NCAA Tournament 2022

Per Pete Thamel

North Carolina and Duke have met 257 times. They’ve combined for 258 NCAA Tournament wins. In a rivalry that stretches back a century, they’ve never played in the NCAA Tournament. Until Saturday.

I found that fact to be hard to believe and maybe a reflection of the NCAA's desire to protect each of these "favored sons" and not have them face each other till the end (when in fact neither ever made it to that point as of yet).

Well, before the superconferences took over in the late-2000s, you couldn't meet a conference opponent until the Elite Eight, and it was rare when that happened.

It's also only the second time that Duke and Carolina have both made the Final Four in the same year (1991 was the other - Duke, of course, beat us in the Elite Eight to get there).

Former SH and NBA player Adrian Griffin,  has a daughter (UConn) and son (Duke) in Final Four action, very talented family including another son who played with Illini & then Cuse a few seasons back.

I guess we are not the only school to strikeout with a legacy recruit.

I saw Aubrey Griffin play in the Federation Semifinals the year Ponds and Dunn won the State title with Jefferson. She was an unbelievable talent as a Freshman but has suffered numerous injuries and has not played this season. Hopefully she can return and be a big part of next year's team. AJ Griffin is a lottery pick at Duke who played at Stepinac  as a Freshman with his brother, RJ Davis and Soriano at the same time a few years ago. That team won the state title as well I belief. That is a very talented family.

Also, in the first 30 plus years of the NCAA Tournament, if you were in a conference, only the winner of the conference tournament or the regular season champions if you didn’t have a tournament at the end of the season, made the NCAAs.
