Next Coach?

We have a coach who will sign a 3 year extension next week. Now we need to sign Diallo! Coach K tree isn't that good so Hurley can stay at Buffalo

Do you see Hurley's roster and incoming class? They are going to win 30 games next season at SUNY BUffalo!!! We'll have no shot at him after that. He has a team that would finish top 5 in the Big East.

He just signed a 6'5 Juco from powerhouse Midland that averaged 15 ppg and shot 41% from three as a frosh there and will have three years of eligibility remaining. He signed former top 75 recruit, Torian Graham,
He loses only two seniors that combined for just over 10 ppg, but returns his best player, 6'7 240 Justin Moss (17.5, 9.2), who I believe is an eligible graduate transfer. He returns a soph guard, Shannon Evans, that played high school at prestigious Hargrave and set the single game record for threes (12). He averaged 15.4 and 4.6 and shot 39% from three. He also returns an excellent 6'3 freshman PG, Bearden, who went for 8.4 and 4.4 and had some awesome aggressive drives against WV. He also signed a couple of other JUCOs.

This thread has been by far the most entertaining! Half the names being thrown around haven't won anything worth bragging about, the other half wouldn't come back to NY. Look how poorly we have treated a popular coach just on this thread! Our coach lost his ass head coach, battled cancer, is graduating some very fine men this spring. Took us to the dance. Did the ethical thing by suspending Obekpa, gets us national exposure, has been a great catholic, and all of us are dismissing him like Norm Roberts. Before Lavin would we have been a finalist for Briscoe? Sampson? Or Diallo? Hell no!! And I remember when Norm was here how you all were just wanting to dance, well we danced! It's not Lavins fault Obekpa smokes weed.

I wouldn't know if Lavin has been a great catholic or not and he deserves credit for Sampson but being a finalist for Briscoe means squat. Diallo also means squat unless he signs. While I agree with you about suspending Obekpa, the bigger issue is that this is just more of the ongoing drama that should not be occurring. So if you want to give him credit for that you also have to take responsibility.
So from your paragraph, Sampson is a plus and I'm going to take your word for it that Lavin is a great catholic. I wonder why he went to a conservative, Christian college instead of a Catholic school, but I'll take your word for it and also assume that he is a fine human being. But he's also the head basketball coach, ceo getting paid more than POTUS and that is what we are discussing.

So if it's about being responsible for your players actions because you are CEO, and make more than the POTUS what do you say about coach K letting a kid play who was raping women for 2 years? Or Pitino for having a rapist this season? So it's all about winning right?

I agree and would lean to bringing him back based on the same arguments you made.
My concern has been the lack of depth. We go after the big names, come close, miss and then have to scramble for players who do not qualify or are not BE caliber. What would Adonnis and Thomas ment to this team; but they did not qualify and we were left short handed. We have been shorthanded for 4 years; will that change next year or beyond? I certainly hope so.

Never said anything of the sort. Ridiculous, non-argument.

No thanks I have seen enough of Coach K tree and coach K up close to know that what coach K gets away at Duke would get STJ the death penalty! Amaker at Mich got in trouble, so I don't care how well Suny Buffalo does, I don't want Dukie slime coaching at SJU

I think it is safe to say that the highest paid employees of universities with high major athletic programs, are the head coach of both the football and basketball teams. The chancellor, or president is rarely the highest paid.

I don't want Greenberg, Howland or Leonard Hamilton

why not?

They're all retreads
Greenberg didn't do a great job anywhere and has been out of coaching for years
Howland's been dumped twice and hasn't been able to land a job in a long time
Howland admitted that he was offered lower level jobs and turned them down
He thought he could "do better". Looks like he was wrong.
He also has a reputation of being a nasty S.O.B.
I saw Hamilton coach first hand at Miami. A terrible tactician. Makes Lavin look good.
Hamilton can recruit but can't coach his way out of a paper bag

Greenberg took programs (Long Beach State, VA Tech) that were trash and made them good. Agree he did not make them great. However nobody before him was able to make a damn thing out of those programs, and they fell right back into the trash after he left. Agree it is a projection about what he would do with a program that is not quite in the trash, but you can make a reasonable projection that he would coach and recruit enough to be competitive on a regular basis.

WRT to Howland, you need to check your facts. Pitt hired him from Northern Arizona. UCLA then hired him from Pitt. The only place he was fired from was UCLA. He's been out of coaching for 2 years (as opposed to somebody who was out for say, 7 years). Unlike somebody who was out for 7 years, he has has programs come calling but has waited for what he thinks is the right opportunity.

If you want to say that the end of UCLA is a blemish on his resume that's fair... but it's the only one.

I am not a huge Leonard Hamilton fan.

Mature and reasonable.

Archie Miller is 5-1 in the NCAA Tournament with Dayton - Dayton! He had his team in the Elite 8 last year and is a win tomorrow against Oklahoma from being in the Sweet 16.

Overall Record: 90-46 (.662) Win Percentage

What he's done at Dayton is nothing short of remarkable. 36-years-old. Played point guard in college which I like. We all know about his older brother. To me, this is the 'next guy.'

Agree 100% Mattc!! He's definitely the guy. He also had a couple of big men leave the team earlier this year I believe. He only has 6 scholarship players this year and he doesn't play anyone taller than 6'6 and his team will be playing tomorrow. What does that tell you??

Pretty sure at least 3 of the Duke coaching tree have their teams in the Ncaa this year.

Also pretty sure that there's more to a guy then who he played for in college.

Oh but you did you said the bigger issue is the drama, and then referenced Obekpa smoking weed, so I gave you two more examples of much worse drama but because those teams are winning their fans are hush! The 3 year extension is smart to give Lavin time to balance out the roster. Remember when he came here he had a whole bunch of schollies to give out. Now he needs to balance it out so he has guys and can focus on a couple of guys

I'd be all for Archie Miller if he'd come here--which is not a slam dunk. Also, Dayton is an excellent program with incredible fan support and a rich history. Just noting that for those that speak down about it.

It tells me he knows wha[sup]t he's doing. If we got him because we doubled his salary, he'd be gone after the first run to the sweet 16[/sup]

As president of the United States he is the highest paid government employee. However in the country his pay is paltry when compared to CEO's all over America.

Every coach we've ever had here has been able to recruit here, and that even includes Norm. Granted he couldnt land the blue chippers, but he still brought in decent talent under very tough circumstances, on a shoestring budget and with parameters on the kind of kids he was allowed to recruit. IMO getting high D1 level kids to come here is not as hard as some of you want to make it sound. In an average year we'll need to bring in 3-4 kids in order to maintain a full and balanced roster. Again not that hard IMO. Get someone in here who can coach, and let assistants do most of the recruiting. Since lou, we have had 3 terrible game coaches and 2 mediocre game coaches. Hopefully our next hire is someone who can consistantly assemble a balanced roster and put a good product on the court.

I would agree if Bobby didn't spend allot of time down here with him. Nothing worse when eating dinner and rat face and Bobby walk into the Angus Barn, I want to Hurl! Lol
