Longwood Game

.With the many Penn State alums in NYC I see them having the home court advantage, come out more motivated, hit their 3s, and we lose another game to a BIG opponent.
.
just curious..will you be at the game cheering SJU on or in your easy chair penning critical posts?

I was at the game tonite next to Lavin and the SJU bench and all I can here him say constantly is screen, screen, screen. This is basic stuff that never seems to penetrate the heads of these players. I don't think Jakarr knows how to set a screen. I was trying to determine anything we do well as a team. We do not rebound, we do not play good defense, we cannot shoot the ball, and our FT percentage is not acceptable. I am trying to find a glimmer of hope somewhere! Somebody help me out!

Longwood was a wounded duck, without their best player and apparently 2 others out with injuries. Also coming off of games Friday and Sunday. The fact that they hung around as long as they did speaks volumes about where SJU is right now. Which is not ready for prime time. Only our completely overwhelming athletic edge won these games. We won't have that much longer, as we have to play real teams soon. There is nothing good that can be taken out of the early season games. Nothing.
Don't worry! Team will be sky high for back to back games this weekend!

Screen and then do what?

I don't buy the whole doesn't penetrate the heads of the players stuff.

The games should just be an extension of practice.

I refuse to believe the team looks good in practice and then comes out and stinks it up.

If it's bad during the games, it leads me to believe that they look bad during practice.

Im making comparisons with common opponents Penn State is 3 and 1 we are 4 and 0. Let's not make Penn State out to be something they are not.

Penn State beat Monmouth by 32 points tonight
We struggled to beat them by 10
This should an interesting weekend
We'll see how our kids stack up against better competition
It hopes it brings out the best in our team

Wow I hate to admit this but I'm scared... We are not making any progress!!! Talent can only get this program so far

This team, unfortunately, isn't talented.

You see, that is the difference between you and me.......I do not blame the kids, I blame the coaching.
For those saying our players play with a low basketball IQ-remember the saying that a team adopts the personality of their coach. Just saying. I too believe we have enough talent to win this season.

Well, the easy part of the schedule is over.  We have been very consistent over the course of 7 games (yes I count exhibitions) and that is we hit the court totally unprepared for our opponent.
Tonight, against the lowest ranked team on the schedule we hardly looked focused on defense and, as usual, disorganized on offense.

Now I know some here will fall back on the low IQ mantra when looking at our players and a couple will obviously not be Rhodes Scholar candidates but it begs the question: when you are the worst shooting 3 point team in the universe, why is coach allowing Harrison 11 attempts while also missing most every type of shot he took for most of 30 minutes?  Is it part of his recovery and redemption process to be a one man offense. Three starters - Phil, Primo and Sampson shot a combined 3 - 19 while Harrison alone took 19 shots. Of course, after 35 minutes of forced shots and 28 footers he hit a couple of 3s but it all looks so helter skelter.
Again, was the plan to have Sanchez only take 3 shots from 20 feet? Yes, Lavin finally sat mi non comprende but his absence was mostly on the court where he seems to have no position assigned since, according to Lavin, he can play 4 positions.  Unfortunately, he plays them all without much passion.
Again, our formidable front line was rendered useless by whatever offense Lavin Wood was running against a small and less talented team.
In making comparisons with common opponents it appears Monmouth, who played us even for 37 minutes lost to our next opponent by 32 points.
With the many Penn State alums in NYC I see them having the home court advantage, come out more motivated, hit their 3s, and we lose another game to a BIG opponent.
Why? Because we will take too many 3s, Harrison will think he is the offense and Primo will no comprende his role on the team.  Finally, Phil Greene will continue to have the ball in his hands on offense and we will use 30 seconds to get the ball to a shooter......those shooters being only Harrison, Greene and Sampson while the rest of the team is disenfranchised.

and if we beat Penn State will we still have to read your bitchin? Me thinks you'll find something to complain about. Doesn't it ever get old being a grumpy old man? Maybe take a break from watching them for a little bit. Can't be good for your blood pressure 72.

Thank you for your concern about my health! As for your question, no, I actually enjoy being grumpy.
As for input into the game, or any game, for that matter, your analysis is as thorough as usual. I would imagine at your precarious hormonal age you are more involved beating your member to the point of it becoming a raw dog. How appropriate that given only a raw dog head such as you sees others commentary as "bitchin" while I have yet to read one intelligent comment from your sticky fingers. Do me a favor, do not read my bitching and focus on your raw dog while watching Internet porn in your locked room.

Well, you won't get any help from Shecky, RawDog and a few others that will only see your comments as being "critical".
I am not sure if these clowns even attend the games but I call it as I see it and if these fans like what they see, our expectations based upon the advertised product in Times Sauare are worlds apart.
To answer to your question, it all starts in practice and it is obvious our kids do not get in practice or they would come out ready for games. They have been outplayed in every first 20 minutes thus far.

