Next Coach?

If he isn't back, figuring out the right replacement will be tough. I know people are high on Masiello, and his teams play hard, but they couldn't crack 70 on Iona last night. That is embarrassing. Maybe his players aren't good this year, but tht MAAC is a god awful conference and I'd expect him to win that this year if he is that good of a candidate.

I think Lavin has been better lately with managing the game. Hope he shuffles right today.

1. No no no on Masiello. Seriously, this guy may be the looniest of Manhattan coaches, and that is really saying something.

2. for a program that has had one tourney visit in the last decade and a half, you now have a coach who may have three 20 win seasons out of four or five depending on how you view the recovery year. many make great arguments as to why Lav is not the guy...and this season ain't over, no guarantee they get twenty wins (though things are looking better of course), but you gotta ask...

can this simple math be ignored come contract talk time? i have no dog in this fight, though i've always said i have no problem with Lav as coach. but maybe this is the consistency that would be built over a long haul (even if there are some seasons of rebuilds from time to time)?

happy for that win today. ready to enjoy the next matchup.

and i absolutely love the competitive nature of this Big East reboot!

At halftime of DePaul game Lavin said the game was "disjointed" and no one knew what he was talking about, mostly because we all missed first half of the game. It turns out he was referencing the refs but disjointed basically describes the Lavin era. It started off great, went off the tracks and a lot hinged on this season.

This season then has been a cliff notes version of his whole tenure. We were good then terrible and now we are good again. Basically he and the team keeps you on your toes. I will never think he is a great coach, but I am easy. You get me / us into the tourney and personally you won't find me in the anti Lavin camp again. Appearance in NCAA 1 out of every 4 years is good enough for me. Like I said I am easy.

One out of every four years with a field of 68 is too low. At least 50% of the time.

There will always be a next coach at every school at some point. How old is Ricky P's oldest grandson? Or these days should I just say grandchild?

20 wins doesn't mean what it used to mean.

You do realize that right?

It does when we usually only win 15-16 games a year. ;)

Listening to the time out "listen ins" I think Lavin is learning how to coach. He seems to be saying the right things. Today he even called a momentum changing time out when he should. Boeheim calls them the second he sees the momentum changing. Lavs did it today when he saw the X's starting to make a comeback near the end of the game. I hope he has learned from the 'Cuse coach. As much as I hate him (coach B ),he is smart and knows what he is doing.

Lavin coaching has improved the last few games. Let's hope it continues.

Of course I do Moose.

But...

20 wins does count for a program that is highly overrated on this board. I've been following this team for a good enough while to appreciate 20 win teams no matter the era, conference, etc. It means we're playing meaningful games late in the year at the very least.

To some, this may feel like lowering the bar, I know, but in reality, this program has been the pits for a long time, and a small step above Depaul. I don't say these things to be snotty, but selection sunday has been a day of mourning just about every year this century.

I just think that it could hurt to give up on a coach with three twenty win seasons out of five...I'll take six of those a decade and even if he hits the tourney 40 percent of the time, again...this program has been to one dance since these seniors were in like the 3rd grade. And the hopeful side is that moderate success can be built upon, where recruiting becomes less of a roller coaster if the right reputation were to develop (and we'll have good spokesmen for the program moving forward in DLo, Dom, etc.) and in general, we're just part of the conversation on the regular again with a coach who isn't dropping his pants in locker rooms or arranging payments to duds on the bench, etc.

Maybe not being alumni, I'm not as attached as some of you guys. But all things considered, these past five years have been more fun as a fan and even hope that gets dynamited is better than none at all?

Peace

I said years ago this team could win 20 games a year for 10 straight years and people will find something to complain about. As 20 wins is no longer what it used to be that number might have to be 22 or 23 now.

20 is a nice number for sure. Especially based on the past however many years of mediocrity. But based on how much he makes you can get very similar results with a coach who doesn't cost as much. So when it comes to extending him at his current salary even if he makes tournament this year IMO he hasn't earned an extension especially paying him more money.

The next coach will be long time assistant to Lavin and current poster, Jack Williams in 2034. Lavin will announce a two-year timetable for relinquishing controls to Jack, and Jack will inherit a program that has made the tournament ten out of the last twelve seasons. Lavin will retire with a Final Four and two Elite Eights--but more importantly as a fan favorite.

After leading St. Joh's to an Elite Eight appearance his first season, Jack will have instant Brad Stevens appeal, and Marco Baldi's 15 year old son, under his handle of SJUandIonaHoops will start several threads about rumors he heard from his old man about Jack leaving for for an NBA job and his players talking about mass transfers if he does.

Marillac's son, Connor, will be finishing his senior season for the Johnnies as the starting PG.

Connor better be pass first or this board is going to give him a hell of a time.
