(MSG Holiday Festival) Iona, Sun. Dec. 17, 4:30p, FS1 970 AM

First of all I believe this was one of the best refereed games that the Johnnies have played in thus far.
Liked the idea that Mullin put only one player on the foul line against Iona's zone and had Owens or Yakwe float under the basket. Simon, Clark, Ahmed and Ponds all got their chance there. Each was able to take a short jumper or pass to the cutter underneath.
Hoping Lovett returns shortly. Mullin probably giving him time to recover and return to the challenging Big East schedule.

Thank God we won this game in spite of the ZERO % 3 point shooting. A loss would have empowered that troll Baldi to be even more annoying to St. John's fans!;)
Not to regurgitate what everyone else has said but a few things have to change if we are to remain an NIT contender.
First, Shamorie needs to keep shooting 3's. Just not from 30 feet!
Bashir needs to shoot 1000 free throws a day until he starts hitting at least 75%.
Get Yakwe more involved in the offense because we need to develop an inside game with our outside shooting going south.
Speaking of shooting, Mullin and Mitch Richmond better help our shooters or their supposed value may be replaced by a bitcoin.
Finally, end the show boating street ball and get serious. That message begins in the locker room before warmups.

Great to be back at MSG. Great to be back with my 114 friends and Great to have access to my Bronx Pale Ales again

Thank God we are playing defense which allows a team to win even when the offense goes south. It allows you to make runs even when you are not shooting well. I too get disgusted with some of the points we leave on the table because of the free style Mullin wants to play but it is about the defense and we are playing it well. Defense wins, offense let’s guys think box scores tell them something. Yes there is certainly room for improvement but mostly we need to keep defending the way we have been, that is the most important half of the court. Mullin and co. have convinced these guys to consistently dig in possession by possession and as long as we keep doing that we will win our share. Defense is the only constant and Mullin knows it.

Last season so many posters complained about our inability to play defense. Well so far this season we have played well defensively. Hopefully the offense gets more consistent but agree with Logen that defense can keep you in games and boost your offense.

I could be mistaken, but I believe that even though we haven't gotten into the BE season yet that this is the best straight up defensive team that we've had going back at least to the Artest days.

I always cringed when people would say that Pointer was a great on man defender. He continually wold get beat off the dribble from 25 feet out, and our feeble attempt to pick up a penetrator either led to layups or wide open looks from 3.

This team pays very good straight up man, and works hard at collapsing on a ballhandler in the paint. Terrific instincts and there are a number of strips.

Owens may be one of our very best all time shot blockers.
