(NCAA-Game 1, Dayton) - Arizona St., Wed. Mar. 20, 9:10 pm, TruTV / 970 AM

Nate Oats phone interview on ESPN noting that not knowing the opponents makes it harder to prep and will have his staff try to see if there are similarities in Johnnies & ASU that can get started on.

I literally wouldn't be surprised if we lost by double digits or won by double digits in this game. I hope they actually show up to play Wednesday night unlike last Thursday.

If Mullin can win these next two in a row vs the two most likely coaches to replace him....he might buy himself an extention.

This is a two game tournament for next head coach of St. John's. If we lose to either Hurley or Oats, then they become our next coach. If Mullin wins both, he gets extended.

(just kidding of course)

Think this should be a pretty good match up for us. They don’t play anybody much taller then 6-8.

That said, their rebounding stats are good and they have a high scoring offense. Turn the ball over a lot.

Gotta ratchet up the D and hit the boards.

MLK and MJM. I just texted by buddies. I had a dream in an hour. If we get past Dayton bet Johnnies next game !!!

Glad to have made it...but still really disappointed we couldn't bring any real big men here. Even with Olujabi and one other real big, we would've been picked as a darkhorse Sweet 16 contender. ASU and Buffalo are good teams but neither are world beaters and can be had. Texas Tech is a real good team but they lost to a horrid WVU team. If Culver is cold, they can be had.

Not being negative, just thinking what could have been. Imagine this team with Mussini, Owens, and Olujabi added to the equation. I hope this wakes Mullin up if he plans on staying, because now he knows you need real big men to really compete in college.

Nate Oats also honestly said, that he thinks they will have an advantage over the play-in winner because of playing the very next day, they might be tired out.

Yes, but Nova wasn't tired in the BET. Neither was PC or SHU. It only seems to pertain to us is my point. We can win both games...the question is how bad do they want it? Nate Oats routinely motivates Buffalo by telling them if they want to win games they have to take it from the other team. That needs to be our mindset as well.

There is a day in between games, Wednesday and Friday.
hope it ends up on the radio for those that don't get TruTV.
According to the schedule page on the athletics website, 970 AM radio for the game.

PC lost and in the last ten minutes the announcers were mentioning how they appeared worn out. Neither Nova or SHU played an extra game so I don't know what they have to do with it. The idea that having to play an extra game is a disadvantage isn't controversial. The key, whether it's the BE tourney or the NCAA tourney is not to put yourself in that position. But that ship has sailed, the team will need to overcome it as it is what it is. Not crying for them, there was plenty of chances during the end of the regular season to make sure this didn't occur - in BOTH tournaments. But it is a handicap.

It's definitely not an advantage but it's not a death knell either if you are a motivated team. They'd get a whole day of rest in between. Not like they play 2 games in 6 hours. Just calling out what I see as an excuse already being made IMO. Our game vs. ASU is a toss up. Let's focus on that for now.

Unfortunately I don't see us winning this game, mainly because Arizona State is a great rebounding team, and those types gave us trouble this year. For perspective though we did beat some good rebounding teams, here are national rankings for rebounding this year:

Bowling Green - 4
Arizona State - 13
Georgetown - 18
Rutgers - 24
Marquette - 45
DePaul - 71
St John's - 309

We're one spot below Virignia Tech if that means anything.

As usually, all that's going to matter is it we're hitting our 3 pointers.
Time to see really how good a coach St. Jean actually is.
He was just activated do to a little known NCAA rule that gives him 5 more games of eligibility.

Please stop this junk.

We can win this game. Arizona state may be able to rebound but they are also in the play in game for a reason. A flawed team just like us.

Attack the basket, get Cheatham in foul trouble. Don’t rely heavily on threes. Play solid defense. We can do this

I think we've all gotten lost in the simplistic realities. Not making our shots, not rebounds, teams packing it in, etc.

Here's what I would say strategically:

1. you beat a good zone with great ball movement and not standing around and dribbling. Motion and overloading allows opportunities to find seams in the zone and opportunities to get good looks on midrange and short jumpers. We sometimes play like it's either a 24 foot shot over the zone, or a forced layup. The old rules rules of physics apply. The ball moves faster than the zone. Good crisp ball movement, flashing to open spots on the floor will get us better looks.

2. Rebounding. With our athleticism we can be a much better rebounding team, but not rely only on athleticism. The solid fundamental of finding your man and putting a body on him when the ball goes up works about as well as a 40 inch vertical leap. Our guys should try it.

3. Transition. We should push the ball at every single opportunity, even in bounding after a basket. USe our inferior bench to give short blows to our guys to keep them fresh without having 2 or 3 bench players on the floor at once.

4. Breaks. Just because we push the ball doesn't mean every possession has to be 5 seconds and very few breaks should result in an open 25 foot shot. A 5 on 4 is an advantage, but less so of course than a 3 on 1. Our guys have to be smart in transition, and use it to wear down bigger, slwer opponents.

5. Dumb fouls. Most important thing is not committing rebounding fouls, fouls away from the basket, or fould when you've hopelessly lost your man and challenge him late. It's much more important that our starters have the capacity to be on the floor for 32-40 minutes than be on the bench saddled with fouls.

We do these things and suddenly we are formidable and not an easy out whatsoever.
