Cannot believe we are here, 6 BIG games to go, but in position to control our own destiny. A lot of scenarios to ponder, but the most important is right in front of us - the Braves.
Last year I heard Showalter say that you can't burn out your closers by using them earlier in every opportunity with the game on the line because you need them fresh and strong down the stretch.
Last night Mendoca called on Diaz for a six out save. In the 9th he was still topping 100mph. Unlesss the roof caved in it was going to be his game to lose.
So many stories in this great turnaround. Personally I'd point to Alvarez return from injury even if his numbers don't support it. Diaz return to excellence. The entire starting rotation has exceeded expectations and even with Senga out (but ready to give it a go) are proving formidable. The remake of the bullpen. Vientos breakout year. Lindor!!! Inglesias dusted off and playing like an all star. Acuna baptism by fire and not playing like a stop gap but like a veteran star.
For once, if the Mets somehow miss the playoffs, they will still have defied every low expectation to plsy compelling baseball for 2/3 of a season. It's Rocky getting off the mats 11 games under .500.
Met fans, like Johnny fans, have learned to savor every great moment as an oasis between years of disappointment. This year isn't 2000 where we somehow made it to the WS only to be slapped around by the Yankees. This is a wonderfully constructed team deep at all positions able to withstand the loss of McNeil, Lindor and their very best pitcher Senga.
All great fun and joy for Metsies fans. Let's get it done in Atlanta.
