I am loving how this is basically a prove it deal if he wants to go out and get a better contract. Go hit 45 homers this year, Pete!
And he will. I 100% believe he's not in decline and the pressure got to him. 40+ and 110+. Hopefully Nimmo is healthy and can give him some protection.
I think the protection works the other way around. If Soto's on base, they can't pitch around Pete.
Protection can 100% go both ways. Soto gets on base better than anyone.

You’ve gotta pitch to somebody in the lineup (see our old pal George Foster during his time with the Big Red Machine).
You didn’t have to pitch around him last year. He hit .215 with runners on, .232 with RISP and .154 with bases loaded. I don’t buy the Soto being on base will help him. He got his RBIs in 2022 by hitting crushing the ball with runners on. It just depends which Pete we get. The first one and he is ours for 2 years the latter and he opts out.

They did this with John Curtiss a couple years ago and it didn’t work out. Maybe these guys will!? Heck, if Cohen allows the spend why not?
Agree. We can survive Montas getting hurt although starting pitching looks like the weakest part of the team at this point.

Anyone who expected Montas to stay healthy was kidding himself. Agree that Quintana is (and always was) a better option.

I think the Montas signing will be a disaster, and a black mark on an otherwise good track record by David Stearns.
