Mets 2024 Season

Mendoza did unorthodox things tonight. I did like them as it happened. But I respect him for sticking his neck out there and doing something that wasn't the traditional approach.

A manager would've kept Megill in by default and wait for a guy to get on base. Giving Maton a clean inning was important.

I honestly thought he was going to give Diaz just the 8th inning. Schwarber/Turner/Harper scare me. I'd rather have our best pitcher against them than Butto or Garrett.

Ninth inning - potential bonehead disaster by Alvarez throwing to third on the steal, he has the field in front of him and Vientos was nowhere near the bag.
On the plus side, after Scott stole third, he and Diaz went hard and hard only, pitching around Marsh and blowing Clemens away. No passed balls or wild pitch potential with breaking stuff. Lost in the shuffle I believe was Mendoza going out to the mound and telling them to ignore whatever Marsh did from first.

Mendoza almost decided to pitch a "bullpen game" and thank God it worked. Would have liked to see 2 innings from Bhutto who was well rested.
Nimmo challenged the fans to come out and make noise and he backed up his words in the series. Diaz was his best tonight looking like the guy who pitched for us before the injury. Did not think he could do 2 nights in a row. No help from Polar bear in critical game tonight.

Nimmo came up big tonight. He’s had a strange season. You look down and he’s hitting .227 yet has 86 rbi. He’s also become a bit of a leader. I never would’ve expected that but he is.

Cannot believe we are here, 6 BIG games to go, but in position to control our own destiny. A lot of scenarios to ponder, but the most important is right in front of us - the Braves.

Last year I heard Showalter say that you can't burn out your closers by using them earlier in every opportunity with the game on the line because you need them fresh and strong down the stretch.

Last night Mendoca called on Diaz for a six out save. In the 9th he was still topping 100mph. Unlesss the roof caved in it was going to be his game to lose.

So many stories in this great turnaround. Personally I'd point to Alvarez return from injury even if his numbers don't support it. Diaz return to excellence. The entire starting rotation has exceeded expectations and even with Senga out (but ready to give it a go) are proving formidable. The remake of the bullpen. Vientos breakout year. Lindor!!! Inglesias dusted off and playing like an all star. Acuna baptism by fire and not playing like a stop gap but like a veteran star.

For once, if the Mets somehow miss the playoffs, they will still have defied every low expectation to plsy compelling baseball for 2/3 of a season. It's Rocky getting off the mats 11 games under .500.

Met fans, like Johnny fans, have learned to savor every great moment as an oasis between years of disappointment. This year isn't 2000 where we somehow made it to the WS only to be slapped around by the Yankees. This is a wonderfully constructed team deep at all positions able to withstand the loss of McNeil, Lindor and their very best pitcher Senga.

All great fun and joy for Metsies fans. Let's get it done in Atlanta.

This is all anyone could have asked for when the Mets punted to position themselves for a massive 2025.

They felt that they could field a playoff caliber team without taking on huge contracts and they delivered regardless of how the last 6 games play out.

Being fair, hard to complain about injuries with what the Braves have endured this year.
No reason for the Mets to not close this out. Terrible disappointment for me if they don’t. No solace in being the best team in baseball for 100 games, being in the playoff drivers seat and then losing out over the last 6 games. LGM!!!!

I'm not really complaining, more pointing out the resiliency of the team and how impressed I am with the team. I really thought we'd be a .500 team, perhaps a few games over. But the fact we've lost so much and are still competing at the highest levels in the most clutch moments is really fun to see. It's also exciting to finally see what a very smart FO can do with all of these resources.

I do agree. We need to make the playoffs now, and we need to exorcise our demons in Atlanta.
