@Marquette, Sat., Feb. 10, 6p, FS-1

5 more Big East wins and we will have officially won our most conference games since Steve Lavin's first season. It hasn't been pretty this year but if Pitino's first season has us performing better in BE than we did the last 13 years... thats progress to me that I will take

What I am worried about is whether or not we will be on an “upward trajectory” as we enter next season. I think keeping a core of Zuby, Dunlap, Wilcher and Luis is a good start with some decent recruits already signed. However sounds like Luis got one foot out the door so who really knows what the team will look like when the offseason dust settles

Not every state school is guaranteed to make the tournament or have the most talented roster.

I don't think changing the goal posts are fair. Do you think Rick would say it's a successful year if we make the NIT? I highly, highly doubt it.

Pitino and staff are responsible for the roster. I don't think they entered the fall semester thinking their roster is as limited as it actually is.

I agree with but I just don't think we can call the season a disappointment yet, that's how I read your post if that's not what you meant then my bad. If we don't make the Tourney then yes it def is.

Whether we or Rick likes it or not, every year is going to be 4-6 new guys. Last year was extraordinary, but it's not going to be that different in other years. I hope he's ready for that.
Last year was only extraordinary because Pitino inherited a fully formed roster yet chose to announce at his first press conference that most of those players just wouldn't cut it for him. That was his choice, his doing.

If we don’t make the dance it’s a failure. It’d be one thing to miss with all the freshmen and sophs Xavier has, but have a ton of 5th year seniors. Our youngsters have barely played.

We also apparently had, unbeknownst to anyone at the time, the greatest collection of talent ever recruited.

In Tang's first year, they went to the Elite 8
But how many first year head coaches make it to the Elite 8...? (i have no idea- but highly doubt it's many...)

It was truly impressive what Tang accomplished- carried by an incredible guard who got incredibly hot during their tourney run... but Tang should not be a barometer of 1st yr HCs... more of very very high ceiling

Tang's definitely an outlier. No doubt. But I do think with the transfer portal, you can get hired in mid-March and still put together a roster worthy of the dance. I don't think the same logic applies from 4-5 years ago of needing a 2-3 year rebuild to be competitive.

Dont you give a RP team a chance of still getting better?
Of course I do, just think this team has a low cieling. We are lacking certain things that can't be fixed. FWIW I'm friends with Bamafan and busting his chops. That's what my comment was about.

Let's put things in perspective- Rick had a very short-time to throw together a team with only 1 meaningful returning player (Joel). Somehow, he did it, but once again they are "his guys" to only a degree. He needed stop-gap grad players that could step in and play right away, most of these players have already "developed" and reached their peak. Its all "one last run" for most of the team except a few younger players. If we make the NCAA tournament, great. If we don't but win a game or 2 at Big East Tournament and make NIT, that's fine too. Its a process and once Rick "builds" a team his way we are going to see NCAA Tournaments and great, not good seasons. I think we even have a decent showing in the NIT that only helps Brady and Simeon.

With that being said- Marquette starters will prob be Jenkins, Dingle, Ledlum, Soriano and Luis/Brady.
I've defended Rick from the get go about his decision to revamp the entire roster, but let's not re-write history now in attempt to defend him. Rick decided that he needed to jettison almost the entire team from last season, which resulted in him having to throw together a team with only one meaningful player. It's not as though he was left with a bare cuppord, like Norm and Chris were.

I get why he did why he did what he did, but with the wisdom of hindsight, that decision doesn't look so great at the moment.
