Mets Hot Stove talk--2024-25

I think Pete will have to opt out or take the option BEFORE free agency begins. I am not sure about that. Maybe somebody knows for sure?

I don’t see them making a run at Vlad. They already have long term commitments now to Lindor/Soto. Vlad at 26/27 is going to get 7-8 years and up. Seeing Stearns operate I don’t see it. Soto was a special case. All about building a brand. Vlad with his body type is a huge risk. Soto already will end up a DH.
The opt outs are always before free agency begins.

I am loving how this is basically a prove it deal if he wants to go out and get a better contract. Go hit 45 homers this year, Pete!
And he will. I 100% believe he's not in decline and the pressure got to him. 40+ and 110+. Hopefully Nimmo is healthy and can give him some protection.

Good deal for the Mets with Pete for 2 years. Soto will be at 1st in 3 years.

I think the protection works the other way around. If Soto's on base, they can't pitch around Pete.

You didn’t have to pitch around him last year. He hit .215 with runners on, .232 with RISP and .154 with bases loaded. I don’t buy the Soto being on base will help him. He got his RBIs in 2022 by hitting crushing the ball with runners on. It just depends which Pete we get. The first one and he is ours for 2 years the latter and he opts out.

Funny. People get all bent out of shape every year when the Mets cut the $1m check for Bobby Bonilla. Here we have the Mets paying $1m for a second guy (Drew Smith) who will NOT pitch in 2025. In fact, it’s $2m as the Mets are subject to the Cohen tax.

They also signed Adalberto Azolay to a similar deal. He also won’t pitch in 2025.

Seems like the deals Stearns likes. Low risk/some possible reward.

Montas out for 2 months with a lat strain. This is why you build depth like Stearns did.

Megill’s April career #s have been amazing so that should help mitigate the loss. Megill is 7-2 with a 2.84 in March/April for his career.

Agree. We can survive Montas getting hurt although starting pitching looks like the weakest part of the team at this point.

Didn’t like the Montas signing when Stearns did it. Montas has had multiple injuries. Not sure why he jumped so soon giving him $34m for 2 years. We won’t see this guy until June or even later.
