Mets Hot Stove talk--2024-25

Manea QO definitely, but 4/88 too much
Severino QO too much. 3/40 I’d do ?
I think you have to offer both. If for no other reason then making it more likely to sign them to longer deals.

If they accept, great. Sandy Alderson said there is no such thing as a bad one year deal.

Personally, the $ in sports has become completely irrelevant to me, all of that is completely and utterly up to Cohen only, it is his money. I 100% respect that, he should spend it as he wants. As far as I am concerned it doesn’t even enter into my thoughts considering the Mets moves. I just want them to stay legitimately competitive and hopefully, easy to root for, which they certainly were this year.

The Mets are not going over three years for a pitcher. They will give more annual salary. Pitchers are more brittle than ever.

With the advent of “bullpen games” starters are just extended relievers for the most part anyway.

Stearns is willing to make exceptions. They offered Yamamoto 12 years, 325 mill. But, he also just turned 26 in August. So I don't think there's any starting pitcher of both that caliber or age in free agency this year.

I think the bulk of our starters will be 1 year prove it deals or veterans signing 2-3 years. I don't want to sound like a broken record, but the depth of the minor league arms will really make us dangerous with a mind like Stearns calling the shots. Tidwell and Sproat have top of the rotation potential. Might be time to extend Peterson to a team-friendly deal as well. Buyout his last two years of arbitration and extend him another two.

Nolan McClean might be another guy with top of the rotation potential. He's likely a year off if he stays a starter -- but Stearns could use him as a reliever right away and he'd be ready. He's already throwing 98 and you'd think he could touch triple digits if he's only going an inning. His stats since he stopped playing two-ways have been excellent in AA. Just a ton of physical potential from that guy. I could see him as a nasty closer.

Jonah Tong less physically talented, but another guy that could fit at the back end of a big league rotation in the next year and a half.

I agree, and on the major league level, I think Megill/Blackburn are actually very good 6th and 7th starters as well. I'm unsure if Megill as any options left, but we would be in a great spot if he's the ace of the Syracuse Mets in April.

I also think Butto is being underestimated as well. He was pitching really well in AAA as a starter. I wouldn't be angry at all if he was slotted in as our fifth starter next year. I don't want him to fall into a Seth Lugo trap, and like him, I don't think he can recover quickly enough in time to be a full-time one anyway. That would be exceptional value as well -- he doesn't even become arb eligible until 2027!

Butto/Senga are probably the best arguments to get a six man rotation going, but especially if we add more injury-prone "prove it" guys as well.

Because of his injuries, Megill does somehow have 2 options left according to Spotrac. Butto obviously has options as well and that's huge for flexibility if one of them has to be a swing starter. A ton of our younger relievers have options as well.

I think a six-man rotation is a no-brainer with Senga as your ace. Every team in the league will be using on in a decade.

I'm keeping this in this thread so I'm not accused of trolling. But if the top of the 5th inning is the beginning of the "lolYanks" era, I wouldn't be upset...

No matter who we cheer for that was some bad baseball right there. Judge’s blooper was just a good old fashioned error. That happens even to the best of them. But Cole pointing at Rizzo is finger pointing at its worst. That is a ST play they practice every day of his life. It is all on him to cover. Brand new game but it’s just tied. They still have a chance to cleanse the stink.

Heyman: "The early smart money has the Mets re-signing Jose Iglesias, aka Candelita, this time to a major league deal. Iglesias was a delight in the Mets clubhouse, as well as on the field, where he hit .337 (he’s the batting champion with enough plate appearances)."
