Marvin Clark

Is he an upgrade over C. Jones?

A Michigan state fan had this to say on holy land:

"From Michigan State, this I believe is going to be a great addition for St. Johns clark was a slightly small "forward " in height but he is built like a rock. Was always MSU's strongest player even as a freshman. 4 star out of high school can shoot it from 3. Best thing is he went through Izzos rebounding program and will bring a great rebounding presence with him. Super tough kid pysically and mentally. Great great add for St. Johns I'm sad to see him go."

If a fan from a perennial top 10 school is sad to see a player leave, I'd say he has some talent

Plus it does not matter if he is an upgrade over Jones. Jones, if he stayed, this would've been his last year for St. John's. Clark won't play until 2017-18.

If Livingston comes, he's who you should ask about being an upgrade over Jones. I think he is, so I hope it gets finalized.

Exactly

Mase, I think you wanted Jones to become what Clark already is at a younger age.

A combination of them sure! Think they will be pretty different in style though

When I first read about Clark I had my doubts because "17 scolis are few and precious. But the more I read about him , the more I like. Strong, good rebounder and shooter w an excellent attitude.

This young man worried more about taking care of his mother and siblings then himself. St.John's just got a hell of a kid, working his way back after a serious injury. Welcome to our family.

Love the fact that the kid is a high quality kid and comes from a top flight program. Sounds like he has a similar game to Kris Jenkins. But have similar question about why staff, as much as I trust them implicitly, would need to tie up 2 2017 scholis(including Simon) this early on kids who have showed promise, but haven't done it at this level. Again, trust the staff completely but was just throwing it out there.

Read someplace that there is a 40% turnover after sophomore year. Guess that is factored in here.

My guess is they were not optimistic about 17 prospects.

Makes sense Paultz, although seems early to make that determination. But we'll know the definitive answer in due time.

Optimistic or not, getting a 5-star kid from zona wi 3 years eligibility and a 4-star from Michigan state is a no brainer. It leaves us still with a ship or two left and fills our needs without having to swing and miss with 3-4 scholarships in that class.

Perhaps I should phrase it this way. They had several elite 17 kids in mind which did not look to be panning out. They, in my opinion, looked at transfer options for reasons you cited & went that direction. I have no problem with their thought process on this. Everything is a crap shoot anyway.

The thinking could be that one bird in the hand is better than two birds in a bush.

Especially if it's a Larry Bird.

I hear what you're saying, but at this point since they've already played college ball their stars while in high school mean very little.

Maybe the staff thought if they stood pat, we wouldn't be good enough to attract '17 kids yet. But if we're good enough quicker, '18 could be a good haul?

Plus, Iowa St. was all about reclamation projects. Maybe Matt A. might actually feel that Clark and Simon are worth more to us than whatever combo of high schoolers we may land?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying its a bad move, just wondering and wanted to hear everyone's takes on what they thought the reasoning is. Slow day at the shop for me lol

Precisely. It's spreading our scholarships and also hedging bets on recruits. These kids are as good or possibly better than many of the kids in 17" class. Plus we will still have at minimum 1 kid not 2 ships for 17' regardless. Best of both worlds.

We have no reason to question the staff's strategy in bringing in Clark and Simon. In year one SJU is getting a player three years out of high school with two years playing for an elite program and one year practicing with SJU (Clark) as compared to an18 year old high school grad.
In Simon SJU gets a player two years out of high school with one year's playing with an elite program and one year practicing with SJU.
This seems to be an easy choice for the 17-18 season and we can worry about 18-19 at a later date.

I think all would agree that except for a chosen few most recruiting is a crapshoot. Tons of examples both ways, can't misses who missed and unknowns who became greats. Having said that, Mullin and co. get Clark and it appears Simon with a year to coach them up as opposed to maybe, possibly getting '17 recruits. I love the fact that we are building a very deep team because that creates incredibly competitive practices which hopefully, and normally, translates into games.

One guy asked a question for discussion purposes. I see little questioning of the moves.
