Mets Hot Stove Talk--2025-2026

Was Severino really more durable though? I mean the last two years you'd say yes but the 4 years before signing he only started 44 games for they Yankees. Over the same period Manea had started 81 with 21 relief appearances. No dog in this race but as a casual baseball fan I was aware of Severino's injury history.
That's fair. I was referring to going forward, where Manea will be injury prone for the foreseeable future given his new arm angle, while Severino's mechanics are much better. All you need to know is that Manea modeled his new delivery on Chris Sale, who's hurt all the time. It's no surprise that he got hurt less than a year after making the switch.

Yuck is right
Nothing like getting rid of a contract to bring on another bad contract. On top of that he’s 2 years older than Nimmo and is clearly declining.

Hate the move in a vacuum but I’ll have to wait to see what else happens the rest of the off-season before judging. I for one am losing confidence in Stearns.

Wow!

Semein has 3 and 72 remaining. Nimmo had 5 and 102.5 left — an awful contract.

This is a huge win for the Mets. Now they can go after Tucker and/or Bellinger and trade Jett Williams in package for a #1 starter.

Also, Semein played 3 years of college, so he’s got a lot less miles than most guys his age.

The Semien contract is shorter than Nimmo but $6m more than Nimmo for 2026 and 2027. The last season of Semien is a wash with Nimmo. So the Mets just added $6m higher for the next 2 years.

The length of Nimmo’s deal is where his money was the problem.

I was down on Nimmo, but please tell me how this trade makes sense for the Mets.

The guy they got has been putrid at the plate the past two seasons.
We just shed 30 mill in payroll over the next 5 years (assuming there is no cash coming from us) and opened up the outfield to add a good defender. Semein is a very good defender…going to assume he’ll be losing a bit with age, though.

Nimmo will be a DH in a year and a half and was below average in left already.

Those two years are what made him one of the worst contracts in baseball, though. Thad is no small thing. He would be a DFA candidate by that point.

Like I said I’ll wait to see the rest of the picture. However, going into his age 35 season Semien is a player already showing serious decline. Maybe we deal him after a year or two. Don’t see this trade moving the needle one way or the other. Maybe financially long term.

But today our payroll actually increased by $6m, team got older and not really improved.

Are the Mets actively talking to the agents of any of the Japanese guys? I prefer two: Imae and Murakami. A lot of good players in Japan and it seems better to stay active in that talent pool rather than to jump in when there is special talent available..

On his worst day Nimmo was a child of God and the guy always played hard! We’ll all remember him sprinting to 1st base after drawing walks.

Seemed like a great guy but he has diminished defensively. I recall they stuck him in CF due to injuries around 2 years ago and he was horrific. You couldn’t hide him in LF much longer. The more I think about it this could lead to a Bellinger/Tucker signing along with expediting Mcneil’s departure. Sign me up for all the above so far.

Agree. He is a good guy, who had a very good career, but falls a bit short of the HOF.

However — and forgive me for sounding sappy — but if his daughter is posting on social media about how he deserves to be in the HOF, then he already made it, as a dad. Being a great dad who is loved by his family, is the biggest blessing and recognition a man can receive.
+100

Don't understand this deal. We don't get younger and we add to the glut of infielders.
Semein won a gold glove this year at an up-the-middle position. That makes us a better defensive team. If we move Soto to left field and get a big-time two-way right fielder, we become even better defensively.

We were limited with what we could be defensively with Nimmo and Soto as our corner outfielders.

Obviously, in a vacuum, this does very little to improve our chances. But it does open a world of very exciting possibilities for guys like Tucker, Tatis, and/or Bellinger.

There might not be a 2027 season.

Wonder what happens with pete, if its all about suring up the defense and saving money, he's the next below average fielder to go
