LoVett
How did they not know he was enrolled on classes last month?

If they knew, why did they allow him to have housing, food, training, and sit on bench at Duke game during last month?
I was just thinking the same thing. The Duke game was after the second semester started. If he had not enrolled, how was he allowed to have housing on campus?

Yeah, I just hope the NCAA doesn’t intervene and nullify our win over Duke because we had a “non-compliance” individual on our bench?!!!?
Joking—I hope!

One way to minimize these dramas would be to stop recruiting players who have attended more than two high schools, have felony arrests, or have sexual identification issues.

Marcus will never play one minute in the NBA. Whomever is giving him guidance needs to have their head checked. What better platform do you want to get into the league? Why would he want to burn the bridge with Mullin. I’m sure at end of day if Mullin made a call and put in a good word some nba team would give him a try out. Anyways good riddance. These types of things are infectious in the locker room.

You're right. Unfortunately in order to speed up the rebuild, it was necessary to take chances of kids like Lovett and Zach Brown.

That’s a interesting point about his dorm situation. I don’t know about athletes, but to get a key to your dorm you have to show proof of a meal plan and a 12 credit schedule. There’s no exceptions to this because you can’t even get a mail box without verification.

He couldn’t have used a old meal plan verification, because they don’t rollover to the next semester.

Interesting!

I have absolutely no idea about Marcus' situation. I know that he hurt his knee, but not how bad. I have not spoken to him, his father, the coaches, or Ron Linfonte. Because of this, I will not judge the young man. I appreciate his coming to St. John's when we had nothing. He played well while he was here, averaging over 15pts and 3 assists a game.

At this point, all I can do is wish him the best in all of his future endeavors.

He wasn't actually on the bench during any of the 2nd semester games. He sat in reserved seats. Originally it was rumored that he registered but then the less than sharp pencils overseeing the student athletes were made aware he was not attending any classes. I think he was playing the grace period game and getting over which he seemingly is expert in since high school.

Note: a friend who has a daughter at SJ told me kids registered for the Spring 2018 semester back in November. I am assuming SJ registered him, which was before his injury. He just seemed to not have any intention of attending classes which was very deceitful on his part.

Panther2, I enjoy your posts and totally understand that (i) Marcus came to SJU at a low point for the school and played extremely well for us in the 1 plus year he played and (ii) only he can judge the extent of his injury and his comfort level with playing. He was one of my favorite Johnnies prior to the injury. The problem I have is not his decision to shut down this year but the way he and his dad implemented that decision as reported by the Post and confirmed by others on his site. Clearly, the staff deserved to be brought into the loop before it was announced via social media. I have yet to see anyone dispute that account. Hard to justify, if true.

Fact that he has continued to maintain that he had not made a decision re:coming back next year (know we al knew he wasn’t) yet hadn’t enrolled in class doesn’t sit well. He knew he wasn’t coming back. Good riddance.

It's possible that Marcus was crashing in Jack's dorm room. For reference, please see the movie "Call me by your name".:p

Lovett is a perfect example of why the NBA rule of herding kids into college when some have zero interest in school doesn't work. Injured or not, thete was nothing other than lack of interest keeping him from pursuing an education.

FWIW, I’ve heard that all the players live in an off campus house.. maybe that explains some of the stuff you’ve been wondering about Lovett.

It is interesting though that he was on the bench for the duke game. The second semester started a couple weeks before, so if he really wasn’t enrolled it’s interesting they let him on the bench. Maybe he was behind the bench and just ran into the court when the game was over?

1) Most of the players except for freshman live off campus

2) He wasn’t on the bench for the Duke game, he was behind the bench in the stands

3) Students can enroll in classes and drop them usually about 2 weeks into a semester without it taking a hit on your GPA. This means the decision was officially made about two weeks ago
