Mike Anderson - Recruiting, Coaching, Etc.

Is this the point in the thread when we start saying nice things about Mike Anderson again?

LOL! Yes, I think so. What I find ironic is how we love to read other teams' message boards and how their fans go crazy after a loss. I gotta think they probably love reading our posts here after a loss! ;-)

The problem with the progress of the players and the program is that it sometimes feels like the progress is glacial, when we want rocket speed.  We're headed in the right direction, but some of us are getting a little long in the tooth. Patience Grasshopper.

This is the correct answer.  You can see that Anderson is adding pieces to the program who are his kind of players.  Alexander and Wusu are the templates - tough, physical players.  Stanely, Traore, and Pinzon also fit that description.  So does McGriff, though he may not have the athletic upside of the others.  In the meantime he's filling in the other gaps with JUCOs, transfers, and Mullin holdovers.

I don't agree with Otis that the main problem is going to be talent, though I suppose that depends on what you think a reasonable goal is.  I see a roster full of Anderson-type kids who have a couple of years in the program being just as good as Xavier and Providence - and I also think that if SJU got to that level it would have a recruiting advantage over those programs and others.

If you think we can get to Villanova level in one easy step, then I don't think that's realistic.  The school doesn't have the money, financial support, facilities, or anything else that would allow that to happen.

Knight said it best:  patience, grasshoppers.

Prior to Yesterday's win:

Can't make adjustments, too old, too stubburn to call timeouts, doesn't know how to substitute, gave up after leaving Arkansas, only here to collect a paycheck, can't adjust to NYC lifestyle, can't bring in any talented players

After yesterday's win:

Better at coaching than Hurley, did a great job with use of players, we have some building blocks for the future, CMA looks like he's rounding this team into form for the second half of the season, we like who he is bringing in for next year

Lol a bit of exxageration obvoiusly, but I love this board

Accurately describes the trials and tribulations of being a St. John's fan. Especially for decades! LOL! :)

Remember, just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean everybody's not out to get you!

I think collectively the board is somewhat bi-polar, but not individually. I think our board falls basically in to 3 groups:
1. The pro CMA group which sings his praises after wins, and excuses his actions after losses.
2. The anti-CMA group who only show up after losses to spew thier venom
3. The group right in the middle who show up after both wins and losses, and tries to be fairly objective in thier assessments of CMA and the team.

I believe we both fall in to that 3rd group, although you may disagree about me lol

Two of the better programs in the area are OSL and LUHI.

HE has Posh and Wusu from OSL and is in the mix for three current OSL players for the 2022 class.

He has two recruits from LUHI coming in for the 2021 class.

People say he can't recruit.  He has made inroads with two of the area powerhouse programs.  What would you have him do?

Is there a program on this side of the Hudson who produce more D1 players who also do not leave NY for prep than OSL or LUHI? To me that combination is exactly the kids to target as they have not yet shown an inclination to flee the area.

Mike Anderson has landed some real good players like Posh and Champs,  We need more kids that level or better to be able to do some real damage.  I happen to think Pinzon will be a huge addition for us both offensively and defensively. He will be our other starting wing alongside Champs that will have to be guarded and is highly skilled.  I hope Traore is in the mold of Champs and is an underrated kid with a big upside.  He seems like he had a great motor.  Don't know enough about Stanley but he seems like a beast physically.  We are definitely headed in the right direction.  Just wanna add at least ok e more stud that has some shooting ability.

Said this to a fellow poster the other day. I think a lot of our options have some glaring holes in their games, and I think Pinzon can swoop in and supplant someone.

We've only seen 4 of this staff's high school recruits actually play college basketball. That seems weird but it's only been Champagnie, McGriff, Alexander and Wusu. I think they've gotten a pretty phenomenal return on that group of players and I think it's fair to say that 75% have exceeded intitial expectations. I also really thought Rutherford and Dunn were smart, neccesarry transfer additions last season.

To be fair though, the JUCO/grad-transfer haul in this season's class has underwhelmed or pehaps can most generously be described as inconsistent. We're only halfway through the season and they can certainly still turn it around but if not I do think that leaves the staff open to some criticism. Based on their performance and how much we were expecting to lean on them the only thing saving this from being an especially rough season is that Champagnie took a massive step forward and the 2 OSL guys came in ready to contribute and play minutes. The staff deserves credit for that but also criticism if this other group can't hack it (no final verdict yet and I'm still in on Cole in particular)

Yeah I think he's gonna take a bunch of time from GWill.  Pinzon is taller and a far better passer.  GWill has the ability but hasn't showed consistency and now has another significant injury.  I'm not sure how that bodes for GWill and I think Pinzon is a bit more skilled all around.  A 1-2-3 of Posh, Pinzon and Champs I think is going to be solid when Pinzon gets rolling and comfortable at this level.

Our friend JPM114 who has seen Pinzon many times told me yesterday in his opinion he will have impact out of the gate at the wing/SG spot. John also noted he could contribute at several positions, including some PG time when needed, where his pass first mentality will help. Lastly he felt Pinzon & Posh will mesh nicely. Looks like Van got us a good one, but of course we'll have to wait to see what he brings in college action.

I wonder if this, along with rumors that we are still recruiting (McPherson?), might not bode well for Mr. McGriff. Posh plus a couple of guys who can play some point might mean a difficult conversation with coach happens in near future. Of course, you might be playing with fire if that's the plan and Posh goes down with an injury.

Incremental progress

St. John's defense last three games: Allowing 66.6 points per game and holding teams to 32.3 percent shooting from deep and 43.1 percent shooting overall. Also averaging eight steals and 6 blocks per game. #sjubb

Defense a few weeks ago was giving up 80 plus a game.  Good to see it going in the right direction.

Team has looked much better defensively, that back court duo of Posh and Dunn has really been harrassing people.  Roberts, who many (including myself) counted out looks like he's starting to figure things out, especially on the defensive end.  If these guy stay healthy it's going to be an interesting 2nd half of the season.
