While it pains me to say it, but this was a game where Alibegovic needed to get some minutes. Owens just doesn't have the strength or body to compete with Delgado....and it showed.
I know I keep talking about match ups and catching hell on this board, but you are 100% right. AA should have played and he should have sat in the middle of the paint and hacked AD and Ish every time they had the ball inside 10 feet. Seton Hall can't hit 3's or FTs.

We can't defend 3's, so we should have just let AA and KY hack away under there. Every other team in the big east figured it out. Don't know why we couldn't.

I feel bad for the kids. They have to be exhausted. Their coach left scholarships on the table and for some reason can't coax any basketball out of AA or KY. You would think by now we would have at least tried something new.

U said after the Duke win I wibr ca=cimolain and I wont. That being said you walk out today and you dont feel good

No Yakwe should 've gotten some burn. He would've banged with Delgado not stood outside the circle and Chuck 3's. But for whatever reason he is in Mullin's doghouse. Not saying he should be a major player but 5 minutes a game to bang a little seems about right.

If Lovett had stayed it would have taken the pressure off Ponds. We had a perfect set up with him and Ponds and Simon as the third guard. We are stuck short handed
We are stuck shorthanded because our "balanced" recruiting has 3 red shirts sitting behind the bench. We are shorthanded because this staff has done zilch to create even a miniscule role for Yakwe or Alibegovic even if our starters are exhausted as was Owens today.
In effect, the staff fostered another throwaway season and we are supposed to laud them for that.
Alibegovic and Yakwe unfortunate;y are not Big East Caliber players. It's not a coincidence that we have had our best stretch of the season with them getting hardly any minutes. If they played 6 minutes between them today we lose in regulation and the game never goes to overtime. I we had Lovett and Wilson as staff thought we would , our record would be 21-8 right now.
And, to take it further, if we had Lovett, Wilson and Sima we would be 22-7. :silly:

We're not 21-7 or 22-8, or anything close to that, with this coaching staff. So disappointing.

I’m not an AA nor Yakwe fan. But I also think not giving them any minutes in how many games , is perplexing. These guys are exausted and it’s not like Trimble is a world beater.

Unfortunately! We better be careful these last couple games or we can kiss our NIT chances goodbye.
I think we gotta win the 3 last, then one in the B.E tourny, or go 2-1 and win 2 in the tourny.

Ali would foul out in less then 10minutes so mute point.

We only have two more conference games.
The difference in the game was the referees. They were either awful or paid off. There were a lot of mysterious calls against us but I will just mention one sequence. In overtime the first two baskets by set on hall were back ups to basket. First Owens is hit in the neck by an elbow and they score. No foul called. Then Owens is pushed to the floor when the shooter pushes him back, another score and no foul. Give me a break we were robbed
I go back to maybe 2 months ago when ( manhattan1 ? ) posted here about the refs in postgame reports hate Mullin. We laughed at the time but I believe it now 100% because this shit happens almost every game and it's not coincidence anymore

I would agree that SJU has not gotten their fair share of calls this big east season especially during the losing streak but that is probably due to the losers never get their share of calls mentality and SJU doesn't take the ball to the rim enough rather than a bias against Mullin.
SJU's offense is twofold:
1 Ponds Individually making plays including three pointers and when he has GREAT games SJU wins
2 All players seem to have the option of throwing up a three pointer whenever they feel it and this group is not good three point shooters other than Clark. They manage to shoot a good percentage inside the three but throw up way too many threes without attempting to get a better shot. This seems to be Mullins coaching style but it doesn't go with this roster. The big east is so well balanced and this team has stayed close so often but it is too difficult for their athleticism to make up for a five for twenty four or whatever it was taking threes Sat. and so many other games this season.

Your item #2 pretty much summarized Mullin's coaching philosophy. That may win games against lesser opponents and win some big games when every player is on fire but in most games if Shamorie Ponds is not performing at 100% only Marvin Clark has been a 3 point threat.
Mullin seems to lack even the most fundamental knowledge of coaching an inside arc offense. In the last few games there has been, other than players driving to the basket, no attempt to position any player for one post up move. Shamorie, a 6-1 guard, has better moves inside than Owens, Yakwe or Alibegovic. It is easy to blame the players but where is the development of those kids? There has been none and every player over 6'6 seems to want to move on to greener pastures because of it.
This staff is only familiar with the NBA game and coaching 3 star players with that style may look entertaining it requires better athletes and better shooters.

I think you want to be"fair" to The refs but I have watched them arguing with Mullin even before
a game. They definitely have it in for mullin. Complaints should be filed nd film reviewed. These refs shouldc be released and banned from any game with st johns even non conference

I hate all this losing to Seton Hall and Willard; being a Johnnie fan in NJ has its sore points and that is one of them. I don't hate the school (no strong feelings about the Hall) as I didn't even have them on my radar screen growing up in Brooklyn. In northern NJ you run into a bunch of alum and fans of Seton Hall. Two close losses but "Ls" nonetheless, argh.

Anyway, I am an optimistic SJU fan, so two wins to close out this season and beat our opponent in the first BET game and I'll be happy with this year overall.

Beating Duke and Nova back to back was sweet!

Always the optimistic Kingsman!:)
Yes, those wins made the season but I would trade those two wins for losses and would have been much happier with winning 8 of the 11 games we lost. We would have had 20 wins and been talking about NCAA seedings rather than winning the last 3 games to have hope for the NIT.

I wouldn’t say those 2 wins made the season. It took away some of the sting. It looked liked we turned things around and could have made a run w our remaining games. But we lost the last 2 against short handed teams and are in sole possession of last place. I hate to sound negative , but hard to feel too good about this year despite our 2 great victories. OTOH,.We are better than our record, but lost too many close games.

What really stings is that we were no better than DePaul and Georgetown this year. The league was better top to bottom but we were the beneficiary of two "me-first" characters in LoVett and Sid Wilson. Because we had to go deep into the transfer route we started the season minus 3 players to begin with. Hopefully Dixon and Keita will have been worth the wait. The Brooks defection may come back to bite us on the ass because we have nothing inside. Hard to recruit impact players when you have 3 straight losing seasons. I think a lot of people will be looking at our last 3 games to see if those 4 wins were a cruel anomaly. As far as any change in the makeup of the staff, don't hold your breath. Mullin doesn't appear to work well with others and it is hard to imagine him hiring someone with more experience who could have more influence on the players than him.
