(Miami Invit) Georgia Tech, Sat. Dec. 1, 12 Noon, ESPNU / 570 WMCA

I wouldn't go so far as to call this a must win game. Even if we lose this one, we'll have plenty of chances to make up for it with big wins against the Big East portion of the schedule.

However, with our very soft out of conference schedule, a win like this is pretty essential. Neutral court against a Top 100 RPI and major conference team, who we should beat.

I'm pumped for it.

We need the win. It’s ours for the taking. It would be a big win. Right now Georgia Tech is 4-1 and near the top of the ACC. They play Northwestern tonight whomis ranked near top of the Big 10 right now. A Georgia tech win tonight would make a win over them a quality win. Going into the Duke game undefeated in OOC play would be big for us.

I agree that there is really no such thing as a must win this early in the season when we have not lost a game. However, losing this game would put tremendous pressure on us to either beat Duke at Cameron (not likely), be pretty dominant in Big East play (13-5 or better to be safe) or win BE tourney. Very big game Saturday.

Agreed. It's not a must win but it's probably the second most important game to win on the schedule after Duke. A win here all but guarantees a 12-0 start and that comes with confidence, a top 25 ranking, and a lot of momentum.

As a conference the Big East needs to pick up these wins to make up for the lack of marquee wins.

OK, it isn't a must win, but it's a gotta win.
If they lost to Ga Tech, then even if they win every other game, people will say: "Yeah, they're beating these bs cream puffs, but they lost to Ga Tech, right." That's how I'll it.

They better come hard on Saturday.

I think there's a bit of hyperbole in this thread, and the board in general. The Big East is currently #2 in all the RPI rankings. You all realize a T1 win is simply a road win vs a top 75 opponent? We don't need to beat top 10 teams to get quality wins. Our entire conference schedule, aside from possibly 1 to 3 games max (out of 18), will be either T1 or T2 games. The BE's strong performance makes the OOC SOS less of an issue.

This game, being neutral, will be a T2 (as of today) or possibly a T3 game (if GT does poorly during ACC play). The Rutgers game we just played, being away, is actually a borderline T1 game right now (they're ranked #82 in NET- close to top 75). The VCU game, being neutral, is currently a T1 win.

So, yes. As of today we currently have a T1 win and a T2 win. The GT game is currently T2 (but close to T3, which is what i anticipate it'll become).

If we lose this game we don't need to win the BET, go 13-5 and/or beat Duke. It doesn't work that way when you do the math. We'd likely make it if we go 11-2 OOC, 11-7 BE and get a BET win (23 total).

That said, this would be a HUGE win and would go a long way towards making the season a success. I want this win really badly, but this will in no way kill our season if we lose. We're doing well, and the league is doing well. Let's just enjoy it and hope for another win.

Great analysis. I just feel like avoiding this loss will go along way to taking off some of the pressure during the Big East schedule. We all know how tough the conference is, especially the road games, so it could give us another loss we could afford during the conference.

Need to win this game, we are the better team. Ponds will be the key, if he can score efficiently and create for others than we should have no issues. LJ and Heron have bought into their roles so not worried about them. Simon makes some boneheaded turnovers but he does make crucial hustle plays too. Feel like he still hasn't fully adjusted yet but if/when he does that will be huge. For some reason I feel like he played better defense last year but im not sure. Clark has been struggling but he is playing out of position and having to defend bigger guys. I have faith that he will figure it out he is a solid player. Dixon looks like he is getting more comfortable in that 6th man role and should end up one of the better bench players in the league. Trimble is solid on D but has been invisible offensively so far; if he isnt hitting 3s than he cant really score. Williams, Roberts, and Earlington got their feet wet a little and aren't there yet but at least its a start. They wont play against GT though which is understandable. Alston is shooting 63% from outside, so expect him to light us up. Interested in seeing the local kids Alvarado (CTK) and Moore (Molloy).Hopefully we win by 10+ but if its close we can always give it to slick and let him dance.

Thanks for the reminder. Sitting here watching UNC/Michigan and damned near forgot as I do want to check out GT. Must be the result of the strange feeling I had after watching Rutgers beat Miami. Hey, maybe for all the Kenpom stat nerds that is now a better win than they thought?

Georgia Tech is getting foot stomped by Northwestern right now 32-13.

Josh Pastner could be in trouble this year if they don't show some improvement.

Yeah, they have started awful. Long way to go though.

Northwestern is blowing the doors off Geogia Tech 50 to 22 four minutes into the second half.

Maybe Georgia Tech was looking past Northwestern and thinking about their big matchup on Saturday with St. John's :)

Yeah give credit to Tech they have cut this to 7 after they trailed by 28 but not sure if it will be enough.

Georgia Tech outscores Northwestern 39 to 17 over the final sixteen minutes to make it respectable losing by six 67 to 61

Alvarado makes me quite nervous. Hope he doesn't chop our defense up. This one is going to be tough...if we win especially handily then it gives us a nice little resume of beating Cal, Rutgers, GT, and VCU. 3/4 would be F5 opponents even if they aren't going to finish well in their conference. Would still look better than a mid major beating zero F5 teams.

I want to see two complete halves of playing hard with max effort with plenty of movement without the ball as well as ball movement. That's what we did at Rutgers and that was a pretty game. Would be nice to get another pretty one against a legitimate opponent. Hopefully the team realizes that LJ absolutely must get the ball more until he goes cold which has not happened yet. Ponds should be driving and not shooting 3's and I want to see Heron getting closer to the hoop instead of settling for mid-rangers unless he's wide open. Clark needs to find his shot again and Simon needs to add more arc to his floaters and layups as way too many have been bricks. Also hope to see Dixon continue his strong play of late.

This is the game we need to win if we want to have any chance at cracking the top 25 right before conference play. Then we would still obviously have to take care of the mid majors after them, but it's moot if we can't beat these guys first.
