NCAA Tournament seeding

I think we , as fans here , have to remember we have Rick Pitino as our Coach .

While Self and Calipari are elite Cosches too , they have been blessed with getting top talent , merely on the reputation of their respective schools , Kansas and Kentucky .

Despite getting that talent , they have had only modest success in winning NCAA titles .

Pitino has proven again and again , he can win without the McD All Americans .

Nobody is a better Coach than Rick .

I think that's a bit of an overblown urban myth. I once asked a then-popular/connected basketball community years ago about it just to see if anyone could provide some actual supporting facts rather than just the usual "BECAUSE THEY HATE EACH OTHER!" jargon, and there wasn't one. Not one person could point to something or cite an actual event that triggered this supposed hatred.

Personally, I think they're competitive rivals on the court and they love to beat each other, but that's as far as it goes. You can always tell when two coaches don't like each other by simply watching the post-game handshake. When they do the blow-by dead-fish it's pretty obvious. Any time Pitino and Calipari have shook hands, they always stop and pay each other respect and congratulate the winner and praise each other in the press conference. They've done sit-down interviews together where they get along just fine. I also remember when Rick told a story about him calling John to tell him they were having Mass for his mother who had passed away. You don't do that for people you hate.
There is a show on YouTube about the beef. Includes Calipari ( then an assistant at Pitt) allegedly telling a Recruit that Lou Carnesseca was dying of cancer. Not sure if it’s an overblown beef but …you can watch the long history of the two. It is interesting.

thanks to chatGPT, I give you pitinos second round record analysis as a favorite:

Determining Rick Pitino’s exact second-round record as a favorite in the NCAA Tournament requires analyzing each of his tournament appearances, focusing on instances where his team was seeded higher than their opponent in the Round of 32. Here’s a breakdown:

Providence College (1985–1987):

• 1987: As a No. 6 seed, Providence defeated No. 11 seed UAB in the first round and then faced No. 3 seed Alabama in the second round. Providence won this game, but they were the lower seed, thus not the favorite.

University of Kentucky (1989–1997):

• 1992: No. 2 seed Kentucky defeated No. 15 seed Old Dominion in the first round and then faced No. 10 seed Iowa State in the second round, winning as the higher seed (favorite).

• 1993: No. 1 seed Kentucky defeated No. 16 seed Rider and then won against No. 9 seed Utah in the second round as the favorite.

• 1994: No. 3 seed Kentucky defeated No. 14 seed Tennessee State but lost to No. 6 seed Marquette in the second round, where they were the favorite.

• 1995: No. 1 seed Kentucky won against No. 16 seed Mount St. Mary’s and then defeated No. 9 seed Tulane in the second round as the favorite.

• 1996: No. 1 seed Kentucky defeated No. 16 seed San Jose State and then won against No. 9 seed Virginia Tech in the second round as the favorite.

• 1997: No. 1 seed Kentucky defeated No. 16 seed Montana and then won against No. 9 seed Iowa in the second round as the favorite.

University of Louisville (2001–2017):

• 2003: No. 4 seed Louisville defeated No. 13 seed Austin Peay but lost to No. 5 seed Butler in the second round, where they were the favorite.

• 2005: No. 4 seed Louisville defeated No. 13 seed Louisiana-Lafayette and then won against No. 5 seed Georgia Tech in the second round as the favorite.

• 2008: No. 3 seed Louisville defeated No. 14 seed Boise State and then won against No. 6 seed Oklahoma in the second round as the favorite.

• 2009: No. 1 seed Louisville defeated No. 16 seed Morehead State and then won against No. 9 seed Siena in the second round as the favorite.

• 2012: No. 4 seed Louisville defeated No. 13 seed Davidson and then won against No. 5 seed New Mexico in the second round as the favorite.

• 2013: No. 1 seed Louisville defeated No. 16 seed North Carolina A&T and then won against No. 8 seed Colorado State in the second round as the favorite.

• 2014: No. 4 seed Louisville defeated No. 13 seed Manhattan and then won against No. 5 seed Saint Louis in the second round as the favorite.

• 2015: No. 4 seed Louisville defeated No. 13 seed UC Irvine and then won against No. 5 seed Northern Iowa in the second round as the favorite.

• 2017: No. 2 seed Louisville defeated No. 15 seed Jacksonville State but lost to No. 7 seed Michigan in the second round, where they were the favorite.

Iona College (2020–2023):

• 2021: No. 15 seed Iona lost to No. 2 seed Alabama in the first round.

• 2023: No. 13 seed Iona lost to No. 4 seed UConn in the first round.

St. John’s University (2023–Present):

• 2025: As a No. 2 seed, St. John’s is scheduled to face No. 15 seed Omaha in the first round. If they advance, they will likely be the favorite in the second round.

Summary of Second-Round Games as a Favorite:

• Wins: 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 (12 wins)

• Losses: 1994, 2003, 2017 (3 losses)

Overall Second-Round Record as a Favorite: 12-3

Therefore, Rick Pitino’s record in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, when his team was the higher seed and thus the favorite, stands at 12 wins and 3 losses.
Pitino's Providence team actually beat Alabama in the Sweet 16.

BS, there's nothing overblown that beef.

Cal made it personal saying some bull crap to recruits that the man was dying.

Lucky Looie was a nice guy, I wouldn't have said anything but when we played each other, tell my lead assistant to be ready to coach the game. I'd give him an open slap, and let him know that if he ever talks that crap again, he'll be in the hospital.

Most things you gotta let slide, violence is never good, but talking about someone dying? You can't ever let that slide, then you take whatever consequences comes your way.

Bobby Martin from Atlantic City was player Looie and Cal (as Pitt AC) were recruiting when this occurred. Looie in heaven, Cal with a lot of work to do to get there. 😇

This can sound contradictory, but I think STJ should either double Dickinson and dare one of their underachieving guys to shoot it, or just let him get his points 1x1. No reason for Zuby to be overly aggressive, especially in the first 30 minutes of the game. Let him get his, he'll find his way into turnovers/foul trouble/get tired down the line.

For this entire tournament, I will forever be nervous of Aaron Scott foul trouble.

I don’t like the idea of doubling Dickinson. He’s an elite passer.

A previous poster suggested it was overblown. I simply was providing some of the information with details. That story with Louie goes back a long way and I always thought Cal was not my type of Coach. He’s not for everyone.

Now to be fair Pitino has denied the existence of a beef. I say actions speak louder than words plus I love RP but as we have learned don’t believe everything he says.

True.

Atleast Rick never said another man was dying so he could lure recruit.

That's low class by Cal.

That was not the reason Martin didn’t come here but it was definitely said.
