.

As, Beast and I talked last night.... "You better bring in someone who can recruit nationally."

IMO, I believe Greg Marshall, Archie Miller, and Ben Howland would be able to "hit the ground running," per se', when it comes to bringing in high-caliber recruits outside of NYC.

Howland isn't a "retread," IMO. I think he somewhat got a raw deal at UCLA. Those 3 would be first on my list, with Marshall being #1, and Miller and Howland being 2A and 2B, respectively.

High-level recruits will still play for St. John's, but it's gonna take a certain type (similar to Lavin) to bring 'em here. I believe those coaches I've mentioned will be able to seize those types.

Yes, the days of thinking you win by recruiting NYC players is over...yes, go after them when they are worth it...but, recruiting NYC, in and of itself, is not a pre-req

Heard yesterday from someone I trust that Lavin will be gone and #1 Target is the son of a big time coach, Little Ricky!

Don't believe it...

I think Mike has it right. Cleuss, while not the most sexy choice would build a program around 4 year players, recruit enough to create his system and stop the nonsense of the "5 star athlete" mentality. The program can be revived with a guy who is here for the long term, implements his system and recruits to it. Cleuss has been successful on every level, and I think he would be here too.

That said, I don't have a problem with taking a run at the Hurley boys. I am not a Howland fan.

no thanks

That it marks the end for seniors LaDontae Henton, Carson Desrosiers, Ted Bancroft and Tyler Harris (most likely) only makes the loss sting deeper.

we need to hire a coach with an ugly wife.

Dennis Wolff and Jim Barron have both wanted the job in the past. Let's call them. Or maybe Norm is ready for another shot.

If they fire Crean...I'm not waiting for IU to choose between Marshall and Miller to see who is left. I'm getting Tom Crean.

I used to be high on him, but he for the most part has underperformed at IU.

Didn't Repole fly down to Gainesville to try and recruit Donovan before Lavin was hired? I believe he's turned us down twice (unofficially).

Sometimes if you ask for something enough the answer changes. Unless it's my wife.

We have a coach who will sign a 3 year extension next week. Now we need to sign Diallo! Coach K tree isn't that good so Hurley can stay at Buffalo

They should sign Lavin period

Archie Miller is 5-1 in the NCAA Tournament with Dayton - Dayton! He had his team in the Elite 8 last year and is a win tomorrow against Oklahoma from being in the Sweet 16.

Overall Record: 90-46 (.662) Win Percentage

What he's done at Dayton is nothing short of remarkable. 36-years-old. Played point guard in college which I like. We all know about his older brother. To me, this is the 'next guy.'

This thread has been by far the most entertaining! Half the names being thrown around haven't won anything worth bragging about, the other half wouldn't come back to NY. Look how poorly we have treated a popular coach just on this thread! Our coach lost his ass head coach, battled cancer, is graduating some very fine men this spring. Took us to the dance. Did the ethical thing by suspending Obekpa, gets us national exposure, has been a great catholic, and all of us are dismissing him like Norm Roberts. Before Lavin would we have been a finalist for Briscoe? Sampson? Or Diallo? Hell no!! And I remember when Norm was here how you all were just wanting to dance, well we danced! It's not Lavins fault Obekpa smokes weed.
