Just a side note: that's a pretty poor graphic design, especially for people viewing on mobile.

Would've liked him to acknowledge that this season was a disappointment and some sort of a plan to improve things going forward (maybe a new assistant for example), but at least this is settled now.

Besides Champ we should have a lot returning and some solid recruits. Keeping players and getting a strong transfer or two should be the only focus now for everyone. Year 4 needs to be a Tournament year, and if it's not then revisit this a year from now.

Thanks for posting Paultzman and also thanks to Lawman for locking the inane rumor mill--time to come in off the ledge and get on with growth for next year-Go Redmen/Redstorm!  As a son of Dodger fans and as a Met Fan, the common thing is "Wait Until Next Year".

The most amazing thing about that was addressing us as “Johnnies Nation”.

At this point, I did not think we had enough fans to even fill a nation. To me it was always more like “Johnnies Avenue”.

Anyway, this is good news overall.

We are…

I am OK with this.. except for the shitty font :) I am getting old. Give me something easy to read.

Happy to hear it made official. Agree with Adam that it would have been nice to hear him speak to the fans frustration with this past season.

Hopefully Coach can retain the key guys, keep an upward trend in recruiting and we can show up next season with a staff and team hungry to prove themselves.

Happy to be wrong on this one, going to have a little chat with my source. CMA's a good guy and hard worker by all accounts, hope the path forward for him at SJU is a successful one.

Unless getting Pitino was even a remote possibility this is a good thing in the short term. He has a better chance of retaining our better players which is something to build around. Could make this sentiment not age well if Posh leaves or there's another mass or semi-mass exodus in the coming weeks. Long term this is TBD.

Anderson needs to attack this transfer portal as if his year 4 is the make or break year for him, which it should be. It shouldn't be one of those seasons where finishing 6th and making the NIT is the goal because we are projected to finish 9th in the preseason polls. Anderson was brought in to at least elevate us to where SHU and Providence have been which is consistently in the top half of the standings and in the tournament. Down years happen for everybody in this conference not named Villanova and those are acceptable if there are far more up years. Time to have an up year.

Starters/Backups next year:
PG - Posh/King
SG - Pinzon/Wusu
SF - Storr
PF - Wheeler/Stanley
 C - Soriano/Nywie

Thats a nice 9 man rotation.  Not listing Tarore as Id have to see what he brings to the table next year.

I’m as disappointed with this year as anybody.  But I’m relieved and satisfied with today’s news.  This program desperately needs stability and I think CMA deserves one more year.  By all accounts, he’s a classy and professional coach who up until this year (we underachieved miserably) has exceeded expectations (albeit moderately).

But make no mistake, next year has to be tournament or bust for Anderson.  Am I confident he will be able to take us to there?  No, but if it doesn’t work out, at least we will be able to part with him on our terms and hopefully Cragg will have an exit plan in place.

Given CMA’s status, I would think it would be difficult to recruit upper echelon high school kids for now (not like we were doing that anyway for the most part).  It’s absolutely critical for CMA to retain the core kids (Posh, Wusu, etc.) and play the transfer game well.  Should make for an exciting couple of months!

We better find some impact transfers bc I’m not sure the lineup you mentioned is an NIT team, no less an NCAA team.  I do think at least one or two kids will leave even under the best case scenario.  That’s just the way things are today.  Hopefully CMA had some insight that Posh and other core pieces are returning before he made his statement.  I would think he would have sat down with his players by now to get a sense of their intentions.  Of course with 19 year old kids, things can change quickly from one day to the next.

In my opinion, this is good news for the program.  We have a chance to retain and build upon a roster that won eight conference games last year and Mike Anderson is the individual best positioned to do so.  He has been here for just three years and overachieved twice.  Let's see what the offseason and next year brings.

We gave Jarvis 5 years, Norm 6 years, Lavin 5 years, and Mullin 4 years.  I understand this year's disappointment stemming from expectations versus performance.  However, getting rid of (or wishing away) a coach after just three years is not good for our short-term success or the attractability of the job.

