New York Mets 2025 Season

It’s crazy the pitching depth this year.
Unbelievable that McGill with his best year as a met- 3.76 era over 13 starts
might be sent down to make room for montas or Manea!
Could be an opportunity to get some pitchers rest. Piggy-back a few of these guys like Megill off of Montas and Manaea when they get back and then Clay Holmes and Senga to keep those arms fresh for the playoffs. The latter pair is stacking a lot of innings after very few in 2024. Holmes has already pitched 10 more innings than he did in 2024. Holmes and Senga should be getting 5-6 days rest every start the rest of the way and a few games should be 3-4 inning expectations.

The bullpen has also been taxed this first half. That should help them as well.

I wonder how they handle Holmes. He's already at his career-high in IP and its June 12th. It seems inevitable he will be in the bullpen come October, but who knows.

What's exciting about our hitting is that a lot of our guys are also underperforming their analytics, which means we're due for more hits to come our way (e.g. look at Soto getting that double two days ago). The pitching may regress a little bit, but great timing for reinforcements to come through.

The other day, it was Ron or Gary, who spoke about this.

They mentioned that the Mets have “no restrictions” BUT they monitor the players (pitchers) strength vis some kind of physical testing. They feel Holmes is a strong guy but he is being “monitored” like all their pitchers and they will react based on these metrics and adjust accordingly. Sounds like they have a plan at least.

Also think if Canning has to be sent to the bullpen, it's an easy piggyback opportunity to preserve some strength/innings.

Yes. Would be such a difficult conversation with Canning. I mean the guy has far exceeded my wildest dreams already even with a couple of so so starts. Good problem to have though. Crazy how good and steady this staff has been.

My guess is that they had him earmarked for around 130 innings. His rest splits are pretty clear so far. On 4 days of rest (1 start) he has a 6.00 ERA, on 5 days of rest (10 starts) he has a 2.70 ERA and on 6+(2 starts) he has a 2.53. Not big sample sizes for the extremes, but indicates he could be a guy that is okay skipping a start here and there.

Some other franchises like TB will limit starters to 3 innings occasionally to manage innings. I'd rather he skip 4-5 starts and get limited innings in a handful of others than lose him as a starter in the playoffs. As strong as he is, I don't think you want to risk him throwing 160 innings out of the gate as a starter.
