Dear 72
I am not aware of these vultures that killed off Steve Lavin. You alone keep bringing them up , and I am not saying you are delusional , but there is no one else supporting this theory.
In my mind what killed Steve Lavin was poor player behaviour , Obekpa getting suspended a few times , Rysheed running awol, parking lot transcripts, repeated players being ineligible, etc. Year one his recruiting was great, year two his recruiting was very good , year three Rysheed who very few programs wanted, year 4 disaster , year 5 disaster, Sammy Barnes Tompkins and an ineligible Samir Daugherty. I don’t know about this sinister SJU conspiracy which for the purposes of this discussion I will accept exists. What I do know is that for the reasons I listed Lavin was rightfully let go.
And for the record I am not a what if guy.
Reality is that Jordan was ineligible and checked out of school under Lavin , not Mullin. Reality is that Obekpa could not live with Mullins rules or the rules at UNLV. He could only live with Lavin nonexistent rules. Reality is Brandon Sampson did not commit to us. Reality is there were no other rabbits Lavin was going to pull out of his hat to bring to SJU. Had Lavin coaches a sixth season I don’t know if we would have won 5 games.

Dear North,
I am not excusing Jordan's addiction to the hood or Chris smoking weed. The 5th year disaster you described we won 22 games and went to the NCAA. Yes, there was a perception that Lav could not control his players. But none robbed grocery stores like Zach Brown nor did they kill anyone. That teens that come from the inner bowels of Philly could have socialization issues or grade issues to go with their talent is not for the faint of heart. Lavin may have tried and failed with Sheed but the what if is a valid argument. Why? Because what you just stated above was inaccurate.
Lavin was fired on a Friday and Mullin was hired the following Monday. There was no search. You take issue with my conspiracy theory. Fine. But that Friday, when Lavin had a private meeting scheduled with Bobby G there was an interesting occurrence. A grown man and non student was on campus stalking Lavin. He took pictures of him that Lavin described as a creep in sheep's clothing. How did that creep know about the meeting and how did he know Lavin would be fired?
Finally, neither Sheed nor Chris left the program when Lavin was coach. Mullin met with both a couple of weeks after he was hired. As a result, neither chose to play for Mullin with Sheed not taking finals and Chris transferring in good standing in June.
Our friend Zach chronicled on March 30th that Sheed was still in school and not "checked out". That is not to say he would have returned under Lav but certainly a valid "what if". Kind of like the what if LoVett had not left, Wilson not decommitted, Zach Brown not robbing stores, etc.
FROM NY POST, March 30, 2015:
"Defensive anchor, junior Chris Obekpa — suspended for the NCAA Tournament after testing positive for marijuana — and sophomore Rysheed Jordan could both choose to go pro, though both are reportedly leaning toward returning.

Lavin’s top recruit, Louisiana four-star guard Brandon Sampson, has opened up his recruitment, but a source said Sampson is “intrigued” by the Mullin hire and wants to meet him. Another pledge, guard Sammy Barnes-Thompkins, remains committed to the school at the moment, another source said.
In February, Mullin noted the absence of local players on St. John’s roster, and hinted if he was in charge, it would be different."

IN FEBRUARY HE HINTED IF HE WERE IN CHARGE, IT WOULD BE DIFFERENT

Where are all the NYC players and will they come next year?
STAY TUNED.

There were a lot of mysterious calls against us but I will just mention one sequence. In overtime the first two baskets by set on hall were back ups to basket. First Owens is hit in the neck by an elbow and they score. No foul called. Then Owens is pushed to the floor when the shooter pushes him back, another score and no foul. Give me a break we were robbed
I go back to maybe 2 months ago when ( manhattan1 ? ) posted here about the refs in postgame reports hate Mullin. We laughed at the time but I believe it now 100% because this shit happens almost every game and it's not coincidence anymore
When all you do is curse at them and in year 3 still do not know their names the refs will have it in for you. The Majority of the big east coaches get along with these refs and it helps them get the 50-50 calls. You may not like it but I think it has been proven over and over again.
You may be right. But the refs are paid professionals and should be calling the games impartially.

Unfortunately! We better be careful these last couple games or we can kiss our NIT chances goodbye.
I think we gotta win the 3 last, then one in the B.E tourny, or go 2-1 and win 2 in the tourny.
We only have two more conference games.
Yeah, my bad.

I think we need 18W's for an NIT bid, gonna be tough, but if they want a meaningfull post season, just do it.
FWIW......thought Marvin Clarke was excellent yesterday.

19 Points
10 Rebounds
8/12 Shooting
10rebounds, wtf has that been all season?
Don’t mean to be contrary , WASJ but, my recall of Leonard Hamilton was as All Time Leader in Bunnies missed from 2 feet and under . Rowan on this team would help but, if you go that far back , you might have Mullin , rather than Ron . Heck , I wish we still had Mussini this year . And , I wish LoVett would have opted out last Spring instead of doing what he did this year.
My point was just another shooter ans someone that can get some easy baskets. Mullin and Berry would be great but we are not that far off.
Hamilton for his career averaged 12 and 6.5 on 47% shooting.Would take him every day of the week over Owens

Plus, what was the excuse when Norm was the coach? He never said anything to the refs, and I firmly believe almost all 50-50 calls went against us during that span, because the refs knew there would be no argument, if they went against us.

If these reports about Mullin and the refs are true, then he might as well go full Bobby Knight mode on them. I really believed that Knight was so intimidating to the refs, that some of them just gave him close calls, so as not to have to be bothered with his rants.

I don't disagree with you but it is how it is playing out.