I support CMA's return and see a plausible path to success next season.

Agree on everything with one clarification.  Jarvis took us to the ncaa three out of five years.  During his tenure, we made the elite eight, won a big east tournament championship and won an NIT.  Father Harrington wasn’t  being patient with him. He kept him around as long as he did bc Jarvis was winning.  Jarvis was ultimately canned bc he flirted with the nba, alienated coaches across the Tri-state area with his arrogance, and ultimately hit rock bottom the  year he was fired.

Jarvis was fired after only a few games his final year (before conference play started as I recall) so I’m sure there’s more to the story that insiders know.  My only point is that Jarvis was in a different position than Roberts, Lavin, Mullin and CMA.

Let's be clear I don't think he should have been fired.  But I would not have lost a ton of sleep if he did decide to leave voluntarily for another job.  Although I don't have a ton of confidence SJU would have gotten a better replacement.

But your timeline below is simply not relevant.  Norm inherited NCAA sanctions that included 2 years of probation.  Lavin made the NCAA's twice and NIT twice and was still fired after 5 years (which means CMA is actually being treated better).  Chris was pushed out after making the NCAA's in year 4.

Not sure what you mean by overachieving in year 1.  They went 5-13, I guess it could be worse but how much worse could they have realistically done?  To me to truly overachieve vs low expectations you need to finish .500 in league or better.  Finishing 8 games under /500 and still "overachieving" is really weak.

Be clear he is under enormous pressure these next 12 months because if you think it was bad just these last few weeks (which I agree some of it is not fair) wait until he goes 17-14 again.  He won't be able to survive that.

If Butler brings back Lavall Jordan you could have 4 BE coaches be really on the block next year (CMA, Jordan, Steele and Ewing).  Ewing has to make a major leap because obviously anything better than 0-19 is an improvement but much like "overachieving" he can't simply "improve" he has to jump into upper half of conference in 1 year.  I think all 4 at the minimum have to be NCAA teams next year.

I didn't post that this was awful news.

Like I said the other day, I am glad that CMA is back and I am not sure what the back up plan was and it likely could have been worse. I don't think it was necessary to apologize to the fans. Everyone knows we were disappointed and CMA knows this should have been an NCAA team. CMA's first two years showed progress and this year was a tremendous disappointment. I was happy to see the fight in the Villanova game. He has a lot of work to do in the offseason. Posh is by far the most important player to retain. Without him I don't see a shot at the NCAA's and we will be in a worse position next year. The more players we can retain the better but we will also need to add two transfers who at least one needs to be better then either Smith or Coburn and a replacement for Wheeler if he leaves. One or two very solid transfers, Storr and the improvement we saw at times from Wusu, Nwiye, Soriano and Wheeler if he stays can put us in the fight for a bid. Maybe next season the ball will bounce our way a little more. I also don't seee CMA as a lame duck at least the school should not portray him that way as he is signed through 25-26. We need to be able to recruit effectively this coming season or we will just regress again. As a St. John's fan you can never be too optimistic so everything I wrote can turn on a dime.

Without knowing all the contract and buy-out details, it seems the only known available candidate who would have been a no doubt upgrade is someone the school wouldn't have hired for reasons previously stated.

I'm happy Anderson is back and have supported him, the staff and the kids fully throughout his tenure, as I always will.

Now I want to see Anderson and the staff retain core kids they've developed and make an impact on the transfer front.  Take a page out of Ed Cooley's book from last offseason; he kept their core kids, brought in 2 transfers that are good and made perfect sense for the roster, and with some breaks had a season that absolutely no one predicted.  He took a disappointing year in which he was getting a ton of heat in Friar-town and turned it around immediately.  You can do that in college basketball these days because of the transfer rules.  I've never questioned this staff's work ethic, as we've done with others in the past, so I'm hopeful they know what needs to be done and will get us there.
