Next Coach?

Wow this thread still going? Personally as I have said if we make the tourney I think he has done the absolute minimum but I would give him an extension. The funny thing to me is people seem to have more hatred towards Lavin then the worst coach in the history of the universe. Imagine Norm would have had this much success. There would have been a vote to change Louie arena to the Norm Dome.

We are in the same boat. Three 20-win seasons in four full years as a St. John's coach. He keeps this up forget about an extension...he'll have a statue. There are several scenarios that could leave us with a better team next season after all the moaning and negativity.

There are ZERO scenarios in which we will have a better team next season.
Don't lie to the people Marillac

I could see just 1. If Jordan and Chris come back and we get Freeman who along with Sampson become impact players right away and throw in the Greek Kid or Diallo

Mj, no way can we replace 4 seniors with freshme, euro players, sorry but that's just not gonna happen.
The only good thing about next year is the new guys will get div I experience for the following year.

New coach or with Lavin, best case scenario I see is nit. NCAA and they'll be a year ahead of themselves.

I agree with the freshman angle but in this 1 case if we landed Freeman we would be starting a junior pg a frosh sg a senior center a junior pf and small forward to be determined. So we wouldn't be that young.

It's a long shot but it's possible we could be good if all the recruiting broke right

Desco,

Four weeks ago you said there was zero chance of us making the dance. You have maintained since September that there was no way this team would be better than last year. These wounds are fresh, lay off the all-or-nothing prognostications for a bit--at least until the effects of your latest failed predictions have worn off.

You're my favorite negative poster, but you at least have to give it a few weeks after getting spanked by Marillac before engaging in more predictions.

BTW, as per our bet, the shoes are still available:

I can even argue that the team shouldnt have been on the bubble at all this year, with the elite talent we have

News alert: Avon Barksdale proclaims that Steve Lavin brings in elite talent! Extend Now!

Lol! HIT would never admit that as it is not in his DNA. Fact is we lost two games because that elite talent was not on the team in two games we lost and this team, at 22 wins, would not be 1 game away from an assured NCAA bid. Fact is this team has almost zero points coming from the bench in most games yet may earn a bid. That my fickle redmen fans is credit to both the coaches and players.
You can credit Lavin w the success of the team. But the lack of bench is on him. Re . Next year if CO and Sheed return, w can be good. If not, we are the youngest team in America again, and next year will be ugly. Time will tell. IMO Lavin should be evaluated at the end of the season. Taking into account NCAAs and next years roster.

We have tremendous talent. We had more talent last season with Sampson and Sanchez. I never said the talent wasn't the problem, and I thought when lavin was hired originally it would work if he had an Xs and Os coach to supplement his recruiting.

You can have be best ingredients in the world but what's the point if the chef sucks?!?!....and that's pretty much how I'll sum up the last three years of SJU baskeyball.

I've always said that Lavin is a good recruiter (when he tries) but he is s an abomination of a game coach.

The problem is he's been very lazy on the recruiting trail since signing the holy 11 class.

This where we agree. The last two years the coaches were sub par on the recruiting trail and made foolish 2 for 1 deals with Bourgault and Hooper. I would also add Felix Balamou in that category. This year the ingredients were adulterated with walk ons. Therefore, we did not have the best ingredients in my opinion. We still don't as soon as any of the first 6 pull a groin muscle, cut their finger, miss their girlfriend or attempt to kill an opposing player with an elbow.

Lav is NOT going anywhere. embrace it fellas. Also, he always gets late recruits, have faith. In Lav We Trust! Go Johnnies!!! Beat Marquette!

only new guy I could see making an immediate impact would be Diallo if he came.
That's Obekpa, Rysheed and Diallo, anyone else is a hope.

Chris, Diallo, SF?, Rysheed and Sampson, as the starting 5? That's if Diallo pops for us, if not then I'll take the conservative route, the nit.

Jarvis was the worst because of his personal character. Much better x & o, but despicable.

We judge basketball coaches much differently.

Hopefully you don't put as much faith in moral fiber when picking a surgeon. Having good character is nice in a friend or a neighbor but not necessarily in a basketball coach.

How does one measure moral fiber in a surgeon? If he is banging the nurse during surgery I would worry about selecting him to cut me open.
As for a coach, a parent is entrusting their 18 year old to them and if that coach is banging milfs after hours in Italian restaurants I would worry my kid may think it is ok to bang sorority girls when they say "no". Coaches set the culture on teams not the players. But why revisit the last 2 Jarvis years when some opinionated fans know what the future holds in recruits and wins and losses. I can swear a few of you guys wear turbans.

Edit: Just found a picture of Ricky Smith.

Would want a successful surgeon not a nice guy. I would rather have surgeon equivalent of John Calipari then say Norm.

I wouldn't fault Coach K or Cal for taking a chance on Balamou. The kid has elite NBA athleticism and, worst case, is an above average defender.

This is easy we should just have a committee of Desco, Avon (bring dad), Ricky (Marco and whatever other names you have) Otis and Law to select the next coach. Then we can expect that coach to reaches the dance every year. No more negative post by them. A win for everyone.

Felix is one of the quickest kids I've seen. Lot's of work needed with the ball

LMFAO! The only time Calipari or coach K "take a chance" with a player is when they sign a kid who was NOT a high school all American.
Felix can run and jump. Too bad he has been bad at everything else this year. If we had a bench to speak of with scoring options I doubt Felix ever gets burn.

Mike, that would make too much sense.

Now quickly run to Twitter and tell "dad" what I posted just now lol

I have to agree with 72 here that the idea of Felix bring recruited by Calipari or K is completely laughable and let's not turn this into a Felix bash.. But those coaches get to hand pick their recruits who are all basically HS all Americans.

if he could only score he could be a smaller version of Dom because he has his athleticism.

Scoring does seem to be something of a problem for Felix, doesn't it? This year he's shooting .264 for 1.3 ppg ... and that's a sizable improvement over last year, when he averaged 1.0 ppg on .143 shooting. And keep in mind that most of his shots are chippies ... blown chippies at that. In fact, he's never a attempted a 3-point shot this year or last (which I have to give him credit for). And as a defender, he seems to rack up the personal fouls at an extremely high rate. Granted, he does play hard, is always hustling, and looks he's like a good teammate, but let's be reasonable about his ability. As the late Sen. Lloyd Bentsen might have put it: "I know Dom Pointer. I've seen Dom Pointer play. And, believe me, Felix Balamou is no Dom Pointer."

I give up. Any discussion involving the coach has become unreadable.
And if Ive contributed to that, my apologies to everyone here.
But too many otherwise likeable people are being driven by emotions to say things that simply don't make sense, or are contrary to what is observable and factual.

Ive blamed coach for how he dresses and how he communicates, but the truth is I could throw all of that out the window if he recruited and coached his teams to victory on a regular basis.
I don't think he has dont that enough, and I don't see things changing for the better.
Many of you disagree. Great
But I'm tired of seeing anyone who is critical of Lavin being told that they're not a true fan or that they dont enjoy this team. I love college basketball, and this program. And I know good basketball when I see it. But Im done discussing the coach with you guys. Its not enjoyable, because far too many people are irrational, and mold their arguments to match their agenda.
President Bobby and the people he relies on will make a decision about the coach's future.

Sorry to miller the thread with my musings about coaches, but viewing the halftime show with Ben Howland must be the equivalent of watching Jenna Jamison in porn for lawmanfan.
