LoVett

Every player gets "registered" into specific classes with the guidance of their advisor in the Fall. The point of the matter is that Mullin apparently is running a loose ship and someone on the staff should be following up to make sure players actually are attending classes. Unless this is a typical St. John's cover-up, whether they use the term enrolled, registered or whatever, he should not have maintained any scholarship benefits per NCAA guidelines if in fact he was no longer a student after that grace period which is meant for those who attended a class and chose to drop it while maintaining other classes. He would have crashed longer had Mullin not been apprised and made to look a tool of his game. After this took place he was denied access to the player's training facilities and the use of the trainers to "rehabilitate" which, to my knowledge, he was not doing to begin with. This expedited his departure. There are players on the team who knew exactly what he was doing so his deceptive influence could have been costly. Matt and the advisor should have been on top of this and they weren't. I'm sure some rural fans observing the program from their dens reading this forum on their IPad may have better information about the situation so I will wait for their 24 hour delayed opinions for confirmation.

Always respect your opinion and I'm always grateful for your posts and insights, @Class of 72, but I think you're making a lot of assumptions. You stated,

"The point of the matter is that Mullin apparently is running a loose ship and someone on the staff should be following up to make sure players actually are attending classes."

The staff cannot make anyone attend classes. They can advise, cajole, encourage, beg, plead, heck - fill in your favorite verb from the "ask" family - but they can't "make". From your post, it appears to me that you're jumping to the conclusion that they didn't even try. It could very well be that they advised Marcus every single day of the need to attend class, and further advised him every single day that if he did not, that as of a certain date, he would no longer be eligible to even sit on the bench. Since the staff undoubtedly knows the eligibility rules far better that most of us ever could, it's more likely than not that they had ongoing discussions close to daily with Marcus advising him on how he was jeopardizing his status and exactly when he would hit the point of no return.

You state further along:

"Matt and the advisor should have been on top of this and they weren't."

While again, you may be completely correct, it seems inconceivable to me that they (Coach Mullin, Matt, the AD, St. Jean, the academic advisors, everyone) weren't discussing Marcus's status virtually every day. Heck, WE were discussing his status every day, how would it be possible that that they weren't as well? Particularly when it was regarding a player with Marcus's potential?

I appreciate your response. I respectfully disagree with your use of the words "virtually every day". A handful would be generous but classes started January 17th. The widrawal date was February 6th. It is February 17th. Spring Break begins next week. Finally, I don't think Matt's main concern was Marcus attending class. The issue became how do you deal with a squatting student supposedly on an "athletic scholarship".

Glad this is done. Nothing personal just time he left if he wasn't attending St. John's. I think the players felt some type of way towards him too because at the end of the Duke game he was jumping around trying to celebrate with the team and they really didn't pay him any mind.

It’s too bad for Marcus that he wasn’t part of the Team, after he , a 23 year old man, and his Father decided his injury was too severe to risk continuing to play . As a result , Marcus can only fantasize about what kind of St John’s team resurgence would be , if he was able to continue . Just think , he might be sharing some of the accolades that have come for Shamorie and the rest of the Team since the Duke game . And, he might have improved his remote chances of ever playing in the NBA , if he was part of that resurgence . His stock would have risen far more , if he was able to play , rather than sit in the Stands and try and horn in on the Duke Victory . Ponds, without Marcus has soared to a level that is truly amazing . Ponds , at least might have the NBA as a possibility , LoVett doesn’t . I hope he is getting good Medical Trestment but, wonder by who ? Or, is he ? Interesting question .

Some have suggested that Marcus’ father did not want his son to play if he was not the spotlight player.

Can’t imagine his father had any illusions going into this year that, at best, Marcus would be sharing top billing with Ponds. Yet he chose to return.

He got the best medical advice in NYC when he got injured. He got the worst mental advice when he visited his dad in Caiifornia during Christmas. He was cleared TWICE to practice and continued to complain about pain. After his dad announced that he and his son were not going to participate in any basketball related activities it put the university in an awkward situation. They had to get the medical staff to sideline LoVett so they could continue his athletic scholarship. Then came the monitoring part and the Lovett’s tried to milk the system by living in university housing, eating on university money all while never having the intention of attending any classes. While it is the school's right to allow people to use its facilities it became a scholarship eligibility issue. He put both the staff and his teammates in a compromising situation. He was no longer a student. I frankly don't care about his basketball future because he obviously didn't care much for his teammates to play them in this manner. A good teammate turned into a bad influence and this drama may have an impact on Shamorie Ponds imo.

Well, he sure isn't a spotlight player now.

From everything I have read about Ponds ,he handles himself very well when interviewed and has a genuine affection for Mullin , the University and his teammates . I do think He was quite willing to pair with Lovett again this year and share the experience of the Redmen doing well as a team and going to the NCAA’s . Too bad , Lovett didn’t seemingly want to be part of that and his last minute defection from the team in January did contribute to the losing streak and ended the possibility of a very good season . I think we all do question as well the seriousness of Lovett’s injury , especially since no one knows the extent of any , if at all, treatment he may be getting . Which doesn’t put him in a very good light with our fan base . Adios !

As for the extent of his injury, a complete MCL tear only takes a few (2-3) months to recover from which shouldn't have ended his season. With that said, the school already said he had an MRI which rules this out and it was only a sprain of the MCL (2-8 week injury). This clearly has very little to do with the actual injury and more to do with him doing what he (and his father) think is best for them long term.

Of course , Lovett and his Father , could have done what’s best for him , last Spring, Last Summer or any time before starting to play . And, seemingly , could have returned , probably , in time for the start of the BE Season against Providence . . But, not to be . If I recall , wasn’t Lovett originally a Lavin recruit before Mullin even took the job ? Just saying .

Sorry, I don’t understand your last point. What is the relevance of LoVett being a Lackn recruit? Are you implying this is all Lavi ‘s fault?

I believe LoVett was recruited by Lavin, but committed after Mullin took over.

No not at all attributing Lovett ‘s leaving as being part of Lavin’s tenure . I think Mullin had to , essentially , reseal the Lovett commitment , after Lavin left . Of course , I guess no one knew Lovett was only going to be a partial qualifier and would have to sit a year . I , for one , have grown tiresome of the Lovett situation and will put it to bed .

Remember the good old days when there was no "I" in team?

Me thinks Lovett, at the provocation of his Dad, jumped off what he thought was sinking ship. Boy were they wrong. Me also thinks that Ponds doesn't blossom in to a Wooden award candidate if Lovett is still here. Don't let the door hit you on the way out kid.

I heard Lovett decided to leave when Louie wouldn't hand over his mama's special gravy (sauce for the uninitiated) recipe.:)

I definitely don't think we have four straight wins if Lovett plays.
