Missing the point!

I agree mussini playing out of position this year will only help him and us in upcoming seasons. I also dont think next year will be a struggle though, I feel if we had lovett this year we would have 3-4 more wins so adding better talent in ponds, freudenberg, ahmed, and owens and lovett who have been practicing all year and a full year of experience with the guys we have I absolutely see a competitive team next year....and im not drinking any kool aid we hung with xavier twice, marquette twice and nova with our depleted squad this year.......so i really dont expect a struggle next year. Competitive, successful and I for one see us dancing in the main dance next year.

While I don't know how you quantify the idea that Lovett is worth 3 more wins I will give them to you. That gets us to 11. Ponds, Ahmed, Freudenberg and Owens would then have to be worth 10 pus more wins plus the loss of our leading scorer to make the tourney.

Also factor in the most talented upper class guy next year is someone just arriving. Elites aside, teams laden with freshmen & sophs usually have their ups & downs. Fifteen or sixteen wins is my guess, but open to a surprise. As noted, at least they will be fun to watch & set the stage for really being competitive the following season.

Lovett will be the dominant point guard in the Big East and will contend for the best point guard in the country. Forget his scoring, its his passing . Can you imagine him running towards the other basket with Ahmed on one side and Yahwe or Adkins on the other side. Forgetaboutit. Mullin will run baby run next year with the depth and athleate he will have.

Alkins is better than Adkins. :)

This team was in dire need of a pg this year (malik has helped lately) so I think the njit, incarnate word and marq games would have gone in our favor....and quite possibly a couple others? (fordham was a disaster without pg and maybe we upset xav?..not saying we would have.... although our guys will be overmatched at times due to lack of height (ponds, lovett), i think on the flipside they could be match up problems for other teams to handle also I am thinking about 20 ish wins maybe i am expecting too much but with a year for sima, yakwe, mussini, malik plus the new guys I like what I see even for next year........plus another year of experience for mullin too.......like i said of course i could be wrong but i think it will come together nicely sooner than later

People will kill me for this but at this point I'll take an improving Ellison next year over Rawle Alkins who is just going to come with too much baggage to carry

You should killed if you pick a school because you like the basketball team over a school with hotter girls!

Mussini is rail thin. That is his body type, and likely always will be. Since the point is more demanding on the body, he will wear down more quickly playing pg. Whatever weight gain happens this summer will be harder to maintain during the season. In a pinch, he can spell Lovett for short periods of time. If he gets 15-20 minutes next season, I would prefer it be at the less demanding position of 2 guard. On defense, he has issues either way. Lacks the quickness to guard a point, and lacks the strength to defend a 2. I think he would do best if his minutes are controlled, with most time at the 2 letting Lovett break down opposing defenses.

When on the court with the other small guards Mussini will play plenty on and off the ball. When nova had their best team of 4 guards you would often times have no clue as to who was playing what. This year as well, is Archi the point? Or is it Brunson? Booth? I think your making a big deal out of really not much WASJU.

And to some others, no way Mussini is worse than our 8th best player next year. NO WAY. So regardless if he starts or not he will see minutes.

You are using Nova as your example. 99% of all other teams don't play a team that resembles the cast of Time Bandits(Dated reference but was on cable yesterday). And besides Nova played a different breed of guards. Those guys though small were for the most part not slightly build like our guards are. Again evidently ST John's does not currently have a weight room. And even with having bigger guards how does that work out for them in the tourney? Or us last year for that matter?

I have to think Mussini recovers next year. He's logged a ton of minutes this year, and they've been frantic, out-of-position minutes running the point as our primary ball handler. He had a lethal shot early in the year. With Ponds or Lovett on the floor with him next year, he won't be bringing the ball up every possession, and I think he centers his chi a little bit and finds his stroke again. As someone stated earlier, Ponds and Lovett have the ability to collapse a defense. I can see him making a living on the kick-outs next year.

Man I've seen some awfully lofty expectations placed on kids that most have never seen play a minute of high school ball and no one has seen play a second of college ball. Just wondering what will happen around here if Lovett and/or Ponds turn out to be more Elijah Ingram then Kenny Anderson and don't dominate from the minute they suit up?

Patience & rational thinking not part of our RM culture Monte. :)

from what I was told by someone Lovett is going to be basically able to penetrate at will and maybe ponds too so someone like Mussini is going to thrive with players like that who can collapse the defense and kick out and I think he is going to get a ton of open looks and since he wont be as tired I think his shooting % is going to go higher.

I also could see Ellison getting time in kind of a point forward type of role

While I agree with the idea however if Lovett is playing 35 minutes and Ponds 25 that leaves 20 minutes for Mussini / Ellison

I'm expecting Ellison to get time at the 3 as well

Only clears up another 5-7 minutes.
My only point is if Ponds and Ahmed are as good as we hope / need, there is not going to be a lot of extra minutes to go around for the other guards. I personally think 15-18 minutes for Mussini is fine but don't think that is what others are thinking.
we aren't far off in the minutes for him. I was thinking 20-25.

I think Ahmed is going to get some time at the 4 too because I think I remember reading somewhere here that they were going to play Ahmed a little at the 4 this year so I can see a lineup where they really want to push the ball especially if Ellison develops and get him more minutes at the 3

2 of the current players on the team told my friends son that Lovett is already the best player on the team by far

I don't think they are that lofty. Just natural maturation of 3-4 solid guys from this year that we can expect to produce next year. Added to a top 30 player shooting up the recruiting ranks and playing more like a top 20 guy, a top juco guy, a potentially good 6 ft 9 top euro, Lovett and Owens who we don't have that much to go on. Anyone with a good handle this year would have helped us out so much. Lovett if anything has a good handle. Plus Mullin is a year wiser. I really don't think I'm expecting g all that much more than the guys who might be tempering expectations (think I saw some ppl saying 15 wins).
Not that much a difference looking for 5-6 more. A point guard this year would have helped with close to that is my thoughts. But in the end. I root for these guys like you all do. I am actually enjoying this season watching these guys develop here and there. And I hope Malik sima Mussini and yakwe all continue to develop and contribute for us over the next few years when the higher ranked players come as I appreciate they came here to start it off

I believe Rico will come back a little stronger next year. And will play plenty of minutes. Staff wants to play an up tempo style of ball. So I see Lovett, Ponds starting and both Malik and Rico getting their minutes also. Throw in the fact that Lovett and Ponds are freshman they will have a learning curve..... Foul trouble, fitness, the long season etc....... (Won't include Rawle until he's a done deal). Not too mention you could even see staff go small and run a 3 guard offense if needed.

agreed. we won't have a reason most nights to be running for the exits in 114 at the end of games :)

Eric I was speaking about the expectations and hype surrounding Lovett and Ponds, not the existing players, staff and team as a whole. We have a tendency to way overhype kids and then bitch and moan when they don't live up to the unrealistic expectations placed on them by fans who mostly rely on YouTube clips to evaluate their talent. Think about how many times the recruiting "experts" are wrong. And these are guys who do this for a living, and they watch these kids live countless times in high school. Then we've got our recruiting "experts" who, in spite of never having seen these kids play live, have determined that Lovett is already one of the best PGs in the country and that Ponds was robbed of an MCAA nomination. Oh and that Ponds, all 5'11" of him, is a sure fire big time scoring 2G.
