Thoughts on this season?

I am excited for the first time in years at the beginning of a season. Obviously the Wheeler setback was devastating, and then Edgin--which actually might hurt the team more than losing Wheeler.

Starters are very solid if they can stay healthy. We've got three kids, Montero (excellent spring), Syndergaard, and Matz ready for a spot to open. Bullpen is solid, but Edgin was really good last year and losing him hurt as the lefty specialist.

Mayberry Jr. was a good addition for a lineup that couldn't touch lefty pitching. He had 5 homers and a .343 OBP against lefties last year in just 70 at bats. Duda hit just .180 against lefties with just two out of his 30 homers in 111 at bats last year. Cuddyer hit .412 v. lefties with a .486 OBP and fiver homers in 51 at bats against lefties in 2014. That platoon makes the Mets better immediately. Cuddyer's health is a concern due to his age and recent history. We'll need 140 games out of him.

Wright and Granderson need to step up...one of them will need to be playing at an all-star level.
d"Arnaud, Flores, and Lagares are all primed for big years.

I am excited as well. First let's hope Harvey stays healthy. I hope we can have a winning record and be in the hunt in September for a playoff spot. Lets not get swept again by the Nationals to open the season. Go Mets!

Marillac, let's hope that our new batting coach, Long, is responsible for their excellent offensive spring training.
BTW, nothing to do about the Mets but I've seen the Bryant kid from the Cubbies play several times in spring training here in Arizona. What a prospect and first round pick.

I will preface my comments by saying that I have been a Mets fan since 1962
They do have good young pitching
But they don't have great hitting or defense
Mayberry Jr has been a bust throughout his career
Cuddyer's numbers are skewed because he played half his games in Colorado
They are counting on older guys that regularly get hurt to perform well
I wouldn't count on Grandy, Cuddyer and Wright to make it through the season
Despite Alderson's comments, I expect less than 90 wins and Collins to be fired
I think that Collins has done a good job given the "talent" he has had to work with
But he will be the sacrificial lamb as the team gets closer to contending
The one good thing is that they should be out of contention before summer
Gives me more time to play golf

Don't need to win 90 games to be in playoff hunt; 88 usually does it.

I'm cautiously optimist. 87-75

Looking forward to going to some games this year.

But if Sandy makes some trades during mid season and gets Cespedes that can really turn things around and we can clinch the division by the time we play cincy in end of september.

I think Plawecki is the starting catcher by August. He can hit. I'm not convinced darnaud will materialize.

-No lead off hitter
-Worst middle infield in baseball?
-Wright's career plunging
-Same with Granderson
-Duda a one year wonder
-Cuddyer injury prone and inflated CO stats
-d'Arnaud still not there def or off
-Flores inflated meaningless Sept stats

But hey, we've got great pitching!

You bite your tongue! We're taking the NL East and there's no better way to send that message to your fan base than by starting Bartolo Colon on opening day over Harvey and deGrom!

Lagares reminds me of Carlos Gomez. Actually watched Gomez when he first came up and Lagares was better at this point.
15 hrs 285 BA and 25 sb's this year. Also best fielding CF in baseball

Wow, that is a negative outlook :) Middle infield is bad defensively, but the outfield is one of the better defensive OFs in the league and few teams in the national league can match the offensive production Murph and Flores will put up.

d'Arnaud started to impress me at the end of last year and Plawecki is good prospect and strong back up. Flores can hit and he'll show it this year...expecting .280+ and double-digit homers. Wright just turned 32 and seems to be healthy...I don't think the down year last season was the start of a decline as much as it was a bad season battling injuries. I could see Wright in the league 7-8 years from now if his health holds up. Granderson worries me a little more, because he's not a crafty enough hitter to make up for losing all that power.

No lead off hitter is a problem, but I'm hoping Lagares can fill in decently and draw some more walks and get more aggressive on the base paths. The staff sees him as a 30 steal guy.

Solid roster all the way down. No superstars. Good backups. Potentially great pitching if they can stay healthy. Stanton would have had a Piazza like effect for this group...they are missing that one huge bat.

And Reynolds can rake. Very impressed with him as a prospect. They should be able to put something together to get a deal a big bat at the deadline with all the amazing young pitching talent and major league ready position players at AAA.

As impressed as a I was with Reynolds watching him in person this spring, I was even more unimpressed at how weak Granderson's arm was. Good thing he's moving to left. The kid warming him up in RF at the games I was at had a MUCH stronger arm. He can't get anything on the ball.

I don't see 88 wins either
A .500 season (81-81) would be a very good result for this team

Being a Mets fan for 53 years, I sincerely hope that you are right
I have cheered for the Mets at the Polo Grounds, Shea and Citi Field
But, in my heart of hearts, I think you're a cockeyed optimist

I'm a little concerned with the bullpen. Edgin is out for the year and PArnell and Black are starting the season on the DL, Familia's velocity was down about 5 MPH this spring and Mejia to me is still a question mark in the closers role. Montero and Torres I like though Montero should probably be starting in AAA. And do we really need 3 lefty specialists? We have no bench at all

No way. This season is a failure @ .500. With Thor and Matz waiting for a chance, we are stacked. The offense should be middle of the pack but the pitching will pull us through.

Cruz may not have had a Piazza effect but certainly would have improved our power outlet. Of course the cheap owners made sure that never happened.
I wouldn't even mind giving up one of our pitchers for Tulowitski. We need a game changer like Mike Piazza was.

One of Familia's pitches last night reached 99. This kid is almost unhittable with his stuff. Looks as if Parnell becomes the setup man. When Black returns he'll take care of the 7th inning if needed.
Read an article yesterday that Milwaukee was considering trading their good hitting shortstop, Segura, for Montero. Only problem I believe Segura has 6 errors thus far. All things being equal I prefer him over Flores. Let's get the deal done.

anyone know where we can buy an offense?

this one-run per game stuff of late is ridiculous.

and while i appreciate their efforts, Cuddyer ain't amountin' to much, and neither is Grandy (despite a decent OBA).

this team may need to finally pull a trigger on a trade and unload a young pitcher to get a real bat.

How is Kirk Nieuwenhuis in the major leagues? He is a complete joker. I am also starting to get tired of Terry Collins. The team needs some fire and he is way too laid back.
