NCAA corruption case poised to take down Hall of Fame coaches, top programs

Dear Theo,

I merged the thread into an existing thread which was started yesterday.
As TIS correctly said, does this really deserve a thread of its own?
Lastly, I will take the opportunity to remind you and anyone else, though the site has been excellent as of late, that the purpose of the site is to support St. Johns athletics and not to disparage it. Your post served no purpose other than to disparage our athletic department.

Geech, never thought I’d say it, but St. John’s should catch up to the NCAA on food for Div 1 athletes. Food and snacks should always be available for these guys. This must be addressed ASAP.
except Trimble.
If we had a real problem with feeding players in the off season Adonis DeLarosa would have been an All American and first round pick.:p

Think there is a solution to this problem but it’s sure as heck not an easy one. I equate it on a larger scale to wedding invitations.

The more you open it up to people, the more problems you come across with seating, costs, logistics etc. I know this very well since I was CC’d on emails that I never read between my wife and wedding planner.

So you open up some benefits to the basketball players, fine. But what about the poor badminton freshman whose weight dropped from 98 pounds to 88 at school because he hasn’t a dime to eat?

Again there is a solution but I think it will have to be exceedingly thorough to fully solve the problem.

Adonis took up two schollies

It seems to me that at a major college sport program, there would be a team manager assigned to take care of your players regardless of where they live. If they are hungry, they should be fed PERIOD. We brought them here we should take care of them. Cost should be factored into your program under cost of doing business. As an alum, I find this embarrassing.

We already get enough negative press...the last thing we need is for our players themselves to tweet this stuff out. If I'm head of the program, I meet with the players and ensure there's a point person to assist with this stuff if they have concerns instead of allowing the issues to fester and manifest themselves in tweets that recruits can see.

On another note still technically related to the NCAA probe, Drake's new album Scorpion (came out a few weeks ago) has a song in which Drake says he took Rick Pitino to strip clubs. Hopefully the NCAA and FBI have some Drake fans!

This might be a dumb question due to NCAA guidelines, but if this situation is truly this dire, can a bunch of us get together and deliver these kids a care package of food?

Was wondering the same. If so, I'd love to help.

It would be 100% be a violation.

I wonder if it's because it's summer time and no place is open on campus? I imagine part of it is these kids don't have any spending money. I remember my brother not being allowed to have a job while being a college athlete under NCAA rules.

D1 athletes have full time jobs during the offseason: training for, conditioning and practicing their respective sports.

I am wondering if we are making mountains our of the proverbial molehills?
College kids not getting enough to eat, really?
However
If in fact there is a practical issue with the kids eating - and having access to sufficient victuals - can some poster here with ties to the staff or school get the word out AND let the rest of we posters know what solution is being taken?
Thanks - SS&G

I knew plenty of D1 athletes and they spend the summer earning and much as they could for spending money during the season.

Regardless of it it's being blown out of proportion or not, we live in a world where perception is everything. Context doesn't matter either. There's obviously ways major programs handle this kind of thing without making violations. Hopefully we figure it out.

You can help by reminding 21 year old men with a stipend to fill their freezer with Hungry Man frozen dinners instead of complaining on social media making themselves, the coaches and the school look bad.

Not to mention that there are plenty of alumni willing to hire athletes for paid summer internships in NYC

It is not like that anymore. Summer school, workouts, and pickup games is what our ballplayers do during the summer now.
