After watching three games I'm wondering why, in the halfcourt defensive end, we don't try a zone? Our rotation is slow and we do a horrible job of preventing dribble penetration either to the hoop or drive and kick.
For all their offensive abilities and potential, right now our three best players are not very good at guarding on the perimeter.
Mullin wouldn't know how to coach a zone if it was drawn out for him by the John Chaney himself.
I don't see how the trying zone could be any worse than the man to man that we are playing. The D can't get any worse. It needs to change if SJU ever wants to be a top 20 team
So, neither Mullin nor anybody on the staff can coach a zone defense? What do you base your statement on?
I base it on a few things.
After watching St. John's NOT play zone defense for over 50 years I will go out on a limb and say we won't any day soon.
Chris Mullin never learned to play a zone under Carnesecca and never played it in the pros.
The pros don't play zone and our staff are NBA graduates and never played for coaches named Chaney or Boeheim.
Coaching a zone is an art and coach Mullin is still painting with a starter set.
Maybe a picture of what a difference between a Boeheim zone and a Mullin zone would look like may help:
