Minnesota, Fri. Nov. 18, 9pm, BTN/570AM

Can we bring in a specialist to teach D? Limited role. Not on the bench at game time. What are the restrictions?

Alternatively, let's build a wall at the 3 point arc.

The only restrictions are common sense and a budget not decimated by a rediculous buy out. Zendon Hamilton should still be with this team to help Owens and Sima. Maybe Bill Wennington can spend a couple of weeks with his old buddy pro bono.

Alot of positives & lessons to learn when u lose a tough road game. No time to soak in the defeat. Opportunities lie ahead #Atlantis #SJUBB

The game was exciting. Let's hope for more excitement next week.

Like everyone. Worried about our D. Time will tell regarding the coaching. Would have liked a more balanced coaching staff, big man coach, experienced assistant. Simon and Clark are really going to help next year And if we are lucky Zack will be eligible. Hope to see improvement w every game. On to MSU. Ponds and Lovett make a dynamic duo. Sima made his free throws. Would have rather seen Jones on the team than Amar, need help w our inside game. Owens looked good. Ellison looked bad. Mussini was more of a decoy, guarded tight, allowing others to be open. Not as deep as we thought. Other than Owens , bench scored zero points. Will see tightening of lineup.

The bottom line here is this is a disappointing loss of a "winnable" game. I am not saying we should have but clearly we could have won this game. Minnesota is a lot like us coming off a disappointing season and trying to reestablish a winning program. We cannot accept moral victories or bs learning experience rhetoric against teams similar to us. We want to be a winner and we need to expect to win and being disappointed when we lose is part of it. A loss is a loss.

I expect CM and the staff will work on some of the things that killed us last night. Particularly, the numerous times we didn't get back on defense. I thought that was the biggest unacceptable breakdown of the night. At one point, we were outscored 21-0 on fast break points. Let's understand what happened and fix it.

The road gets tougher and I am looking forward to the rest of the season. Nothing will come easy but let's get some wins.

We can't ride the Lovett And Ponds show all year. Teams will be able to focus on them and if don't get help it's going to get really tough

I'm in my son ear this morning. We have to get more production offensively from 2 other players. Bashir and Owens have to be those options

RedStorm Nation we have a lot to be proud from Friday night game. We also have a lot to work on to reach our full potential.

A good effort from a New Team for the Johnnies. Ponds and Lovett are New. Sima and Yakwe are still learning the game, offensively and defensively, Ahmed will settle down. Minnesota has big, burly talented front court players who pushed our guys around but, Sima and Yakwe are built tall and thin. it will happen again in BE Play. Yes, our D gave up way too many fast break points and we appeared not to have a up and down court style, which was puzzling.

Ponds and Lovett pretty much got what they wanted against pretty good Minn guards. ponds might want to go to the rack more as Lovett did in the 2nd half. When you have 2 Freshman guards putting up over 50 points combined against any team, you have a chance to win a lot of games. If Ponds and Lovett play a couple or 3 seasons and we add some talented beef upfront, this team will be ready to be competitive in the BE TOP 5 teams.

Words of wisdom. I like this dads thoughts

I could be wrong but speaking to Paultzman's odd stats comment, it seems to me that pre-game analysis was that Minn. would dominate the boards which would give them an edge. My guess is that the staff emphasized rebounding leading up to this game and the kids responded. We somehow got the advantage there against a bigger, more athletic team. On the contrary they have been turnover prone vs inferior competition and we couldn't turn them over. So these are signs of a young team. With maturity you start putting those advances together for a solid game.
I know many don't respect him at all but for me moving forward I'd put Amar ahead of Ellison in the rotation with the understanding that he does NOT have the green light short of a set play, but that we need him to get up and down the floor and defend some of the bigger 3s and more athletic 4s and set screens on the other end and get some O boards/cleanup. If he gets in foul trouble get RF some minutes for the future then Ellison.

Ellison could of helped us tremendously by missing the plane to Minnesota. Couldn't believe how bad he played after looking solid in the first two. .

It's a lot easier to look solid against Bethune-Cookman & Binghamton than Minnesota

The staff will regret all year the decision to keep Amir instead of Jones. The only decent strength size big on the team is playing like Steff Curry three feet behind the arc on offense waving at the opposition as they fly by in transition.
Another noticible factor last night was Mussini's lack of contribution. It was hoped his big east play last year was bad because he was worn down but it appears he will contribute in the Dec games at CA but will be lost again come Jan. Can Ponds and LoVett play thirty nine minutes a game?

My concern is what happens when Ponds and Lovett don't score.

After watching three games I'm wondering why, in the halfcourt defensive end, we don't try a zone? Our rotation is slow and we do a horrible job of preventing dribble penetration either to the hoop or drive and kick.

For all their offensive abilities and potential, right now our three best players are not very good at guarding on the perimeter.

Mullin wouldn't know how to coach a zone if it was drawn out for him by the John Chaney himself.

So, neither Mullin nor anybody on the staff can coach a zone defense? What do you base your statement on?

I base it on a few things.
After watching St. John's NOT play zone defense for over 50 years I will go out on a limb and say we won't any day soon.
Chris Mullin never learned to play a zone under Carnesecca and never played it in the pros.
The pros don't play zone and our staff are NBA graduates and never played for coaches named Chaney or Boeheim.
Coaching a zone is an art and coach Mullin is still painting with a starter set.
Maybe a picture of what a difference between a Boeheim zone and a Mullin zone would look like may help:

It is called a loss! ;)

How many of their guys came down the middle untouched and scored easy layups. We just waved at them and didn't even take a charge.

Yesterday was a weird game in terms of how you felt when its over. Most were not expecting St Johns to win this game, so to lose by 6 is certainly not a disaster. Of course the fact that their defense was so bad was disappointing, because they scored plenty down the stretch of this game to win, but couldn't get stops to save their life. Give Minnesota credit too...Coffey is clearly a pro, and at 6'8 with NBA skills, we certainly won't be the only team to get chewed up by him. Minnesota also couldn't miss a free throw down the stretch so give them credit there too.

Ellison could of helped us tremendously by missing the plane to Minnesota. Couldn't believe how bad he played after looking solid in the first two.

Lets's not kill this team. I feel like some people who were negative going into the season are killing them for their play last night which makes no sense. If you weren't high on them entering the season then why would you expect them to be victorious in this spot last night on the road? This appears to be one of the better offensive teams St Johns has rolled out in recent memory. The defense is clearly our weakness, and I expect it will improve as the season moves along.

Good points. When you think about it, if Mussini gave us 7 points ( not asking much )last night we would have won this game.

At least wasju will have adequate material for Freudenberg, Mussini
jokes for a week or so. :)

Did not see the game so only commenting from box score - Freudenberg played 4 minutes and took no shots, Mussini was 0-3 in 19 minutes. Usually not a good situation when your point guard takes a third of your shots. Have to watch tomorrow to get a real opinion of the game, especially the D.

I'll say it over and over, while Ponds and Lovett can do it on their own, Mussini and Freudenberg need to be set up. Both appear to need picks or a guard that penetrates drawing their defense to the middle leaving them wide open for a three pointer.
