Mitch Richmond officially on board

If Mullin doesn't get Hardaway as video coordinator then this can only be looked at as a catastrophe :)

He could definitely teach our kids confidence -- Richmond was on the radio out here around the time Mullin got hired and the hosts asked him about Hardaway's recent comment that he and Richmond could beat Curry and Thompson in 2-on-2. Mitch tried to distance himself from Hardaway's boasting, though.

I'm still don't understand what kind of limitation he has in a practice. He can't work with the kids ? Don't we have Zendon helping sometimes etc ?

Is Mitch not allowed to talk to them during practice ? How is that enforced ? What if he has telepathic powers ? How can the ncaa enforce Mitch not using Jedi mind powers

So many unanswered questions. I'm not going to sleep tonight

There seem to be so many ways around it. Mitch could form an intramural team with the guys and give them pointers. He could have them over for barbecues in his backyard that by sheer coincidence has a basketball court.

Bruce Pearl tried that. Only, it wasn't a basketball court. It was a hot tub.

Those were recruits, though, which is clearly cheating. I'm merely suggesting we bend the rules 99 percent of the way to the breaking point.

There were plenty of times i saw Keady interact with players briefly during TOs. It wasn't prolonged conversations but he'd just say a few words probably about some insight about the game. Can't see Mitch not doing the same.

And the stupidity of the rule is on a level of its own. What's to stop Keady or Richmond from just yelling something out in general. Doesn't have to be standing face to face with the player. Like the NCAA has our huddle bugged. Again stupid rule, stupid restrictions. Can't be enforced.

Speaking of enforcing. Should have hired Matt Barnes

I always liked him. He threw a chair at Rico at UCLA. A-OK in my book

As a Special Assistant his job can include, Assisting the staff with team activities, planning practice, and analyzing film and developing strategy. Seems to me that there is a lot of leeway in there for interaction with the players.

Supposedly a nut, why would you choose him to screw over? Derek Fisher is dumb

Or his ex wife is incredibly hot!

They might bug our huddles now. :)

For some reason Derek Fisher reminds me of Tiki Barber; a walking contradiction.

And to keep on topic, welcome onboard Mitch!

I for one was a little surprised MR was a HOFer. I knew he was good but wasn't aware of the HOF. I guess this is because I stopped following the NBA closely after the Knicks last championship.

I thought MJ once said Ron Artest was his toughest matchup?

MR has been in the picture from Day One of Chris' hire, what took so long for this to happen?

I'm neutral on this hire, not sure his role, and not sure we get tons out of it, except Chris hires his closest buddy.

We shall see.

I thought Kobe said Artest was his toughest, but I could be wrong because I barely follow the NBA

I think he's a good hire. But I, also, don't know what his exact role is. The only question is , w his limited ability to coach players , Is he worth the money?

I actually think that in the role of special advisor, or whatever the hell you call it, i'd prefer a guy with college experience - a guy if the rules allow to do some advance scouting by travelling to opponents games, review game tape of ours and opponents, and to advise the head coach on things he may have missed in game situations. He should have a good grasp of the college game, including the abilities of guys on the rosters of everyone of our opponents. He should be able to pick on little things a coach could miss - a hitch in a guys shooting form, flattening out of a shot, failure to see the whole court while bringing the ball up. A guy like Richmond can do some of those things, but with Mullin new to the college game, the guy next to him on the bench in that role should be somewhat of an advisor to help him acclimate. Richmond might be a great coach at this level - I don't know - but I do know we now have 2 guys on the bench who never coached at this level, along with a third who never played and will likely be no help in game situations (but is a hell of a recruiter) in Matt A. Name recognition and a HOF career doesn't mean much to me unless he is going to be out there recruiting also, which I'd kind of doubt

. It's basketball, not rocket science, and you had one of the great coaches of all time in Keady and it very rarely if ever showed in any in game strategy or adjustment. No offense, but I think you overrate in game coaching big time. Players making plays make great coaches, very rarely does it work the other way except to the nonsensical talking heads on tv. Great coaches do most of their work during practice.

He is not allowed to recruit. He is allowed to bring his decades of basketball knowledge to the table on a daily basis.

Can he work with players during practice, but not games? Or neither?

Special assistant can:

The Special Assistant to Men’s Basketball Coach duties include but not limited to: analyzing men’s basketball team through practice, film and meeting outside practice and competition; scouting future opponents and provides feedback directly to head coach and staff outside of practice and competition, and provides additional counsel on all aspects of men’s basketball program outside of practice and competition
