I think people are manufacturing a problem where there really is none. Landing transfers like these are every bit as good as landing good 17' class players. Maybe even better. If we can't land 4 or 5 top 75 17' players, what's the difference with landing two top notch transfers, and still having a ship or two for 17' to use?

I think people are viewing it as s failure of some type, when I view it as just smart team building. I guarantee we will still have 2 scholarships for the 17' class anyway, and the perfect scenario is to not have to recruit more than 3 HS kids per class anyway.
I think it's smart team building when traditional recruiting breaks down for a particular class and let's be honest recruiting most definitely broke down for whatever reason for 2017.

But credit to the staff for adapting and providing a better alternative than reaching for 2017 recruits that might not help us right away.

And if we still have 1 schollie left next year that gives them an opportunity to go after high profile player and if another frees up after the season maybe there is a late unsigned recruit or a recruit for a player who's committed coach just got fired or 5th yr transfer or traditional transfer or juco or foreign player. While this might not be the ideal route I would like I think it's the 2nd best route ESPECIALLY if the staff proves adept at developing players

That's why as I mentioned before the player I'm most interested in seeing this year is owns. not expecting a star but if he improved a lot then that would give me a reason to be excited about transfers

Do we really know that 17' recruiting broke down? I'm not saying it's not possible, but if one or two of our top targets aren't looking great that happens all the time, even to top schools. We are stil getting a former 5-star kid and another 4 star. To me it seems every bit as good. I'm still thinking we will have 2 ships anyway. I'm not sold Darien Williams will be here after next season.

As far as getting excited about Owens to get excited about transfers, it doesn't really work that way. Every transfer is different, and I think the guys we brought in this week are probably better caliber than Owens. Just a guess.

Maybe that's what was behind the Matt / Slice issue. Matt making the transfers happen while Slice is not getting it done with the 2017 class.

I'm not worried at all about how the team is currently being built. But I'm slightly concerned that Slice might view his more traditional take on recruiting as fighting a losing battle or taking a back seat to Matt's style.

The transfer guy will always be play because of Matt, but we probably need wins -- big ones hopefully -- next season to get the Slice part of the equation up to speed.

If Lavin had hired Matt instead of Rico he'd still be here. Matt would have filled in all the gaps that Lavin created with his all-eggs-in-one-basket approach.

I don't know if it's a back seat, I just think the level of player Rohressen recruits is a tough fit at SJU, at least now.

Is Rohressen's reputation as one of the top recruiters around mainly based on his success at Ky.which is not exactly a back breaking job or did he have great success at Man. Pitt and wherever else he worked?

Most of his high major recruiting work was at Pitt, was at Ky. one season I believe.

Gotta win first. Hard to attract McdAAs to the last place team.

Frankly, I think a big part of the issue is the times we're in. These kids feel it's a rites of passage to get a scholarship offer from Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, and a few others. Although, I can understand that kinda elation from receiving an offer from those schools, it doesn't mean they have to all flock to 'em. Once, those schools offer, then we're at a disadvantage, based on the thought process of most of these recruits in this day and age.

We had a brief run where we brought in five (it would've been six, if Darius Miles had come aboard) 5-star kids (Lopez, Hamilton, Artest, Barkley, and Cook) within a six-year period. We weren't exactly clicking on all cylinders during the days, either (outside of good seasons when we brought in Barkley and Cook). Granted, we wasn't too far removed from some solid years, but we wasn't exactly anything to write home about when we brought in Lopez, Hamilton, and Artest, if you know what I mean. Every once in awhile, we may win a battle against a blue-blood school (ie, we got JaKarr Sampson when facing the likes of Kansas), but more times than not we're not gonna hold up against those schools, nowadays (local talent or not).

Maybe, we do have to win to get those types, but I'm still not convinced we'll be able to consistently land those type of players, even if we do win. We'll probably have to win on the level of those blue-blood schools, in order to gain that kinda leverage to land kids of the 5-star ilk.

Grab all the 4-star kids, as possible, and occasionally pluck a 5-star recruit or two.

Having top 25 teams and playing top 25 teams before crowds of 15,000 at MSG is SJU's best chance of signing top recruits.

Actually, the highest rated player Slice brought to Pitt was Chris Taft (#29, per RSCI).

Sam Young, Tyrell Biggs, Carl Krauser, Levance Fields and Keith Benjamin were anywhere between top 60-100 recruits. Solid pieces, of course, but not of the blue-chip variety. Slice found the "right" fits for Pitt, more so than consistently recruiting kids who'd be perceived as "can't miss prospects."

Dare I say, I think the yin/yang of Slice and Abdelmessih is actually a good thing, as long a they can be adults about all of it. This rebuild is quite an undertaking. Matt A is killing it right now, and I'm actually happy he takes pride in it and has an edge. Rohrrsen will land his recruits in time. Main thing is we raise our stature as a team and start winning games. Fans must put things into perspective. We are the last place team in this Big East. Our prospects for landing elite kids will improve drastically if we show that we are s real contender.

broken like nathalie's car last week when she got hit in the city. That I'm sure of and others can verify

Ok here is what I would say about this and Paultz and others feel free to correct me. Matt is most definitely landing kids. Good kids. I'm beyond happy Matt is with us. The ponds that Matt and Slice fish in ( no pun intended ) are quite different and different bait and tackle are needed for both. Matt is important because we need to grab a lot of fish from that pond just to put dinner on the table. Slice goes for bigger fish and sometime it takes longer periods of time sitting over that fishing hole to land them. At the same time while he is trying to land the big striped bass it might be annoying to said fisherman to hear that the other person is apparently jesus of nazareth feeding the program when you just came off a single digit win season

Well done. Fishing season is upon us

I think that is what most of us are hoping for, the majority 4 star recruit and stealing an occasional 5 star. Mullin would have to have all the stars aligned perfectly for us to recruit like a Kentucky or Duke.

+1 For clarity in explanation, strong analogy and just plain hysterical.

Yes Knight
And there are infinite combinations possible to build a winning St.Johns TEAM even w/o a single 5 star
3-4 star players
A foreign kid
JC
Transfer
And you know sooner or later we will have our occasional 5 star in board.
TEAM
thanks
