MICHIGAN (@MSG), Mon., Nov. 13, 6:30p, FS-1

No idea how the game turns out.

However, Michigan has a fair bit of player turnover themselves. The Head Coach is recovering from a heart procedure and Phil Martelli is filling in. It’s also a pretty big jump from UNC Asheville to St. John’s.🙂

Great time for an early season test. Iron sharpens iron. Good or bad result these are the better games we want to play.
One thing for sure, our bigs will be tested. Michigan has a formidable front line with size and athleticism. They also have a dynamic PG in Dug McDaniel to get them the ball so D on him will be important as well. While not very big (5’11”), he is extremely quick and skilled and can create match up issues. At this point in time this game can go either way but I don’t see a clear favorite. As a poster said earlier, a month down the road or so with Rick’s player/team development I would lean towards the Johnnies but now it’s a tough call. Remember this team outplayed Marquette in a recent scrimmage. Of course I’ll be rooting like hell for the good guys..

No doubt about it. I caught their game last night and they blasted UNCA. Good test and opportunity for early statement. We’ll see. Opportunity knocks or it will knock us over our heads. 🙂

I hate to be pessimistic, but I don't see us taking this one at this point in our season. If this was end of November and more games under our belt, way more likely. We are jumping from Stony Brook to Michigan. Carnesecca to MSG with such a new team. I think we start slow and pick it up later. Final Score: 85-77 Michigan. Also some silly turnovers last night that cannot happen against a legit team.
Michigan lost Hunter Dickinson and TWO players to the NBA from an 18-16 team. Their coach is out and his son was just ruled out for 4-6 weeks.

Michigan is always a tough out, but they are going through it as well.

We have to dominate the offensive glass and get Dingle and Alleyne open looks.

This imo will be very competitive game. Hopefully our aggressive D, which Rick says is work in progress, will be the difference. Rick’s staffs always scout and prepare well so it should be interesting. RP on our sideline v Michigan AC on theirs is a SJU advantage.
Not disagreeing but Pitino vs. against virtually anyone with in game coaching is advantage Johnnies but Phil Martelli has been a good, well respected coach for a long time. IMO, light years better than Juwan Howard.

Full disclosure when I am not rooting for SJU I am rooting for UM. The UM alumni base (which there is a large contingency of in Manhattan) is scared to face us next week.

This UM team also is not the same team it was last year. They have lost their best player to the transfer portal and lost their 2nd and third best to the NBA and had a big incoming transfer that could not get admitted academically so the program is generally in a downswing.

Michigan has acting head coach Phil Martelli Sr. and Bryant has acting head coach Phil Martelli Jr. The dad has the coaching chops and that probably means UM is in-game coached better under him than Howard. But neither Martelli is a PITINO, so in-game coach advantage to StJ.

Let's turn out for this game because UM puts a lot of alums into NYC and they have a strong allegiance to the blue and gold. Let's make it a sea of RED and at most a smattering of Blue and Gold.

[There's a blue & gold bar downtown in the E. Village that gets packed for UM games.]

haha

definitely not deafening.

it was the typical polite cheering

but good energy overall.
Felt the same- I've heard it louder when its 1/2 to 2/3 full, at it was packed last night. Game was never tight... and only one alley-oop, which normally gets people to stand...

Rick- you have let the opponent within striking distance to hear the deafening roar...

Not breaking any hard news, but Monday will be an entirely different “vibe.”

First game of the Pitino era at the Garden will be electric. Dare I say it will be akin to Pat Riley’s first Garden game as a Knicks coach.

And I hope Michael Walczewaki, the voice of the Garden is there. Just to hear him say something to the effect, “And in his first season as coach of St. John’s, please give a raucous New York welcome to our very own Rick Pitino!”

It will send shivers.

Keep in mind that Michigan has nearly had as much turnover as us over the last 6 months. They play late Friday night and then have a full day's travel before they enter into a marquee venue. The jitters will be there for them as well. Martelli/Pitino will be very fun to watch. I like our super senior leadership and veteran staff to be ready for this. Can not wait.
