Lobster rolls etc

gotta go to Maine for the best lobster roll. Sorta like Pizza in NY. Any little, local place will beat the pants off of anything elsewhere.

Is that really true? Are the water temps so much colder in Maine or is the environment different as those the LI baymen catch? Are the diets different? I think the key factor is FRESH lobster, not frozen and not refrigerated. That would just about rule out anything in NYC, but not completely since they can be in tanks. I do think lobsters in tanks are stressed and that can affect taste.

It's definitely true. I lived in Maine for several years (in the summer McDonalds will even do a Lobster Roll - but I never fell for it) and have also gotten fresh lobster right from the pots North Shore. Water temp or whatever I could not say just that the proof is in the lobster.

And on City Island I think it is called "Sammy's Fish Box" no? Had one of my first dates with my wife there and always make a point to stop at City Island when I get the chance but usually go all the way to the end for the extra large fried shrimp.

yeah sammys fish box not house. I gave that one a 9.25 claw rating

The one at city island lobster company was one of the worst I have ever had

There's a place out on the North Fork, can't remember the name .. that has fantastic lobster rolls. It might be called the Lobster Roll, or something along those lines.

Lobster roll Northside ? They have their original place right before montauk on the south side of montauk highway which I like better. that's where a lot of scenes from the tv show " the affair " are

If you head out to the north fork wineries go to the north fork table and inn food truck in the back behind the restaurant. It's probably about 1 or 2 miles past osprey dominion vineyard on the north side of the road.

Their lobster roll is probably my favorite on long island. Get them to go and there is a small beach-park several blocks away on the south side of the road. That's a 9.5 claw rating in my book.

Also different style type but in hampton bays the canal cafe has a great one on ciabatta bread plus you can sit on the deck on the water which adds to the clawbiance

Sometimes the ratings can get swayed by the drinking " claw goggling " but I've had those sober and they are excellent but claw goggling has been known to add an extra .50 to 1 claw on the rating

MJ have you ever tried Luke's lobster roll? Not the best, but good. 7+ claws in my book.
I think there's 2 or 3 of them, but I used to live on 81st Street on the UES and had one on my block.
The trucks used to deliver the lobsters every morning, so I know they're at least fresh.

yeah I love luke's. The one down by wall street. We get them to go and eat them down at the seaport

BTW another solid one and don't laugh but Panera bread has a real good one and it's 16.99. Huge chunks of lobster. Personally I don't need the lettuce they put on the bread but if you don't like that just take it off but it's a real good one. Around a 7.75 claw rating. the pic here is panera

Still hunting for that Elusive 10 claw roll

We went there and didn't think it was all that good.

The North Fork Lobster roll is a sister restaurant to the Lobster Roll in Amagansett, which is more commonly known by it's sign "Lunch". The North Fork location, on Sound Avenue has none of the charm of Lunch, and you are right, the food isn't that good at the North Fork location.

North Fork table is the highest rated restaurant on the north shore. Haven't eaten there yet. Then there is Noah's in Greenport, also highly rated. After that, Blue Canoe in Greenport which is owned by Vine Street on Shelter Island. There are other good restaurants on SI as well.

I'll take your word. You should write a blog on it at EatAt.

Not a big lobster roll guy, but I'm told the Dock House in Sag Harbor has good ones. I like the other food there, and clawbiance seems decent, though eating at the parklet across the street offers a better water view.

Speaking of green port if you are looking for lobster roll don't get sucked in at the lobster trap claudios. Theirs sucks. I like the place though for outdoor hanging out and eating stuff other than lobster rolls

Thanks Beast. The original is in Amagansett? and it has a better atmosphere? (and supposedly better food?)

yeah it's a real good place. inside feels kind of like a throwback in time. we like sitting outside though on the side area and in the fall they carry a real good pumpkin ale

It's literally right before you get into montauk. Across the street is the clam bar and a little bit further across the street is cyrils but someone told me cyrils lost their liquor license which is ashamed because they used to have a sick happy hour

If you haven't been out there it's worth a day trip or overnight trip and one of my favorite wineries is not far from lobster roll. Wolffer Estate Vineyards. The roadside stand is great for tastings and has an backyard facing the vineyard or you go up the road to the main tasting room

On top of mjmaherjr's comments, I'd like to add that it gets pretty crowded there, so plan accordingly Desco.

Being exiled to South Carolina I miss a lot of my favorites in NY. Believe it or not we have a touch of Maine herehttp://www.jllron30a.com/. Excellent rolls made with fresh main lobster. I do miss Maine though and if you go to the festival it is worth the drive up rt 1 to Bar Harbor You can stop at any road side shack and get heavenly steamed lobster with gobs of butter and steamers. . You will also go through Camden Maine which is one of the nicest towns in America. It has mountains to the west and rocky coasts to the east with Victorian houses with rolling lawns to the beach. The lobster is just a bonus :)

Great call Silvanator. We love roadside shack type places. We will definitely take your recommendations driving up there if we end up going.
