More Bad News Coming?

Dean Simons has impeccable credentials Academically and has long standing ties to the University .. I don't think the next President has to be a Priest or, Alum of the school.

It would be important for him or her, to understand the importance of the school's tradition in College BB.. Having graduated from Chaminade in the 1980's, I'm sure he was aware of our Final 4 run in 1985 and the importance that had for the school.

Wonder if him being a Harvard Law Grad would lead him to consider Tommy Amaker, if/when LaVIN is gone?

Tommy and Harvard are a nice fit. I don't see that being the case here.

In any event(from Wiki): Amaker was credited for helping to restore the ethical reputation of a Michigan program which had been tarnished by scandal.[124][125] However, he was criticized in the press for being unable to take the Wolverines to the NCAA tournament in six seasons at the helm.[126] Some fans and sportswriters argued that Amaker's Michigan teams tended to underachieve and fall apart in pressure situations, particularly in conference, on the road and at the end of the regular season.[127] On March 17, 2007, Amaker was fired by the University of Michigan.[126] Amaker was paid $900,000 to buy out the remaining years on his contract.[128]

Sounds like a cross between Norm and Lavin.

I personally don't see Amaker leaving Harvard until Coach K retires and he becomes the next Duke head coach. I also think Amaker was hurt to a degree by the Michigan scandal because werent they sanctioned first year or two under him? Based on his success at SHU followed by his success at Harvard, I think he's proven to be an excellent coach, though its possible he just got lazy and had too big a head after rising so quickly to head coach of Michigan.

Additionally, I believe Amaker's wife is a professor at Harvard now so I imagine she'd have to be OK with becoming a professor here as well.

I think he did OK at SH(3 NITs and 1 NCAA in 4 years). Recruited well. He may have been hurt by the scandal at Mich, but was given plenty of time to get beyond that. No tourney appearances in 6 years is inexcusable at Mich. Just think he's more suited for the Ivy league.

Sometimes this board goes crazy. And the craziest thing I have ever heard is support for Tommy Amaker.

Here is the reasons why:

1. We already have a coach, whether you like it or not.
2. The board criticizes the coach for not getting a team full of studs to gel. Well the Hall had a top 10 preseason ranking with what bleacher reports called one of the top 21 recruiting classes in the last 20 years and they finished with 16 wins. Lavin on the other hand finished with 20.
2a. The in fighting was so intense the team actually came to physical blows. Ty Shine getting the worst of it (in a fight with Eddie Griffen).
2b. Sammy Dalembert + Eddie Griffin + Andre Barrett had more talent and basketball skills at that point in their career than Rasheed, CO, and Jakarr and it still only amounted to 16 wins.
3. The board hates FF for looking at other jobs and Lavin for being silent during these uncertain times. Amaker jumped ship to Michigan as soon as the going got tough.
4. The board thinks Lavin sullied the universities name due to the transfers and draft declaration. Amaker lower Harvard's admission standards got investigated by the Ivy League and the NCAA for recruiting oddities, not to mention having two kids dismissed for being involved in a cheating scandal.

I blindly support St. John's and will not throw my coaches or players under the bus for any reason, but the day we look to Amaker is the day I reconsider my opinion.

Great points. Let's base our decision to consider Coach Amaker on the coaching job he did when he was 36 and in his first head coaching job, and ignore the fact that he took Harvard to its first NCAA tourney in 60+ years, and not only that, but made it 3x in a row and won a game the last 2 tourneys. On top of that, let's insinuate that some of the blame for the Harvard cheating scandal which involved 125 Harvard students should be blamed on Amaker due to the 2 basketball players involved...

And before you have time to post "hey! We didn't blame Lavin for his coaching job at 36 and where did that get us!?" let me remind you that Amaker has actually COACHED since then so an improvement in the types of players he recruits and the way he handles his players actually COULD have occurred through his trials and tribulations, rather than just hoping it improved due to absence from coaching and getting older like we did with someone else...

Fwiw Amaker is one of the most well spoken guys I've heard in coaching circles. Smart guy who really has grown as a coach. Unlike our coach who pulls the 1 stunt I absolutely cannot stand in sports: when a manager/coach makes excuses after every loss. For that reason I've never liked Steve Lavin and never will. Wouldn't mind seeing Phil leave with him.

It seems clear that the players, as a group, have decided that they want nothing to do with Lavin or his staff.

And the question is, as many have been asking, why??? What is going on???? I've never seen anything like this.
Maybe during this summers European trip Lavin personally conducted bed checks in the nude! :)

@JayOn_1: Last ditch effort to try to convince Phil to stay going on

Not sure what more there is to say. He was a starter last year. No reason to think he won't be this year.

@JayOn_1: Last ditch effort to try to convince Phil to stay going on

Is it even worth it to try to get him to stay? Sounds like we are pretty much desperate and begging him to stay. If he does change his mind and come back, is his heart going to even be in at all?

I won't discount Amaker's success at Harvard if you do not discount his failure at Michigan and how Michigan's next coach brought them to a national prominence. But hey, he beats UPenn pretty regularly now.

Where is the official University statement on the current state of affairs with the basketball program?

Waiting for white smoke from Marillac Hall indicating a President has been chosen. :cheer:

I'd like to see Marillac make a video of that and post it again :)

@JayOn_1: Last ditch effort to try to convince Phil to stay going on

now that epitomizes how bad our program is.

The fact that the soap opera is being played out over Twitter, for all potential recruits and opposing coaches to see, is even worse.

Is Jayon a disgruntled ex team mgr ? pretty soon we will have no players left anyway so I guess with that his info dies but it has been pretty damn good so far

He is a height impaired thirty year old former fencing team manager. He allowed me to only use his rear view for my Avi.

@JayOn_1: Last ditch effort to try to convince Phil to stay going on

If true, that's pathetic. I'm sure Phil is fully aware of what he's giving up by transferring out. He's an adult and if he feels his future is in better hands elsewhere, then Lavin and the coaching staff should respect him and let him walk.

All this says to me is the coaching staff is fully aware of how embarrassing all of this is.

No doubt Amaker is a cerebral guy. And that's why it makes sense that he's having success with a group of cerebral kids.

He was going at it with Zach b on twitter today. I would trust him on player news but not recruiting or Lavin. He must have been tight with Rico.
