Memory Lane

OK since I moved stuff to this thread for housekeeping purposes, it also provides me with an opportunity to answer a question a guy on the train asked me last night:

Guys LMF hated: Omar Cook. Reggie Jessie. Zendon Hamilton. DeAngelo Harrison (first two years or so). Jakarr Sampson.

Guys LMF loved: Charles Minlend, Justin Simon, Sir Dom. Boo Harvey. Marcus Hatten. Ty Grant.

Guys LMF had sneaky affection for that probably didn't deserve it: Donald Emmanuel. Phil Greene. Eugene Lawrence. Dylan Wusu. Matt Brust.

Guys it was a privilege to watch play: Sealy, followed by Mullin and Artest, followed by The Truth.

Definitely forgetting some, just an off-the-top-of-my-head list. Curious who others have in those categories (or others)
Where is my name

Absolutely . But , LMF seemed to focus on players of Mullin era and forward , rather than the 70’s, 60’s and 50’s.

We had many greats over the last 75 years .
I read LMF to be giving his personal favorites as well as not so personal favorites along with those guys he liked even though they weren't necessarily very good players and finally all time greats having nothing to do with being his personal favorites. As such he only went back so far as guys he saw play.

Mullin made me a Johnnies fan…Boo Harvey cemented it. Malik Sealy my favorite though.
Question on Boo Harvey who I loved in that 1989-90 season...he was super clutch. I remember 4 last second shots that either won the game (Depaul, @Gtown, @Pitt) or tied it (@Seton Hall), but I also recall the one of the reasons he was not considered an NBA prospect was that he was too slow. Anyone else remember that?

Guys I have hated

Bashir Ahmed: didn't like his game or him as a person - don't know if I ever told the story about the time I spilled beer on him at Parson's. Complete accident as I tripped, but I tried to apologize to him and he wouldn't look me in the eyes or acknowledge me. To this day part of me doesn't blame him, I get beer spilling on you is annoying as hell, but if you've ever been to Parsons on a Tues night, place is completely packed wall to wall and it is hard to get around, always thought his reaction was lame as hell

Mustapha Heron: Comparative to his hype and ranking as a recruit, Mustapha was one of the more frustrating players I have watched here. And he absolutely sucked in our last NCAAT game, the play in against Arizona St. Like if it came out he had ASU moneyline, I would believe it in a second.

Isiah Moore: One of those guys who you could tell was a complete a-hole when watching him play. But he was decent so tried to ignore it. But then he went and got suspended for our (actual) must win game against Seton Hall in the BET. Then he left.

Guys I loved

D'Angelo Harrison: Probably my first basketball hero. I was in 7th grade when he first arrived, and despite a rocky first couple of years, he is my favorite johnnie ever. Though Zuby is starting to close in

Posh Alexander: I'll spare you all the explanation ;)

Justin Simon: Couldn't shoot and his form was not nice to look at, but those Mullin teams would have so many games where they came out inexplicably flat, but Justin in particular was always playing hard. Athletic too

2025 Kadary Richmond: Best johnnie I've ever seen (prisoner of the moment take maybe, who knows?)

Sneaky Affection Guys

Mallik Ellison, Nick Rutherford, Ron MVouika, Omar Stanley, Malik Boothe

You cant include everyone so I left off a few. I started paying attention to St. John's late 70's through early 80's and by the 82-83 season was all in.

Guys I loved - Kevin Williams, Chris Mullin, Walter Berry (all time favorite), Malik Sealy(all time favorite), Felipe Lopez all time favorite) Eric Barkley, Ron Artest (all time favorite), Dom Pointer, Shamorie Ponds, Zuby Ejiofor.

Just miss

Ron Rowan, Robert Werdann, Lavor Postell, Ty Grant,
Mark Jackson, D'Angelo, Willie Glass, Jayson Williams

Guys that I didn't love - Jeff Allen, Steve Shurina, Tarik Turner, Grady Reynolds, Vince Cole, Marcus Lovett, Bashir Ahmed, DeLarosa brothers I could go on.

Sneaky Affection Guys

Nick Rutherford, Felix Balamou, Amar, Daniss Jenkins ( I dont know if Marillac reads my posts),

Here's a name no one EVER brings up James Scott.

Paterson NJ, Eastside HS, McDonald's AA.

Two time JUCO player of the year, along with Larry Johnson only other player to be POY as a Freshman and Sophomore JUCO.

Gave us two good (not great) seasons in the mid 1990's, had a cup of coffee with the Heat, played overseas for 10 years.

Really smooth jumper with lots of elevation.

There were off-the-court questions iirc and strictly basketball-wise, I think he wasn’t considered a good enough shooter for the pros and he was not really a true 1 or a true 2. It may be my 12-year-old sense of memory but I thought he was fast as hell. The Seton Hall and Pitt games I still remember like they were a month ago somehow.

Side note: he was a great player and definitely a catalyst for our tournament run but always loved Werdann too. Consummate lunch pail guy. How could you not love Glover on those early ‘00 teams also?

You get 0 points for disliking Curbelo. Find me one poster who liked him.
Good calls on Fordham (not 96) and Cedric The Entertainer.
Ayo - I can't decide if he's related to Marillac or just has some serious dirt on Marillac that Marillac doesn't want ppl to find out about....
