Mussini Gone

We can't start owens, he's our only capable big man.

No, you wouldn't want to start your only capable big man. Short sighted of Mullin not to recruit an incapable big man to be the starter.

LOL
But I bet he doesn't start.

I still think Yakwe starts over Owens and I expect to see the combination of Wilson, Clark and Amhed play together up front for scoring and speed. Unfortunately, we may be one incapable big man away from being a top 5 Big East team. ;)

Losing your best shooter is never a good thing.

He had value off the bench as a zone buster. You can never have too many shooters.

Was he BE starter quality? No. But he was a fine bench player.

Yeah that was mean. But considering where they were a month ago it's a nice problem to have, not having to start - or being able to not start - your best big man.

Ponds Lovett Ahmed and two of Simon, Clark and Yakwe start. Owens is good energy off the bench and Wilson gets thrown in the fire. That's eight, Aligowitz is nine, to the extent that nine matters. They have a couple of guys in the fold for next year already, it's almost as if they know what they're doing. Despite all the energy I expended trashing him I'm not happy that Mussini is leaving - no really - but I'm not crushed either. He was the eighth man on a 14 win team. If they didn't stink his being recruited over wouldn't rate a mention and in fact would be seen as a positive. Buona fortuna.

He had value off the bench as a zone buster.

A zone buster who never actually busted a zone.

Year 1 -Syracuse at MSG. Monte's Avitar is the proof.

I stand corrected. A zone buster who busted a zone once in two years of play in a meaningless preseason game. Avery Patterson did that too as I recall. I miss him.

That turned out to be our biggest game of the year unless you can find a bigger one in our 1-17 conference season. Since you labeled it a meaningless "preseason" game I imagine only conference games are meaningful to you so that leaves as your choice the big win over DePaul who we beat out to finish in last place. It's been great beating the Cuse 3 straight years and wish we were going to continue to play them as we owe them several more beatings.

Honestly, who cares. Oh well. This won't have much of an effect on us.

I respectfully disagree. I am told by one very closely related to the St.John's program that Mussini brought a sense of maturity and focus to the practices which rubbed off on other players. Yeah, Mussini would not have started but maturity and focus is something that cannot be easily replaced.

And being the fourth guard in a three-guard offense isn't a meaningless role.

Once again I disagree with the three guard offense. Have to start Owens, Clark, Ahmed, Ponds and Lovell. Simon comes off the bench as the sixth man. Have to believe against a zone Mussini would have been first sub in. This is not saying Mullin won't use a three guard offense against a smaller team.

We can't start owens, he's our only capable big man. The only way I could see Owens starting is if Yakwe improves 3x of what he was last year. You have to believe Mullin knows this.

I see Lovett, Ponds, Clark (Defensive demon, something that we really need.), Ahmed, and Clark as our starting 5.
I too would love to have two Clarks on the team but since we only have one you will have to pick another starter. ;)

I an disappointed that Mussini is leaving and at the start of his Freshman year I felt he was more of a Division 2 player regardless of his position. He was much improved last season not only in shooting but in ball handling.

One of Norm's teams beat a ranked NC State team in antediluvian times at the Garden. That turned out to be "our biggest win of the year" and I since I can't be arsed to look up who the leading scorer was in that game what's your point, oh that's right, you don't have one.

Knew you would just have to come back at me because you are oh so mature. Can never let a post that quotes you just be without a retort. I guess my point is I guess you just don't care about beating Syracuse. Let's see if you can put your big boy pants on and know when to just let things drop for once in your life.

Thanks for the memory....Feels like yesterday.

Daryll Hill had 19 points for the Red Storm and was selected the tournament's MVP, while Eugene Lawrence had 10 points and seven rebounds as St. John's Upset No. 17 NC State, 63-45 in the Holiday Tournament.

I will really miss Mussini. Federico was a pleasure to watch play for us. He was recruited by Gonzaga and could have easily been a role player there on a team that went to the NCAA Championship game last season. Instead he decided to come here. It is unusual to have a player choose us these days over a program like Gonzaga that is a perennial winner.

During his time here he always played hard, had a real fire for the game, consistently pulled for his teammates, shot better than 85% from the line and this past season shot a team high 42% from three. I am sure he would have continued to contribute if he decided to stay but has chosen to pursue another path. I wish him nothing but the best, thank him for his career here and hope that he feels good about his time in New York.

Best thing about that game was our undermanned team, shutting down Julius Hodge completely for a half after he'd publicly been talking smack about St John's then he continued to talk smack after being totally embarrassed exposing himself as not just losing the game but a complete package loser...

Federico, arrivederci paisano!

And grazie for this opportunity to use the three words of Italian I know that are not food related. :silly:

I won't miss him until one of the good guards get injured but I wish him the best of luck. Hopefully he'll work his way up the roster to get to play against Norvel Pelle one day. ;)

you're certainly getting a lot of mileage out of your other post. ;) :)