What type of input would you like Ebenezer? They haven't looked as good as I hoped they would at this point but at least we are 4-1. Their half court offense is stale . They shoot too many threes. They should press more. I'm not breaking any new ground here. It's things others have already said so I choose typically not to regurgitate what others say because it's pointless. You're what I expect Joe to be like when he is 65. Pathetic. Happy Thanksgiving jefe.

I'll take ugly wins over pretty losses every time. At the end of the day, we are 4-1 with our only loss being on a neutral court against a team that is currently ranked number 10 in the country. All that matters is wins, and beating teams that you are supposed to be beat, and we have done that.

Penn State lost to Bucknell.. We beat Bucknell. Or does that only work the other way around?

Senseless dribble , seriously.

Who do you guys think is our best penetrator? (less the longwood jokes in reference to the penetration) Branch shows flashes but it's not consistent.

I've seen Branch or Sheed both show the good ability. But neither have shown enough yet.
Agreed. Having Greene and Harrison out there at the same time it just seems like we settle for the jump shot most of the time.
If we attempt to ride those two night in/night out, we will get beat bad by good teams...too many low percentage shots...would love to see our shot distribution chart...very few layups that aren't off transition

Penn State averaged 82.75 points and allowed 67.75. whereras
St.John's averaged 67.25 points and allowed 55.25 my read Wagner,Bucknell and Longwood all scored more points against Penn State which should be determinive allowing SJU to win by about 7 points.

I promised Paul last year I would not initiate any insulting personal attacks Chico and I am keeping that promise. As to your latest response El Jefe says El burro sabe mas que Tu!

BTW, it is pretty hypocritical of you and your pompous attitude to have said "Their half court offense is stale . They shoot too many threes. They should press more." thereby admitting you are just as critical but prefer to call others out for actually having the cojones to spell it out. And you are right about one thing....nothing you have ever posted here has broken new ground. LMAO!

Since you asked, no I will be out of town over the holiday so I will leave the cheering to you and will expect your usual deep thoughts about the game.
Unlike some phony homers here, I always cheer for my team. I love re-reading some of the play by play comments here after games.....notice I have never made comments during games since I am too busy cheering my team in person usually. When I check my IPhone at halftime it is usually to check other scores.
I find it funny how some find it so easy to be critical of our kids play the second it happens and feel compelled to post it but get their undies wet when some of us mention it in game summaries. Rolling my eyes!

I appreciate your optimism. Wish I felt the same. The statistics through 5 games, including 4 at home, are pretty close to appalling considering the competition. 43% from the field, and 22% from 3. Under 70% from the line. Only a 2 rebound per game rebounding margin, despite a huge athletic advantage every game. We won't enjoy that kind of an edge against any remaining opponent. You can't expect these stats to get better as the comp improves, unless there is a mystery player hiding in the locker room. Every coach sees how we struggle with the zone. How we struggle from 3. We need to hit the same open jumpers that the good teams hit, or else we will be zoned into oblivion. Dom plays the perimeter. You can cheat off of him. Sanchez is out in 3 point land. Teams all but beg him to shoot. And he obliges. CLANK. The myth of Hooper is turning into a sad, but not unexpected reality. It's not over for him yet, but time is running out. Maybe there is hope.

Exactly. No bad losses. And this is why big conference teams play bunnies out of conference. Vermont came so very close to beating Duke AT Duke, they lost by only one there and they are close to impossible to beat at home out of conference..and Vermont also lost to Wagner by 6 who we beat by 16. And PC blew out Vermont and we destroyed PC at PC last year with the same team and PC has won 30 in a row out of conference at home. Doesn't matter. Teams are still learning to play together. Jordan is a freshman who missed games due to whatever... There is too much negativity on this board. Wait to conference play to complain.

Completely different sports and mindsets but in Europe if a soccer team does not win pretty the manager usually gets sacked. I've even seen on a few occasions teams win their league and the manager will still get fired because the style is not attractive.

In our case you can't even say Lavin is leading a team which plays ugly. I wish we had that sort of identity because at the end of the day we can hang our hats on being a tough hardworking team. This squad is bereft of a leader and an identity. That's why you see guys continuing to try to do things on the court and failing. The only one who fits my mold of a player I want is Dom Pointer. He has his off nights but he comes to play every night like its his last game. If I had to reach and pick another it'd be Jakarr but I see his body language wane when he struggles and often times that affects his play.

Lets get to the point where we can outwork teams and play smart even if it is an "ugly" win. We aren't even at that stage yet in this the 3rd year with Lavin's recruits! Everyone here wants to blow teams out. I say temper those expectations and hope these guys learn to play within themselves and allow the chips to fall where they may.
