Mets Hot Stove Talk--2025-2026

Always loved John Franco and never thought he was a Hall of Famer, but if Billy Wagner got in why not Franco.
Agree. He is a good guy, who had a very good career, but falls a bit short of the HOF.

However — and forgive me for sounding sappy — but if his daughter is posting on social media about how he deserves to be in the HOF, then he already made it, as a dad. Being a great dad who is loved by his family, is the biggest blessing and recognition a man can receive.

At their best, Wagner was more dominant than Franco, but neither belong in the Hall.

Closers are tricky. I value the ones who inherit the toughest situations on the biggest stage. Those are very few because it also depends on the success of the teams they're on ie Mariano. Guys like Trevor Hoffman have had long-term dominance, but as Tony Soprano said, "He ever been put to the test?"

Wagner was by far the best closer the Mets ever had, but I always loved John Franco. (And I'm a guy that was raised on the great Tug McGraw.)

Mets eat David Stearns’ $34 million blunder. Montas is the pitching equivalent of Jedd Lowrie. Of course, that was a Van Wagenen and Wilpon disaster.

The more things change…

Last offseason, Stearns prioritized Manaea over Severino, and let Quintana walk and signed Montas. Two huge blunders.
In ‘24 all 3 pitchers had solid seasons for Mets, w manea slightly better.
Quintana oldest of 3 @ 36, and severino least effective of 3 after all star break.

I had no issue w Manea resigning, would have preferred 2 years at lower $$.
I would have liked all 3 back rather than montas & Holmes.

But severino got a big 67 mil 3 yr contract from A’s & regressed, so good to let go.
Quintana signed 2025 1 year contract w brewers for effectively 4 mil. He’s a free agent again now.
I hated the montas signing from day 1. Crazy money for pitcher w 4.84 2024 era & missed all of 2023

Steve - I agree with a lot of that. Manea was a bad signing because of the injury risk, which has been much discussed and was at the time. Severino is more durable and even in a down year outperformed Manea significantly. Manea will continue to get hurt and should probably be a reliever at this point.

I'd take Quintana and Chris Bassitt back in a minute. Both are gamers who know how to pitch. The young guys could learn a lot from both of them. Bassitt is another productive arm we let walk away (although that was before Stearns).

I don’t have a problem at all with the Manaea signing. Maybe with the way pitching is evolving (devolving?), it wasn’t wise to invest in a guy that threw the most innings of his career and 64 more innings (+ another 14 in postseason) than he did the prior season — from a new arm angle. My money is on Yamamoto getting hurt next year for same reasons.

Quintana seemed like a blatant blunder at the time and looking back now.

Was Severino really more durable though? I mean the last two years you'd say yes but the 4 years before signing he only started 44 games for they Yankees. Over the same period Manea had started 81 with 21 relief appearances. No dog in this race but as a casual baseball fan I was aware of Severino's injury history.
