Midnight Madness Countdown

Just got back from Carnesecca. Thought this was the best Midnight Madness that I have attended and I've gone to the majority of them since the school started holding the event. I kill the SJU Athletic Department quite a bit and thought they were very late in marketing the event and didn't do anything for Staten Island event but must give them credit: they did a nice job with this tonight IMO. The event used to be filled with way too many activities and stunts and ppl lost interest. They seemed to cut quite a bit of that out, make it a more time efficient event and obviously they were able to draw the students into the building as it was a packed house.

As for the scrimmage you really couldn't tell much. Players were not going at full speed (probably a good thing as you don't want players getting hurt). Two things I did notice:

-Lovett and Ponds are far better ball handlers than Mussini and so in that regard you can clearly see that will be an upgrade at the lead guard position.
-Freudenberg has an eerily similar shooting form as Mullin. A lot of em went down between the drills/scrimmage. Seemed to have a rough time handling the ball in this setting. Curious to see what his role will be and how much of a "project" he'l be as he translates to the more athletic and physical American game.

Overall a really great night. Hyped for the season to begin

Freduenberg, Amar, Yakwe, and Sima... I dont care if they were playing the girls team from st johns the baptist, there hasnt been a pg at st johns in ten+ years that could make that group look like a capable offensive team. Lovett did it last night and he did it rather matter-of-factly. Exhibition or not. 5 assists on first 5 baskets. Will turn it over a lot.

Ponds plays defense like he is 5 inches taller than he actually is. Play-maker as much as a scorer I think.

Thanks to all the posters that attended and gave reports. From the highlight clip, the crowd looked pumped. Imagine getting a crowd like that for every home game? This will be an exciting team to watch. We will have more 3 point threats than ever, and more skilled ball handlers than in years. Let's surprise some people, and be in position for a big future.

Hate Ellison didn't play. Guys who get hurt tend to keep getting hurt. Any review on Bashir ?

At first glance he reminded me a little too much of Durand. Then he showed a real nice handle and a couple legitimate drives to the hoop. I hope he doesnt rely too much outside jumpers and realizes he could live in the lane and on the line.

How quickly we forget Rysheed Jordan.

That said, excited to hear the reports about Lovett and Ponds and for the season to begin.

I loved rysheed the player. He was not pure point and coudnt gel a unit together. Good passer but not a true lead guard. I actually thought he would be a good one, so I was wrong there.

If Bashir keeps working hard, he has a chance to be a Billy Goodwin type player. He can handle, has a nice mid range game, a decent shot from 3, and is very athletic. He is a great addition to the program.

Agree, that is what I said months ago. For those that are too young to know Billy he was a 6 5 forward/guard from the Bronx who started out at JC I believe in Texas. He came back to SJU and played I believe 3 seasons. For sure Coach Mullins first 2 seasons. His senior season he was 3rd team all big east and was a third round draft pick of the Knicks. Billy did everything very well nothing spectacularly and was a great asset to the team.

Excellent comparison Panther & one of my favorites! Would take that in a minute!

Would love to see Bashir pose for same victory during his tenure!

Exactly......couldn't agree more.

Hey what do you have against the St. John the Baptist girls team? :)

Highlights of the night in random order.

Shamorie Ponds dancing with Desiigner and a person dressed in a Panda suit - Brooklyn in the house
Chris Mullin and Mitch Richmond looking like they really get along
Amar - had his hair up in a pony tail and looked even stronger then ever. Played well in the scrimmage.
Marvin Clark and Justin Simon look like players
Darien Williams out on the court and dunking
Leaving early and seeing a recruit that looked like 15 and over 7' tall. Anyone know the list of big men recruits in attendance. This guy was huge. I am 6'2 and I felt like a midget.
Freudenburg's jumpshot. He is really skinny though.
Mussini looked a little quicker and I am his biggest critic
Lovett has a great handle and is strong for his size. He also can jump and shoot. Hope he doesn't try to do too much early.
Ponds stripping the ball out of everyones hands. He may look harmless but he is always watching. Also made a number of nice passes. Hope he gets more aggressive.
Wasn't a great forum for Ahmed but he will be a bull in real games.
Yawke with a lot of nice finishes but his footwork is still not good.
Sima and Owens still need to get stronger.
Wish Ellison could have played. We will need him.
The crowd was huge.
Soundsytem needs improvement.

Richmond is an assistant for no other reason than he and Mullin are tight.. Not sure why that was a bullet point?
And I am not sure it bodes well that of the guys that you pointed out as looking good, two aren't eligible and the other stinks.
Nice to know Ponds can dance though. I have often found it disconcerting that our team had no rhythm. Being a team from NYC that is unacceptable!

I 'd sign up for that
